Shameful treatment of children

Taster days cancelled, work experience cancelled, sports days cancelled, exams cancelled, fetes cancelled, extra curriculum activities cancelled, end of year school assembly cancelled, transition day cancelled, trips cancelled, proms cancelled, the list goes on....

For a virus that 80% of the population now have antibodies for. The kids will never have a chance to do some of these things again. SHAMEFUL.

OP posts:

Yes, those kids would be far better off if covid were out of control, hospitals full, parents off work ill and not earning, operations cancelled etc.

We all know it is shit, but sometimes wishing doesn't make things happen.

A lot of those are still going on in these parts.

There's nothing shameful about looking after the health of the population.

AlecTrevelyan006 · 16/06/2021 13:36

The OP is bang on.

Children are being suffering massively, not from Covid but our reaction to it.

It’s a disgrace

UpSlyDown · 16/06/2021 13:38

I understand the restrictions before as they were completely necessary for everyone as a population. I do think if we go backwards and increase restrictions again children will be hugely disproportionately affected and there will be a lot of anger from parents and young people.

flumposie · 16/06/2021 13:40

My daughter's transition days at the school I teach at have just been cancelled. Just waiting for the reaction from other parents when they get the official letter .

siestalady · 16/06/2021 13:40

I also agree with you OP. Really feel for children and young people.

MyBossIsATwat · 16/06/2021 13:41

Yes it’s bad that education has suffered so much and exams have been cancelled.

You’ve not really helped your card by including missed end of year assemblies in your list of shameful things though.

And some children are probably massively relieved that sports day was cancelled.

Witchesbelazy · 16/06/2021 13:42

I agree but people will soon be along to tell you they need to just get over it resilience and all the rest.

HSHorror · 16/06/2021 13:43

Well if gov would at least open up vax to kids it might reduce school outbreaks so at least they could be in school.

Blame the gov for allowing people to isolate at home from abroad with other family members going out to school or work!

UnmentionedElephantDildo · 16/06/2021 13:43

Not all those things are cancelled

GCSE and A levels pretty much had to be cancelled because of the decision to lock down and the hugely varying amount of time that pupils missed depending on whether there were cases in their school. Other exams, and mini-exams to help assess for GCSE/A levels are going ahead

Some places are still offering (limited) work experience or shadowing, but agree that's harder to find

Sports days are going ahead round here - the local sports arena is booked solid and I saw one underway earlier this week as I happened to walk past. Parents might not be invited though.

Fetes may or may not be cancelled depending on when and nature of event

Many extra curricular activities are running pretty normally

Assemblies are individual school decisions - depending on bubbles so might be by year group not whole school, but I doubt pupils mind

I agree that day trips may well be cancelled

Proms may be cancelled or the nature of the event changed (our school is having a more informal outdoor BBQ)

tonystarksrighthand · 16/06/2021 13:44

Agree with you OP

It's a joke

tappitytaptap · 16/06/2021 13:48

Yep, I always thought children were prioritised (including before I had DC, before someone starts) but my eyes have certainly been opened.

TheKeatingFive · 16/06/2021 13:48

Totally agree OP.

JeanClaudeVanDammit · 16/06/2021 13:51

Completely agree. The level of restrictions on children is too high. Easy for me to say as I’m not a business owner but I’d accept more restrictions on myself and my own activities in return for a bit more of a proportional response to children.

AnotherEmma · 16/06/2021 13:52

Yanbu

I've been furious about it since the beginning, when play areas were closed for so long. The poor kids couldn't go to school or their usual childcare setting, couldn't play with other children, and couldn't even go on the bloody swings.

That's just one thing. There are many many more.

deathbypostitnote · 16/06/2021 13:55

Yeah who needs grandparents and parents.

Long Covid isn't a thing. No children have it, either.

No child anywhere has suffocated to death with Covid.

Who cares if children with vulnerabilities would miss all the above and everything else besides.

Children don't need healthcare when hospitals are overrun with Covid patients, not at all.

Children have been in strict lockdown for over a year now, haven't they. No access to sporting events or education for what, over a year.

And 8 out of 10 people are immune now!

Effing brilliant.

KylieKoKo · 16/06/2021 13:59

Where is this 8 out of 10 people immune thing coming from? I am not doubting you but would like to read more on that if anyone has a link?

Thelm · 16/06/2021 14:01

What’s the alternative then? What do you actually want?

freeez · 16/06/2021 14:02

Oh no, not sports day!

Won't somebody think of the children!

QwertyGirly · 16/06/2021 14:03

Yea what a joke.

Sports day: going ahead with some simple tweaks.
Music lessons: going ahead
Music ensembles: many still functioning fine (we even have an online concert next week, so I can watch just when it's my kids and I don't have to listen to another 10 kids 'playing' the violin yyay)
Cricket club: still on
Football club: still on
DS1 (15) has a summer job it hasn't changed
DS2 (14) does small jobs like walking dogs and watering gardens, still on. He also volunteers for a foodbank, (unfortunately) still on I wish we didn't need foodbanks but we do.
Transition day: my secondary school still does them but a different format (visit is per feeder school, in the evenings, not all future pupils together)
Best of all: parents evening is online. Yessssss.

A bit of perspective is needed here.

DancesWithTortoises · 16/06/2021 14:05

There is no link because it isn't true.
JeanClaudeVanDammit · 16/06/2021 14:06

There is no link because it isn't true.

8 out of 10 people isn’t true, but 80% of the adult population have antibodies either from prior infection or vaccination.

Lostinacloud · 16/06/2021 14:06

Couldn’t agree more. In fact have just said the same on another thread.

If this delay is their attempt to get more young people to get vaccinated then I think they have just got it wrong big time. Many parents I know in the age range now eligible to get the vaccine are so angry that their kids are still suffering so much that they don’t see any point to testing it out on themselves as they are young enough to be unlikely to be seriously ill.
We were told we were all sacrificing everything while we waited for the elderly and vulnerable to be protected, well that has happened so where is normal life back for our children?

There will always be variants, there will always be regional clusters but children will not always be young.

Petitefiloute · 16/06/2021 14:09

I'm with you OP. I've followed every rule to the letter, been out of business for months on end, people are getting drunk and mingling at the pub, at weddings, yet my DC can't have their transition day, leavers party and so on. Of course some would like us all being locked up forever but parents and grandparents are fully jabbed and out there socialising, so this argument doesn't hold anymore.
