Has anyone managed to get a closer second Jab?

LifesTooShortYOLO · 05/06/2021 22:16

My second vaccine is booked for 11 weeks after my first which I had last weekend so 10 weeks to go now until the second dose.
The problem with the system is you have to cancel your appointment in order to be able to look for any other appointments available so it's such a sambas to cancel what you've got to see if there's a sooner appointment!
Has anyone had any success in doing this?
Or should I leave it and just wait for my second on that date?

Isn’t 12 weeks the optimum time though? Why are we all taking it upon ourselves to bring it forward and therefore make it less effective? Or is 8 weeks the same as 12?

TheVolturi · 06/06/2021 16:15

I thought they'd said initially the jabs should be 3 weeks apart?

FlorenceWintle · 06/06/2021 16:20

3 weeks was debunked ages ago, the studies show 12 is the most effective but the government changed it to 8 for the over 50s and vulnerable, presumably because the drop in efficacy at 8 weeks is counterbalanced by their increased risks from Covid. Everyone else should be sticking to 12 though.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 06/06/2021 16:23

Yes. You go online and select the 'manage' button. You cancel your existing one and get another, usually starting in about 48 hours or they wouldn't be offering.

I did mine this morning and am now rebooked for Tuesday.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 06/06/2021 16:25

Sorry, I meant to say that "if you are sent the invitation to rebook"

I doubt it would be as smooth in areas where the invitation is not being sent out

Peppapeg · 06/06/2021 16:26

Yes I cancelled my second and it went straight to the rebook page, managed to get an appointment just down the road at the local pharmacy and 3 weeks sooner.

LemonCake79 · 06/06/2021 16:44

I cancelled mine as it isn't until August. I wasn't offered anything sooner though. Fortunately I was able to re-book the original appointment slot.

NamiSwan · 06/06/2021 16:59

I think it depends on what vaccine you have. I know a few people who had AZ who cancelled and rebooked and got their second jab a few weeks sooner. But then someone else I know heard of this, cancelled their jab appointment and couldn't get another one till a couple of weeks later than their original appointment! The only difference seemed to be they had the moderna jab. So there is some risk to cancelling and rebooking (especially as lots of people seem to be doing this now)

BunnyRuddington · 06/06/2021 17:09

Yes, I've done it for DH today. His second jab was booked for the 27th and I've revoked it for tomorrow.

Please don't ask why he didn't do it himself, I think that would be a whole other thread...

DwangelaForever · 06/06/2021 17:10

Stop cancelling your second jab, uts affecting the roll out of first jabs!! Keep your appointments.

Grossbuttrue · 06/06/2021 17:15

@DwangelaForever I don't see a problem with bringing forward AZ vaccines as people in their thirties are not being given AZ as a first dose.

Tulipomania · 06/06/2021 17:28

DwangelaForever it's government policy now for certain categories.

BunnyRuddington · 06/06/2021 17:35

*rebooked

We did this after DH received a message asking him to cancel and rebook. Perhaps it's the people in charge of the vaccines that you need to speak to if you're upset about this?

JustMeAndWheatley · 06/06/2021 18:08

Friend of mine who is a vaccinator says it’s not because they’re very good at using up all the spare slots and vaccines for walk-ins at the end of the day. Maybe it varies from place to place though.

It’s literally on the news and there are adverts telling people to cancel second jabs and rebook!

GOODCAT · 06/06/2021 18:18

I am over 50 so meant to be able to bring forward. Got the text allowing me to do this but 2nd jab under two weeks away by then. Not willing to gamble going later or to an even less convenient location as the gap was a little over 12 weeks anyway.

System ought to allow you to check you can get an earlier appointment at an ok location rather than force you to gamble.

leafyygreens · 06/06/2021 19:11

anyone tried for pfizer?

I can't rebook mine for earlier than 12 weeks annoyingly!

Francofilly · 06/06/2021 19:18

I had Moderna on the first day it was used at a Hub. I gambled yesterday on cancelling second appointment in the hope of getting one sooner. Was then offered exact same date/time as the one I had cancelled! 😂

BunnyRuddington · 06/06/2021 19:18

Not willing to gamble going later or to an even less convenient location as the gap was a little over 12 weeks anyway. I've moved DH's earlier. I work in an area where the virus is spreading so I'd rather get him vaccinated sooner rather than later.

looptheloopinahulahoop · 06/06/2021 19:21

Yes people have been doing it for weeks now.

Bluntness100 · 06/06/2021 19:26

Has anyone ever not been able to rebook earlier?

Peppapeg · 06/06/2021 19:43

Mine was 12 weeks onwards until around a fortnight ago, it wouldn't let me book sooner. plenty of appointments though- but it's AZ which is mainly for second jabs now. Pfizer and moderna no Idea!
iNeverFinishAnyth · 06/06/2021 19:56

I got a text from NHS saying as I am in a priority group (over 50) I am eligible for my second appointment sooner. I cancelled the original appointment, booked the replacement.......same day, same place, ten minutes earlier Hmm

Iggi999 · 06/06/2021 20:16

Can you explain that a bit more? So if I (in my 50s) move my vaccine forward it will be less effective - but will give me the (reduced) increased protection from the second dose sooner? Is that it? I've currently got AZ2 booked for ten weeks after the first one. Don't know whether to change.
