New York are lifting all covid restrictions this week

And yet the Daily Mail are reporting a 'leaked' document of WFH / masks forever and more restrictions in winter.

Surely the people that can will start to emigrate to countries that haven't fucked this up so badly if this way of living carries on and other countries return to normal...

The US has the highest death rate from Covid per capita in the developed world so I would not hold them up as a shing example of a country which had managed this well.

New York has a very high vaccination rate now. All adults have been offered the vaccine for free and most have taken up the offer. Vulnerable children have also been vaccinated.

So not surprising they now feel able to lift restrictions. When other countries/ regions have a similar vaccination rate they will be able to do the same. The UK is not there yet.

strangeshapedpotato · 16/06/2021 13:51

False

NY are NOT lifting all restrictions this week.

The state imposed restrictions are being lifted - the federal mandated ones remain in place.

Besides, cases there are low and falling rapidly, because they weren't too busy licking Modi's arse to pay attention to Delta.

@strangeshapedpotato thanks Dwight x

They've been vaccinating like mad including their 12 to 15 year olds.

HSHorror · 16/06/2021 13:55

Its not comparable though.
They had only moderna or pfizer. So more effective jabs. Also maybe less hesitancy without the AZ issues plus a choice of jab. My friends 3yrs older both jabbed in mar and dose 2 three weeks later. Dp had his 1st may and second mid jul... lot month after relaxations and still after revised date then add the 2-3w for it to work. If we try to move forward we might lose the jab plus it could be less effective.
In us 12+ will be offered a jab...
They have private hospitals so probably more capacity. The us generally is less populated. The dc have all from young age had masks on! Even in say playgrounds.
But yes it's mainy messed up or bad luck of less effective vax. Less effective means more people need to have it.

I really hope the ‘wfh forever’ thing doesn’t happen ☹️ But we’ll see I guess x

NannyAndJohn · 16/06/2021 13:59

Reckless.

I hope for their sake that Delta hasn't managed to get in through the back door.

Aposterhasnoname · 16/06/2021 14:00

What “leaked document”

Geamhradh · 16/06/2021 14:00

Great vaccine rollout and take up. High compliance with masks at the height.

Lots of the US may be not densely populated, but the OP is about New York. Hmm

I'm leaving my job and finding something that has to be done out of the home. Boris and his band of merry men can fuck off if they think I'm using my living room as an office for much longer! I'm only coping now as work are letting us come in a few days a week. If that changes I'm off.
Ontopofthesunset · 16/06/2021 14:04

There are no quarantine restrictions entering New York from the UK, however, so there is a strong chance Delta will get in.

Cafeaulait27 · 16/06/2021 14:08

@PinkSparklyPussyCat yeah, I can see why you might want to do that. I’m going on mat leave this year anyway, but I was kind of hoping to have a somewhat normal summer of going into the office and seeing my colleagues rather than working out of my lounge xx

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 16/06/2021 14:11

Unfortunately we have no spare room I can use and due to the layout of the flat I can't get away from work! Obviously Boris etc don't have the issue of a one bedroom flat!

It's not really about the fucking up, but I think we're starting to see different authorities having a different approach when it comes to the risk vs. benefit of unlocking....

We're starting to see similar happening in Europe -for example earlier today the French PM announced some restrictions were going to be relaxed in a few days, earlier than planned..there's so much travel between Germany and Spain now that Lufthansa are occasionally putting 747s and A350 on short haul holiday routes.

The UK government rightly or wrongly wants to continue to be be very cautious.

nordica · 16/06/2021 15:03

All my US friends in their 30s and 40s were fully vaccinated with Pfizer or Moderna by April (or earlier) so to some extent it's much easier to lift restrictions and rely on "personal responsibility" if all those who wanted to get vaccinated could do so early.

mobile.twitter.com/NYGovCuomo/status/1404887855927803906

70% of adults in New York have had one vaccination and 61.6% have had two vaccinations

Compared with 79.4% and 57.4% in the U.K.

So, not a huge difference

LucyLocketsPocket · 16/06/2021 15:09

Delta variant currently accounts for only 10% of cases in the US. That's the difference.

yearoflostyouth · 16/06/2021 17:05

Not just vulnerable children in NY eligible for vaccination: all over 12s are eligible.
That means the main source of transmission in the UK is not a factor in NY.
The UK regulatory MHRA has approved the vaccine as safe in children and said that the benefits outweigh the risks, but someone in the government with influence is blocking this in the UK.

www.nytimes.com/article/kids-covid-vaccine.html

Ultimately in the UK, vaccination of children is the only way out, and since the vaccine is approved (hence already deemed safe by independent experts at MHRA rather than BJ), we must question why optional vaccination of over 12s is being stalled in the UK.

bumbleymummy · 16/06/2021 17:10

We’re expecting the JCVI report on that soon.

yearoflostyouth · 16/06/2021 17:27

Yes, but remember the JCVI are not independent - they have been selected by the government.
The MHRA are independent experts whose expertise is in assessing safety data and weighing risks against benefits. MHRA has already approved the vaccine in over-12s.
JCVI are a government-appointed group of government advisers, selected because they think the same way as the government, by and large. Just like all other government-appointed advisers. E.g. the 'independent' one who just cleared various ministers of acting dodgily over contracts awarded to mates.

God, me too. And then I'd be happy and the proportion of my introverts-in-nice-houses colleagues who think WFH and social distancing forever would be the best thing since sliced bread would be happy, win-win! I'm sure I would do fine in New York. I have watched many episodes of both Friends and NYPD Blue.

(I have definitely noticed that the people who want to keep certain restrictions in place indefinitely for the greater good tend to be the people who would personally not be affected that much by whatever they're suggesting. "But WFH would be wonderful! You just need to show a bit of flexibility. I've converted my orangery into a home office and you can barely hear the children's nanny-supervised harp practice from the second floor. We also should put endless restrictions on international travel, since I have a secure job and family right down the motorway from here and I did all my travelling in my 20s. Oh and we should DEFINITELY keep masks on public transport - which I don't use myself, of course, I last got a bus in 2014, but I'm sure you plebs ahem I mean keyworker heart of the nation will put up with it.")

osbertthesyrianhamster · 16/06/2021 17:44

Good for them. Exactly, Golden!

osbertthesyrianhamster · 16/06/2021 17:48

Headed to a no restrictions state next month myself. Both children can have the vaccine there. It's literally take your pick, rock up and get it.

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 16/06/2021 17:50

The UK government rightly or wrongly wants to continue to be be very cautious.

When was it planning on starting to be very cautious?

osbertthesyrianhamster · 16/06/2021 17:56

@Ontopofthesunset

There are no quarantine restrictions entering New York from the UK, however, so there is a strong chance Delta will get in.
And? It's not showing to be killing or hospitalising great numbers. There will always be variants. Is the goal variant elimination then? That's not realistic. What there is, and I can only speak for myself and being from one state, is no longer seeking to stop it but instead going for vaccination and living with it and no mass testing of people who are not ill (the US doesn't use the LFT).
