Test and Trace

Does anyone have any knowledge or experience of Test and Trace? From what I understand, there are two different systems - the app which is just based on proximity of mobile phones, is less reliable and you are not legally required to self-isolate if you receive a notification and the Test and Trace system where staff speak to a person who has had a positive PCR test, asks them questions about their contact with others and then anyone deemed as a close contact is legally required to self-isolate. Is that right?

For the latter, how wide-reaching are they in who they require to isolate? ie do they err on the side of isolating everyone who might have been within a metre of them at some point or just people they are confirmed as having had prolonged close contact with? If I go to a restaurant could I end up being ordered to self-isolate due to someone who was sitting at a different table testing positive or would it only be if someone in my group tested positive? Or could they take a more nuanced approach eg considering who was facing whom and whether we were inside or outside?

When I check into places with a QR code is that as part of the self-notification system only or both? I recently went into a takeaway where I was the only customer and the member of staff was serving from behind a screen. I checked in as instructed but does that mean that if someone comes in 10 minutes later who then tested positive, I'll be flagged up as a contact?

the app works on proximity of the phones and for how long, the phones swap keys and it's the keys matching after a positive code is put in that triggers an notification.
The qr codes are to track outbreaks coming from the same place.

Test and trace you have to be named. My experience of test and trace is on the phone they adk how far apart you were, if masks were worn and if you were outside. I spoke to them about dd1, she had been in self isolation for close contact any way so it was only the household who were asked to self isolate. But they went back a week, and went in to everything, who she had seen, which buses did she get, what time, how many people were on the bus, which shops did she go in to, everything. I also know people where test and trace have just sent a form rather than ringing.

I had a taxi driver that tested positive, track and trace didn't ask me to isolate because it was less than quarter of an hour and we both had masks on. The company did ring me though and let me know and said the advice was that I got a test if I felt even a little bit off.

And the venue QR check in is separate. It doesn't know who was in close contact, but might result in an alert so you know to be extra careful, or perhaps to take a test.

"The venue check-in feature works independently of the contact tracing feature. If you get a venue alert it will not tell you to self-isolate."

Regarding the QR venue check in, I’ve just received a text with an NHS Test and Trace venue alert. Says I have been somewhere where someone else has since tested positive, it recommends booking a test (PCR if any symptoms or LF if asymptomatic) and reminds to follow the guidance.
I hadn’t heard of anyone having this notification, thought it was sensible information to be sent out. It must have been from a pub lunch a week before, confirmed by dd also having the same text. It was a large city centre pub, high ceilings and well spaced, we weren’t close to anyone else. The notification doesn’t say where or when I was in contact and so no idea if I was actually there at the same time or ever went near to the person who has tested positive.
Just thought I’d share as I didn’t know this was a thing!

Thanks Nex that’s useful to know as I’m planning my first trip to a pub
