When to schedule vaccine for?

KM38 · 08/06/2021 10:30

Finally have our letters though for our first jabs 🥳🥳🥳 neither DH or I can attend on the date given due to work commitments for him (he’s offshore) and I have a medical appointment that can’t be rescheduled.
Appointment given for the Monday. I can reschedule us at a different vaccination centre for the Thursday evening or the following Monday evening. We’re away on a little staycation that weekend Fri morning-mon afternoon.
Anyone experienced many side effects with a first vaccine? I’m keen just to get it as soon as possible but DH is concerned we’ll have side effects and it’ll put a dampener on the weekend away 🤷🏻‍♀️

Nope, never seen a post from anyone with side effects Grin

Obviously I'm joking as just about every other thread is about this Grin

Bottom line, there's absolutely no way to predict how you'll feel afterwards so I guess when you choose to book depends on your personal circumstances. No one can tell you anything about how it will affect you and how I felt has no bearing on how you'll feel

Why not assume you might feel i'll and plan accordingly

riveted1 · 08/06/2021 10:36

personally I would just book as soon as possible

cases are rising so risk of COVID is getting higher, you have no idea what might change in terms of policy/stocks of vaccine over the next couple of weeks

side effects are minor for most people - especially in the case of mRNA vaccines. Even with the viral vector ones they tend to be limited to 24 hours.

This is what I told myself last Thursday, had a big work assignment due today, going on holiday tomorrow so also had some fears. It has all gone fine and had nothing but a sore arm for 24 hours Grin

Seeline · 08/06/2021 10:36

I felt awful for several days after my first AZ shot, so would leave it until after your break. Was fine with the second.

Don't know what the situation is with the other types of vaccine though.

KM38 · 08/06/2021 10:44

@BelleBlueBell 🤣🤣 I’ve deliberately stayed away from all covid threads 🙈 should have just had a search before I posted lol.

@riveted1 Yeah that’s my thinking too. I think I’ll just schedule mine for the Thursday night and let DH do what he wants with his lol

@Seeline everyone I know that’s had side effects has been the opposite and had it after their second so interesting to hear how you felt after your first! No idea what jab we’re getting 🤷🏻‍♀️ I’m assuming AZ 🤷🏻‍♀️

@KM38

given the timing of your vaccines aren't you both under 40? If so you won't be offered AZ

KM38 · 08/06/2021 10:54

@riveted1 Oh really?! Yes, 30 and 33. I thought it was under 30s not being offered AZ 🤷🏻‍♀️

Yes definitely, there was a change in policy a while back :)

you'll only be offered slots in clinics who have pfizer or moderna that day

KM38 · 08/06/2021 11:05

@riveted1 Ahh ok! That’ll explain why I couldn’t get booked into any of our local vaccination centres despite there being lots of days scheduled then 😊 they’re all doing second doses of AZ. We’ve had to reschedule to one that’s an hours drive away as it was the only available ones 😊

kimlo · 08/06/2021 12:31

AZ everyone I know that had it had sode effects after the first, not much after the second.

Pfizer the worst anyone I know had was a sore arm, but apparebtly the seconds worse.

idontlikealdi · 08/06/2021 13:05

I was in bed for 24 hours after AZ as was DH. No way I could have gone anywhere couldn't even take the kids to school.

nordica · 08/06/2021 13:11

The AZ vaccine seems to have particularly harsh side effects but Pfizer and Moderna don't- and if anything it's the 2nd dose of the mRNA vaccines that tends to affect people more. Everyone I know who had them has had fatigue, head aches or felt achey but only for the first 24 hours or so. Those who've had covid before seems to react more to the vaccines.

ChocOrange1 · 08/06/2021 13:37

I wouldn't drive an hour, just keep checking the website and one will come up in your area. It kept trying to send me to a centre 35miles away, and then one popped up 5 miles away for a few days time.

iloveredwine · 08/06/2021 13:40

I've had both the jabs AZ and had no side effects at all with either. Not even a sore arm. My friend was ill after the first one with flu symptoms but no one else I know had any symptoms at all.

CointreauVersial · 08/06/2021 13:41

I had a colonoscopy appointment clash with my first vaccine appointment (AZ).

I postponed the vaccine, as I didn't think attending a hospital for a procedure with a temperature and post-jab headache would be a good idea!

Of course, I didn't have a single side-effect, and needn't have bothered. Hmm

weegiepower · 08/06/2021 13:45

I only know one person that had side effects after Pfizer or moderna and that person fairly recently had had covid. They didn't get side effects after second one just first. I didn't get side effects after either that really effected me, I had a week of complete exhausted after second but that's it

Frankie4me · 08/06/2021 13:46

Given it’s a matter of days, I’d wait and go on the Monday to be safe. Pfizer first jab I had a sore arm for a day or two, but some colleagues did have minor symptoms. The 2nd dose was worse - headache, fatigue and feverish for a day or so.

KM38 · 08/06/2021 13:58

Thanks everyone 😊 seems like a bit of a mixed bag with symptoms etc. Happy to take my chances, I’d rather just be vaccinated!

@ChocOrange1 Driving an hour isn’t ideal but DHs work schedule is pretty tight with being offshore and I’m on Mat leave at the moment with out first DC so I’d rather just know we had them booked for while he’s home and I have someone else around to help with childcare on the off chance that I have some of the more severe side effects 😊 and if we both feel rotten then at least the 2 of us can muddle through with baby 😊 There seems to be an 8 day block where I can reschedule us locally but DH is away right over that period.

OP posts:
KM38 · 08/06/2021 14:00

@nordica Yeah I have known a few that have had covid to have pretty severe side effects. Neither of us have (as far as we know!) so hoping we’ll escape that. Glad to finally have our letters! Feels like we’ve been waiting ages! I know the second dose is more likely to give symptoms so we’ll deal with that when it comes 😊

OP posts:
KM38 · 08/06/2021 14:02

@CointreauVersial Typical 🤣 although I dare say if you hadn’t postponed it you would have ended up feeling rubbish 🙈 Sod’s law!

Waxonwaxoff0 · 08/06/2021 16:11

I had Pfizer and had no side effects. Had it done on a Saturday, went out for dinner 6 hours later and went on holiday on the Monday.

CantEnjoySummer · 08/06/2021 16:23

My DH and I both had Pfizer (1 dose so far)

We both had a sore arm and I was a little nauseous the next day but nothing that stopped our lives.

But I have friends and family who've been stuck in bed. So it's hard to know.

KM38 · 08/06/2021 17:33

@Waxonwaxoff0 @CantEnjoySummer Just seems to affect everyone so differently doesn’t it?!
DH has booked our wee trip as a gift for my birthday and it’ll be our first trip with baby so I’m worried that it’ll be ruined if we have some of the more severe side effects but at the same time, putting off getting the vaccine for the sake of a trip feels really selfish 😓

OP posts:
CantEnjoySummer · 08/06/2021 17:42

I don't think it's selfish.

I got the text for my second and delayed booking until they offered me dates after half term as we had lots of plans and I didn't want to jeopardise any.

Getting my second this week and it'll be a 10.5 week gap.

If you can get yours a week later then it's hardly an issue?

KM38 · 08/06/2021 17:46

@CantEnjoySummer Yeah it’s literally a few days later as we can’t make it to the original appointment they sent so it’s either the Thursday or the Monday. I’m rescheduled for the Thursday currently. I’ll have a think about it and see whether to wait until the Monday

OP posts:
CantEnjoySummer · 08/06/2021 18:29

I'd 100% wait. Wouldn't even be a question for me.

Someone else will take your Thursday spot. It's a non issue in my opinion.
