Shameful treatment of children

Taster days cancelled, work experience cancelled, sports days cancelled, exams cancelled, fetes cancelled, extra curriculum activities cancelled, end of year school assembly cancelled, transition day cancelled, trips cancelled, proms cancelled, the list goes on....

For a virus that 80% of the population now have antibodies for. The kids will never have a chance to do some of these things again. SHAMEFUL.

It's astounding that parents have been complicit in allowing this situation develop for their children

Always strikes me that it is the selfishness of the parents that comes out - they are always worried about themselves rather than their children (i.e. their own health when it comes to coronavirus)

It is absolutely NOT what parents should do - they should not put themselves before their children

And anyone saying that these ceremonies, events and milestones are not important for children is literally a selfish twat.

I totally agree with all of this. I’m staggered by how little some parents seem to care about the impact restrictions have had on their own children.

DfE guidance has always said 2m - 15 minutes and 1m - 1 minute.

motherrunner · 16/06/2021 14:43

Sorry, PHE guidance!

Remmy123 · 16/06/2021 14:47

There is no need to cancel sports day or school fairs - these are ways the schools make money!!

It's all outside so what's the issue!!

PasstheBucket89 · 16/06/2021 14:48

Yup, But.... let's make sure the pubs are open!! we can't be doing without them!!

Our nations love affair with pubs is beyond me!!

Onedaysomedaynowadays · 16/06/2021 14:50

@KylieKoKo

Where is this 8 out of 10 people immune thing coming from? I am not doubting you but would like to read more on that if anyone has a link?
The ONS released it the other day... Can't find the link though sorry

Some people are not thinking about all this in an objective way. You don't just have a deadly virus, wafting into the country for a couple of months, and then it blows away in the wind, and all is well. Everyone has seen what a virus can cause, and how it can spread, If you did not have a government , and experts to try and guide the country, and make all the rules, you would just have millions of people just doing their own things at all times, and thousands dropping dead like flies for years and years.

Most appear to be cancelled. You might think it's not an issue but the teachers/ta/parents running them obviously do since most aren't running.
Dddccc · 16/06/2021 14:57

So you prefer 1000s to die instead so a child does not miss a few events that are crap anyway

AlecTrevelyan006 · 16/06/2021 15:00

Thousands of people are no longer dying

That was the point of vaccinations

MustardRose · 16/06/2021 15:05

Two hours later and the OP hasn't returned. Odd - starting such a controversial thread and then not coming back to it... why would anyone do that?

TheKeatingFive · 16/06/2021 15:08

so a child does not miss a few events that are crap anyway

It’s a whole generation of children and just because you didn’t enjoy them does not make them ‘crap’ Hmm

Whilst it is really crap on kids and always have been, things like this aren't cancelled in all areas. They're all going ahead in DD1s school and the school I work in.
4PawsGood · 16/06/2021 15:11

80% of people may have antibodies, but that doesn’t mean they are completely immune. For example many people have only had the first vaccine and I’ve seen the immunity against the delta variant quoted as only about 33% (Pfizer, less for AZ).

AnotherEmma · 16/06/2021 15:12

"I’ve been astounded by the number of parents putting their anxieties before their own children’s well-being. It’s just bad parenting."

Yep

Slow day in the newsroom, then something else cropped up?

The kids will recover, although I think a lot of parents may need help.

I can't see all this 'think of the children' being sustained for very long though - cuts to children's services, youth groups, mental health support, etc. will continue without being reversed. Teaching will go back to being seen as undervalued and underpaid childcare. And the older generations will keep on voting to protect their triple-locked pensions, bus passes, etc. and expect the Covid generation to work harder to pay for it.

Plus ça change.

Yeah, and how many of those things are essential? Get a grip before you drown in your own hyperbole.
AlecTrevelyan006 · 16/06/2021 15:17

Most things in life are not ‘essential’

Chloemol · 16/06/2021 15:17

Oh go away

KillerFlamingo · 16/06/2021 15:18

Personally, I'm so sad that I didn't get to watch my DS in a cute reception nativity play and now I don't get to watch him at his sports day or go to any school events or parties with him and his little classmates.

He's my only child and he'll only be in reception once, I tried so long to have a child and these were milestones I was genuinely looking forward to. Sad

Castlepeak · 16/06/2021 15:27

Much better to deal with the trauma of knowing you brought home the disease that killed your parents. Angry

You do realize that many of those kids live in households with vulnerable people. Or do you only think about your own healthy family?

Cookiecrisps · 16/06/2021 15:30

We have carried on as near normal in the primary where I work (except in year group bubbles) as in no masks, no distancing between children and adults and told to teach in the normal way. Sports day and leavers assembly are going ahead outside with parents and transition day is going ahead too.

Whilst this is great for the children, I think the staff have had to accept a lot of risk to keep it normal for the children. It was especially hard in January when cases were sky rocketing and lots of places were closed but we were not allowed to wear masks (the head is anti mask), not eligible for a vaccine at that time and told to carry on as normal for children in school whilst teaching children at home remotely at the same time. It was worth it but it meant that I felt I couldn’t meet up outside when you could meet 1 other person as there were covid cases in school and I was wary about passing it to friends and family.

The children have lost out due to covid but so has every age group.

Ugzbugz · 16/06/2021 15:33

Ive never been in DS secondary school let alone met one teacher or spoken to them part from the 3 I got an online slot for.

Hes back in full Time mask wearing whilst literally half the people in shops don't wear them now.

So none of these adults give a fuck why should kids? They have been blamed for passing it around like how dare they go to school.

Oblomov21 · 16/06/2021 15:37

"Yes, those kids would be far better off if covid were out of control, hospitals full, parents off work ill and not earning, operations cancelled etc."

But hospitals aren't full. The latest variant, whilst being very transmissible, is being contained. We are coping.

AffableApple · 16/06/2021 15:38

We're all suffering, but it is what is is. I'd rather my parents were alive TBH, and Little Robbie and Little Jemina have lots of things they can do now anyway so Hmm

We start doing a free-for-all like some seem to think is ok, and we'll be in lockdown again with Christmas and another academic year cancelled. Boo hoo to this thread.
