I am happy this evening
www.telegraph.co.uk/politics/2021/05/30/uk-vaccine-passport-plans-scrapped/

Ideally I would like them to go one step further and write a “covid freedom bill” (inspired by in part Florida) that:
-banned private business requiring vaccine proof
-ended all mask mandates
-ended all covid restrictions
-any future covid restrictions can be challenged in court if they are not proportionate
-parliament must vote on all future covid restrictions
-pardoned all people prosecuted under the coronavirus act 2020

But very good news in my opinion and a huge step in the right direction.

They only scrapped it because the information is now on your NHS app under the the travel section

Welcome to MN OP - interesting first post! Or are you a name changer Hmm

XenoBitch · 30/05/2021 23:33

Can't read as stuck behind a paywall, but that is great news if plans to introduce domestic vaccine passports has been scrapped.
All it would have done is introduce a 2 tier society. Wrong on so many levels.

Tealightsandd · 30/05/2021 23:36

Doesn't sound very free. So you're not for Freedom then?

A 2 tier society. You mean when the vulnerable particularly those not protected by vaccines (people with blood cancer, for example) don't have the choice of staying as safe as possible under the circumstances?

A true defender of freedom would support vaccine certificates/passports/whatever the name. Because they offer a choice. Bars and restaurants and other public establishments free to choose whether to admit vaccinated only, or not.

Of course the UK scrapping them doesn't mean other countries will. They might still be needed for international travel depending where you're going.

You can already challenge government decisions in the court.

Imsoexitedandiwillhideit · 31/05/2021 00:01

Yes but op makes clear that courts would be able to overturn descisions if they are not proportional rather than if they are unlawful/unconstitutional
Babygotblueyes · 31/05/2021 00:23

Why do you see this as good news? Genuinely curious. Cant read the article because of the paywall.

gobblegobbleturkey · 31/05/2021 00:31

Cannot read the article, unfortunately, but I would take it with caution - I have read something similar a week or so ago about Israel where they have apparently decided to drop the health passport for domestic use, just wondering if there's something else to it ...

Thisisus909 · 31/05/2021 01:04

I find myself increasingly pissed off at the prospect on basic freedoms being lost because people are choosing not to get the vaccine. I’d love to see how many people hold onto their commitment to vaccine refusal if we made it a requirement to go to the pub! The fact that we are even debating NHS staff refusing to have it done is total madness.

Ostara212 · 31/05/2021 01:19

Can't read the article but can't see any other outlets carrying it. I would be amazed if they drop it.

Seems more likely a delay to lockdown easing will give them time to work on it and then they'll be introduced later.

I hope it's true but hope left a long time ago.

^^ this.

No one has to have it, but itvexemots you from holding certain jobs and attending certain events etc.

I find myself increasingly pissed off at the prospect of basic freedoms being lost because people like you are too terrified to leave the house demanding people have a vaccine.

if you're too frightened to go out quaking in your broom cupboard feel free to stay in

RedRiverShore · 31/05/2021 06:36

That is good news, I have had the vaccine myself as I am older but don't agree with these passports.

Spekoppar · 31/05/2021 07:00

banned private business requiring vaccine proof

I think private businesses should be able to impose public health measures measures that bets protect their customers/ clients/ service users, staff and the business itself during a public health emergency such as this. That would include vaccine passports (with those who are medically exempt having a formal exemption).

So for example if the business owner deemed that its customers were likely to be vaccinated, but reluctant to attend if non vaccinated people were present, they should be able to make that call.

(And to be clear I’m talking about public health measures during this time, not a blanket allowance of restrictions on any old whim).

VaccineSticker · 31/05/2021 07:16

You realise that the less the vaccine uptake is, the less likely more freedoms will return?!

Flyonawalk · 31/05/2021 08:17

This is good news and consistent with current laws.

For years it has been U.K. legal to discriminate on grounds of age, gender, race, sexual orientation, creed, and health status. Making it legal to discriminate according to whether or not a person has had a medical procedure would set a dangerous precedent.

User135644 · 31/05/2021 08:19

Boris surrenders to the mob.

Temp023 · 31/05/2021 08:21

Think vaccine passports are excellent idea! Proper, legal exemptions for medical reasons. Those that don’t feel they need to “risk” the vaccine because the rest of us have “risked” it, can stay at home,

Flyonawalk · 31/05/2021 08:23

*my second sentence should read ‘has been illegal’ not ‘has been U.K. legal’! Of course discrimination is not and never should be legal.

User135644 · 31/05/2021 09:13

They need to bring something in so business can stay open through winter if cases surge when the schools/colleges open again in September.

It's no good saying 'freedom' if Boris's refusal to stand up to the mob, leaves businesses having to be restricted or closed again down the line.

megletthesecond · 31/05/2021 09:21

Sounds like a great way to give us a third wave this winter.
