2nd AZ vaccine guidance likely to change?

89 replies

TulipVictory · 26/05/2021 12:02

My second AZ vaccine is due tomorrow and I'm in two minds whether to cancel 😒

Does anyone think the guidelines will likely change soon in regard to having a different vaccine for second or AZ being banned altogether ?

If this is the case I'd rather cancel & wait.

[quote SpeckleDust]Another report on the risk of blood clots comparing every day risk vs Covid risk vs vaccine risk (link to original research paper at end of article)

Wow, so 100 times greater risk of clotting from COVID than from the jab. Puts things into perspective, doesn’t it.

PixieDust28 · 27/05/2021 11:59

I had my second last Saturday on the 12th week. Just go and have your jab.

PixieDust28 · 27/05/2021 12:00

The nurse who done my jab said that it was more risky mixing the vaccinations then just carrying on with the second AZ. Not sure if she meant symptom wise though.

IsabellesMissingSock · 27/05/2021 12:02

I'm 40 and earlier this week I got a text to invite me to a Pfizer jab. It specifically mentioned Pfizer. I've already had my first jab (Pfizer, about a week ago) but I did wonder why, as a 40 year old (almost 41) I was being invited for that specific jab. Not that this is necessarily indicative of anything at all but I thought it interesting

AlmostSummer21 · 27/05/2021 12:06

@Ypsilanti

I also think AZ will be withdrawn
No it won't.

The risk of clots is very very low. Very low. We have medicines in use, taken daily by millions, with a FAR higher risk factor

The risk factor for everyone, of every age, is actually perfectly acceptable and would not have been made such a bloody fuss of if it hadn't been made so by politicing EU members.

AZ is the only 'at cost' vaccine the world has- its needed

If you won't take the vaccine due to the clot risk factor, you need to look at the risk factors of any medicine you take, even OTC like paracetamol. And consider the much higher risk of Covid/long Covid AND the medicines used if you do get it.

AND consider others who cannot get the vaccines or for whom they're not terribly effective.

Don't read too much into it. People keep checking that's what they're getting so it's just easier to tell people.
landofgiants · 27/05/2021 12:07

I don't think that the advice will change soon, but I expect it will change eventually. The studies on vaccine mixing have been showing increased side-effects with mixed doses compared with 2 doses of the same vaccine (I assume they mean flu-type symptoms rather than serious side effects). Attend the appointment and discuss with the staff there.

BestOption · 27/05/2021 12:12

@Chillychangchoo

Oh well I’ll chance it. I’m 32, no risk factors. Happy not to have the second. I don’t feel comfortable because my 41 year old friend had a lung blood clot after her second AZ. So for me the risk seems very real due to me knowing her.
Lung blood clots are NOT the ones that are occurring in tiny numbers after AZ vaccinations.

Look up the video by the thrombosis society.

IsabellesMissingSock · 27/05/2021 12:12

@AlmostSummer21 good point! I just thought it interesting I was being offered it as an over 40. But yeah it's probably nothing (plus a pointless text as I've had my first already anyway!)

Stickytreacle · 27/05/2021 12:16

My daughter is 32 and just had her second AZ vaccine. I'd far rather she had the vacine with its tiny risk than the much bigger risk from covid.

murbblurb · 27/05/2021 12:18

Better not go to the appointment by car - much bigger chance of dying in a road crash than of a blood clot from the vaccine.

@TulipVictory
how did you get on with the second jab? Mine is the day before our long awaited trip to cornwalll :(

TulipVictory · 28/05/2021 10:35

@ICanSmellSummerComing I chickened out 😬

Cherrycee · 28/05/2021 10:42

I'd far rather she had the vacine with its tiny risk than the much bigger risk from covid.

The risk from covid isn't bigger for a 32 year old though. That's precisely why the under 40s are now being offered a different vaccine.

The people who are so adamant that concerns about AZ are invalid are clearly not familiar with the latest data.

LizziesTwin · 28/05/2021 10:44

I met someone yesterday whose wife was very ill with Covid last year - 92 days in hospital. No pre-existing conditions and 53 when she got it. She still can’t get dressed by herself. Why take the risk?

ICanSmellSummerComing · 28/05/2021 10:48

Oh no, Tulip, its awful isnt it, to be put in this position I do not know what to do now

ICanSmellSummerComing · 28/05/2021 10:48

It seems like total pot luck as to who gets the clots.

TulipVictory · 28/05/2021 11:05

@ICanSmellSummerComing to be honest the figures keep going up and that's just the VITT that's been reported without regular clots. I have been toying with what to do for the last two weeks. For me, today I have decided against my second dose and I will stand by it now.

OP posts:
ICanSmellSummerComing · 28/05/2021 11:15

Can you tell me what the latest figs are. I do not know hat VITT means can you put into context for me?

I am sure I had covid last march when it al started as I felt overwhelming tired and lost my sense of S and T. It was very mild, and then I had my first jab and was bad hangover unwell for two days but nothing too bad.

I have started to get paranoid about every health issue esp over winter, I do not know what to do will sitting in a car for over 5 hours increase my likely hood of a clot!! And - then if I do become unwell - doesn't cornwall only have one hospital?

TulipVictory · 28/05/2021 11:47

@ICanSmellSummerComing AZ has been found to be causing a particular kind of immune reaction that causes clots in the brain sinuses but at the same time thrombocytopenia (thin blood). It's quite a dangerous combination but is normally rare in every day life, however, the number of incidences since AZ vaccination is concerning. It's only the JCVI (official website) I will get you the link. It shows you cases of this specific kind of clot this is without all the reactions with other kinds of clots too.

Thank you Flowers

ICanSmellSummerComing · 28/05/2021 11:50

I am in the 63 reports - 8 deaths group

ICanSmellSummerComing · 28/05/2021 11:53

I did read that Germany know why its happening and said the vaccine can be tweaked to stop it....

JulietBravo999 · 28/05/2021 12:12

Me too. 63 reports out of how many jabs though? One statistic is meaningless without the other.

I will be having my second dose soon and can’t wait. Feeling immensely grateful in light of rising cases of IV, which I think is going to cause big problems among the unvaccinated in the next few weeks.
