Second vaccine already?

Have been invited by text to book my second vaccine but is only 4 weeks since my first. The guidance I have read says it is more effective if the gap between them is nearer 12 weeks. Does anyone know if this has changed or seen any other research that says otherwise?

I'm part of a vaccine trial so may have had AZ or a new type and we are having our second after 4 weeks. I think the 12 weeks was decided on to get as many their 1st jab as possible before starting on 2nd doses. Originally it was going to be a shorter gap than that.

Do you mean you have to book it now or can you choose a date in 8 (or however many weeks time?)

Afaik they are shortening the time to get as many people fully vaccinated to try and beat the delta variant but I don't think it's compulsory

The 12 weeks gap is more effective for AZ. I personally would not reduce the interval between the 2 doses to anything shorter than 8 weeks.

If you had had Pfizer or Moderna, 4 weeks should be fine.

The longer gap does seem to be beneficial. That is however in static conditions, with the increase in the delta mutation for example the benefits of having that second dose at this time may well outweigh waiting longer for a small difference in efficacy by waiting longer.

3 weeks is the standard for MRNA in eg Switzerland and several other European countries and US. U.K. was unique in its approach to vaccinate as many as possible - worked for the then Kent variant, current science suggests doesn’t work for the now dominant Indian variant.

Only dates are for next week. Not in Bolton but am in an area that seems to be ahead with vaccinations.
