Has anyone managed to get a closer second Jab?

LifesTooShortYOLO · 05/06/2021 22:16

My second vaccine is booked for 11 weeks after my first which I had last weekend so 10 weeks to go now until the second dose.
The problem with the system is you have to cancel your appointment in order to be able to look for any other appointments available so it's such a sambas to cancel what you've got to see if there's a sooner appointment!
Has anyone had any success in doing this?
Or should I leave it and just wait for my second on that date?

No, the studies compared second jab after 3 weeks vs 12 weeks onwards, nothing in between.

Timeturnerplease · 06/06/2021 22:07

Stop cancelling your second jab, uts affecting the roll out of first jabs!! Keep your appointments

The only date I could get is three days after our second baby is due. That’s exactly 12 weeks from the first, so I really can’t delay it further. Am a heavily pregnant primary teacher spending hours a day with 30 children in a tiny windowless classroom.

What do you suggest I do? Leave the appointment and potentially have to miss it?

@Francofilly

I had Moderna on the first day it was used at a Hub. I gambled yesterday on cancelling second appointment in the hope of getting one sooner. Was then offered exact same date/time as the one I had cancelled! 😂
my experience too !! It was reported in the Telegraph that the government will now be moving second doses for 40 plus to the 8 week mark from next week. Maybe we will be able to move our Moderna doses too
LubaLuca · 06/06/2021 22:16

My second one was 9 weeks after the first. The date for my husband's second jab was set when he had his first though, and that is exactly 12 weeks apart - I hope he gets a letter to tell him it's been brought forward.

Doses: Efficacy after 12 week gap for AZ is 81%, efficacy after 6 week gap is 55%. From a study by University of Oxford released in February,

So 12 weeks is the optimum, which is why I’m wondering why everyone is moving theirs forward. We want the vaccines to work the best they can, don’t we?

Iggi999 · 06/06/2021 23:30

I suppose it's the risk of catching Covid before you get the second dose - you'd be better off having had a 2nd dose quicker if you did become positive in the next few weeks, though ideally better to wait till 12. It's a gamble.

EasterIssland · 07/06/2021 12:14

over 40s can now moved their second dose if they want to sooner

@Paulina23

Anyone had luck with the moderna?
None of my Moderna or Pfizer friends have been able to bring it forward so far. Seems to only work with AZ. Brought mine forward by 3 weeks and can’t wait to have it.

I think that’s outdated. AZ has been shown to be more of a slow burner than Pfizer i.e it takes a bit longer for efficacy to build. So, the sooner they’re double dosed the better for most people, especially as the variant situation is a bit precarious at the moment.
Extrapepperoni · 07/06/2021 13:05

DH, 42 - AZ - was able to rebook at 8 weeks rather than 11 (brought forward from mid July to end of June)

Me, 38 - Pfizer - website still only offers appointments at 11 weeks (I have cancelled 2nd appointment and keep checking every few days)

Think it has more to do with age group than vaccine offered tbh.

FlorenceWintle · 07/06/2021 13:14

Look, everyone needs to make their own decision and I’m certainly not telling anyone what to do. I’m just saying have a think about it before you rush to bring it forward and make sure it’s actually what you want.

I’m under 50 and am waiting til 12 weeks, (unless otherwise advised by a medical professional) as it gives the best protection possible and I’m at no greater risk from Covid than I was when this started and in fact, at less risk of catching it than at many points over the previous 15 months as cases are very low.

Partly because it is mainly for AZ and older age groups, vulnerable cohorts so may not have long left on its Use By date - I am happy to help not waste any.

The %efficacy has been revised and revisited so often that I don't think your data is the most up to date any more. And it was never 'optimum' in the truest sense.

And then, why not? We are still opening up and I would very much like to be part of that rather than still worrying about whatifs and whenevers.

Dogoodfeelgood · 07/06/2021 13:20

I managed to bring it forward 4 days! Not great but something. I’ll try again soon and hopefully inch closer Grin

Dogoodfeelgood · 07/06/2021 13:21

Mine is Pfizer

TheMerrickBoy · 07/06/2021 13:24

Closer geographically by a long way - and closer by just 5 days to the first! Very pleased I will get to have it at the centre where I live now!

BarbaraofSeville · 07/06/2021 14:23

@LemonCake79

I cancelled mine as it isn't until August. I wasn't offered anything sooner though. Fortunately I was able to re-book the original appointment slot.
I did the same thing. My second is on 9 July, cancelled it and was offered 7th instead, so I just rebooked my original slot.
mrsknottschicken · 07/06/2021 14:51

Tempted to do this - my sister did hers today. She is younger than me (she's 43 and I am 45). I am 8 weeks post my first jab this week. What I would like to know is whether there is any benefit to waiting for 12 weeks. We are in quite a low case rate area - I think it is about 9 or 10 cases per 100k - but we are not that far from Hart, which is a hotspot for the Delta variant, I believe.

Heathofhares · 07/06/2021 14:55

Yes. My DH but that might be because he had a birthday that took him into another age bracket

Billi77 · 09/06/2021 10:19

I did the risky cancel and ended up with a later date!

Sebw · 09/06/2021 10:39

I managed to bring my moderna forward two days but 80 miles closer to centre within walking distance Grin

Chwaraeteg · 09/06/2021 11:06

I've been able to bring my second Moderna jab forward. But I'm in Bristol and was told to do this by my dd's primary school (on the advice of the DfE) because the Delta variant is causing havoc in primary schools here. I don't know what is hapoening in other areas.

In fact, once I had had my first jab, my 2nd was automatically cancelled Confused

Chwaraeteg · 09/06/2021 11:09

Also, I'm in my mid 30's, not cv/carer etc if that's relevant.

Billi77 · 09/06/2021 22:41

Is seems like one can bring AstraZeneca forward. Less so with Pfizer (I had) and moderna.
