Has anybody else decided not to have their 2nd astrazeneca vaccine

I had my first astrazeneca vaccine back in March and was really not that happy to have it but I was group 6 and millions of people had already had theirs by then so I was a little more confident to have it. I was very ill for 8 weeks afterwards headache nausea and dizzy spells and during this time the blood clots started to happen and at first it was only a worry after your 1st vaccine then it's now coming to light that's its a risk after your 2nd also. I'm aware you can get blood clots with lots of things but being under 40 and having previously had blood clots I just don't think I can take the risk. Is there anybody else who's had the 1st and now doesn't think they will have their 2nd?

Just so you know/ to put your mind at ease, clots occur mostly within 2 weeks and always within 4 weeks of the first dose. I’m absolutely sure no clots have been reported in the second dose.

17 have been reported apparently.

You're absolutely wrong.

I'm day 6 post vaccination and still feeling crap. Had a really strong reaction on day 4 that ended up with me in A&E. So now I don't know what to do about my 2nd when the time comes around.
It's all very well the folk that had a mild or no reaction lecturing us about it but I was genuinely terrified on Monday and have never felt that poorly. I can't go through that again. My GP said it would be 'perfectly reasonable' for me not to have dose 2.

sleepwouldbenice · 02/06/2021 23:22

No I actually gratefully had it early

Of course the gp/nurse said it was nothing to do with the jab, they are paid to say that!

Shock some really paranoid views on here.

Yes - I would have the second AZ jab - in fact I have already. No symptoms with either jab. You're less likely to have side effects from the second jab.

OK, I had a strong reaction to the first vaccine. I have also had covid. The side effects of the vaccine were nothing compared to covid.

I'm booked in for my 2nd shot on Saturday. I'll be there with my sleeve rolled up.

TortoiseShed · 03/06/2021 13:04

I have had my second jab. I'm not thrilled that there is any risk associated with it, even though that risk is very small. But, it seems like the least worst option for me. I didn't really have side effects with the firs jab, so that part doesn't especially bother me this time (famous last words)!

The thing is that covid is still a big risk. And I'd rather be fully vaccinated if I can help it and I'm quite lucky I am so early.

I saw on another thread people reporting side effects from the other vaccines too, some of them serious, and it's interesting to note that the one getting the most press is the one where nobody is making a profit. Not to sound too tinfoil hatty!

Anyway, it sucks that choices are take your chances with covid, take your chances with vaccines or maintain social distancing for the foreseeable. None are perfect or nice options, but I don't see any others really, speaking as an individual. I'm aware that governments could have made other choices, but at an individual level, there aren't any other choices as far as I can see. So, choose your poison really! Horrible times and not great choices.

TortoiseShed · 03/06/2021 13:05

For some people taking their chances with covid will be fine, but I have a few health conditions and an asthmatic DD, so for me it isn't worth the risk. Makes my decision a little easier anyway.

inmyslippers · 03/06/2021 13:06

Had the first vaccine. Not had my second I'm terrified by it.

HmmmmmmInteresting · 03/06/2021 13:12

@orangebeach

I'm not having my second one yet. I had my first in March. A week or two later my arms started hurting so so much -my joints are in pain, the injection site still hurts and my hands felt as if they just wouldn't work, almost numb, and so stiff, like they weren't my hands. I felt as if I couldn't hold anything properly. I wake up with aching arms. Never known anything like it. The nurse at the surgery said it's not connected to the jab but I think it is. Govt policy is to get everyone vaccinated so the surgery isn't going to say anything different really.
Yikes. I know someone who had similar (but more severe than yours) starting the day after having the AZ jab. In this case the medical team are working on the assumption that it is vaccine-related.
Coffeeislife04 · 03/06/2021 13:14

There is no reason not to have it the risk of blood clots is very low and if your on any other regular medication they all come with side effects and risks. I've had my first second due next week and I will be having it. I was in bed 4 days after my last jab but it was nothing compared to when I had covid in January.

WishingHopingThinkingPraying · 03/06/2021 13:18

I definitely want my second now that the Indian variant is spreading and one shot doesn't do a great job against it. I've 4 small kids and don't want to carry it home to them either so DH and me being fully vaccinated is the best protection I can currently give them too.

80Days · 03/06/2021 13:41

I’m still planning on having my 2nd AZ jab.

I didn’t have very bad side effects after the first one - I felt rotten the day after, and had a sore arm for a week, but that was the worst of it.

As for the blood clot risk, I’m pretty sure that the risks of getting a blood clot would be much higher if I actually caught covid, and there’s too much covid around for me to be confident I won’t be exposed to it sooner or later. Plus I’m in group 6 for underlying health conditions, which increases my chances of getting a severe case of covid if I do catch it.

So personally, thinking about the risk : benefit balance, getting the 2nd dose of the AZ vaccine feels like the best decision for me.
But it’s a personal decision for everyone.

Endofether · 03/06/2021 13:42

If you’re at high risk from covid then have it. Although isn’t it basically under 50-% effective against the Delta variant anyway ?

Etulosba · 03/06/2021 13:48

Although isn’t it basically under 50-% effective against the Delta variant anyway ?

What does that mean?

Endofether · 03/06/2021 14:15

@Etulosba exactly what it says ?

TortoiseShed · 03/06/2021 14:37

I think the AZ vaccine is not fully effective at completely preventing you from getting it, but it vastly improves your chances of not going to hospital with it as less severe. I don't mind (though would prefer not to) getting a dose of covid if I know it is unlikely to end up with me in hospital or, well, dead.

Endofether · 03/06/2021 14:46

@TortoiseShed I had Covid and was basically a cold

MarshaBradyo · 03/06/2021 14:48

I feel the opposite, wish I’d had the second already like a few people I know

July though

TortoiseShed · 03/06/2021 14:52
@TortoiseShed I had Covid and was basically a cold
Yes, I think for some people, taking their chances with covid is probably preferable to having a vaccine they aren't comfortable with. With respect I already said that. This is why first doses aren't being offered to under 40s now. Risk of VITT is lower after second dose, based on what data they seem to have available.

For me, the vaccine is clearly preferable, so it's an easy decision.

But statistically, you're more likely to have a worse outcome from covid than you are likely to get a VITT after the AZ vaccine, even if you are lower risk than I am. You having a very mild case of covid doesn't mean that would be the case for someone else, even if they were the same age etc.

Endofether · 03/06/2021 15:25

@TortoiseShed I didn’t know they weren’t offering first dose to under 40s? Of anything or just AZ?

Yeah totally agree - individual decision x

Etulosba · 03/06/2021 16:08

exactly what it says ?

So, 50% effective at preventing death? Infection? Hospitalisation?

What exactly?
