Full year group off

So I work in a secondary school. Today we have had all of year 9 off isolating and will be the same next week. Also only had 40 year 10 students in due to the rest isolating.

Is it looking bad again for schools, what is it like in your area/schools?
I'm from South Yorkshire, also heard of a few other local schools having year groups off!

North West.
Just had 70% of one year group after a cluster of cases. 8 kids and 2 staff members. Local Primary has all year groups bar one out.

We do see things escalate in schools and for me it shows the start of another problem. High level of positives in my secondary school, not whole year groups isolating but high percentages of certain tear groups and in Y10 too affecting end of year mock exams.
Significant numbers of staff isolating due to contact with positive cases - welcome back teams teaching to classesin school.
I am currently isolating - first time (double vaccinated and cross about having to isolate but so be it.....) my early 20s daughter positive. In her circle, wide - university and home life - lots of similar aged positives. Not detected early either as the new variant symptons different to standard cough/temp/loss of taste, smell. Hayfever symptoms at first common and headaches too.
I feel it kicking off again and not sure how 19th July can go ahead unless they are willing to go for it during the Summer holidays and therefore schools not affected so no widescale parental complaints.

Like @MaybeCrazy2, DCs' primary school had their first case ever last week. Shut two bubbles (only one-form entry) due to siblings, another bubble closed for two days as a precaution but reopened following negative test. Four cases in total in one of the bubbles, don't know about the other.

DC1's secondary also had only their second ever case last week - not her bubble, thankfully.

So it's made us take note. No one has actually been particularly ill, though, and 2/4 cases were asymptomatic and only picked up through precautionary testing.

There really has to be a better way.

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 25/06/2021 21:28

One whole school closed, one with a year out after multiple cases in that year, a few with parts of multiple year groups out. I think there was one with two year groups out. A lot of bus routes isolating, rather than whole year groups too.

NoVaccinePassportsAnywhere · 25/06/2021 21:45

A whole year group off here 🙁

Baileysforchristmas · 25/06/2021 21:46

@NoVaccinePassportsAnywhere where are you? x

Treehaus · 25/06/2021 21:50

It's bananas that whole bubbles are having to isolate still, ridiculous.

DancesWithDaffodils · 25/06/2021 21:54

Horrific at work. 10% of one year group have tested positive - whole year group at home. Big splash in the local paper.
Sibling links just dripping in now, along with several staff.

Just a few miles down the road, kids schools (one primary, one secondary) are very quiet on that front. Dont believe there are any at primary, but think secondary are sending several batches of close contacts home, but managing to keep it quiet.

RhinestoneCowgirl · 25/06/2021 21:59

Bristol here, two DC in secondary. DS in year 10 still in school, mocks start next week, several friends of his are isolating. He's stressed.

DD is in year 7, she's home learning for early part of next week as they have too many teachers isolating to cover lessons in school.

QueSeraSarah · 25/06/2021 22:00

SE - all of yr10 out and 75%of Yr 7.

BarbarianMum · 25/06/2021 22:05

@Treehaus surely that depends on how many in a particular year group are testing positive. When its verging into dozens it would seem sensible to me.

Lupinhere37 · 25/06/2021 22:10

SE Wales here too; no cases since before Christmas. Late 2020 was brutal though. So many were ill that we lost count. It went on for weeks.

Timeturnerplease · 25/06/2021 22:18

Tell that to PHE - they make these decisions, on the whole.

Figgygal · 25/06/2021 22:20

South Gloucestershire is riddled at the moment - one local school was completely closed all last week

CoodleMoodle · 25/06/2021 22:58

Primary here. DD's Y2 class got a letter today because someone had a positive LFT. They've since done a PCR and if that comes back negative they can go back in on Monday. Otherwise it's isolation until the 4th, so keeping fingers crossed. We got a letter yesterday to say another class are out too, but don't know which one.

DS's preschool currently still open, thank fuck.

thesevenhillsofhome · 25/06/2021 23:15

I'm in South Yorkshire OP.
Lots of schools, mainly secondary, all in very close proximity to each other in our part of the city.
Low cases. Which is surprising, as a lot of the secondary pupils travel across the city

Our year 10 have just had a full week of formal assessments under exam conditions. I hope yours haven't been disrupted?

Yes the school that shut was a worry least they took swift action.

Unlike wa which is bigger and feel sure its cause of outbreak at our feeder primary.

Frazzled2207 · 26/06/2021 10:46

we're in a covid hot spot (north west) and incredibly no issues with children since November. A few isolating staff which has given the HT a headache.
It is quite a small primary school that helps (one form entry), plus possibly the fact that a lot of parents are healthcare workers so would have been vaccinated ages ago.
That said we are now all expecting for the children to be sent home at any moment, there's only so much luck can do.

WaverleyPirate · 26/06/2021 10:53

But Gavin and Co said it didn't spread in schools. The stats were compiled over the summer holidays and of course said it wasn't an issue.

As a result no counter measures like extra ventilation were put in place. Teachers on this site pointing out the issues were shouted down.

As usual.

HelloMissus · 26/06/2021 10:54

Been very lucky here.
Haven’t had any bubbles burst the entire time. Praying we can avoid any issues before end of term.

donaldbump · 26/06/2021 10:56

2 cases. Two times had to isolate kids. Same in the other schools here. South east. It’s awful. I wish the media would report on this. Does the government have a plan?! Do we carry on until everyone over 18 vaccinated then just crack on? Or is it going to be like this next year. What about vulnerable kids? I’m worried.

MrsHamlet · 26/06/2021 13:09

One and a half year groups out. We've been surge testing this week so we're anticipating more.

FlagsFiend · 26/06/2021 13:24

We've had a couple of cases this week after no cases for ages, only close contacts isolating (about 30 students). Hoping it doesn't ramp up. The week before Christmas was mad, it was completely pointless having the school open (most classes had less than 4 students in due to cases, isolations and then students being pulled out by worried parents).

Chicoryhickory · 26/06/2021 13:37

North Devon - several local schools have cases and we haven't really been affected at all until now. My dc school haven't had any cases at all the whole way through.
