2nd AZ vaccine guidance likely to change?

TulipVictory · 26/05/2021 12:02

My second AZ vaccine is due tomorrow and I'm in two minds whether to cancel 😒

Does anyone think the guidelines will likely change soon in regard to having a different vaccine for second or AZ being banned altogether ?

If this is the case I'd rather cancel & wait.

I had my second AZ jab last Friday. I'm under 40.

For those that are worried about the AZ second jab - have you ever been on the pill? Travelled on an aeroplane? Driven a car? Taken drugs? The risk of a fatal blood clot after the second dose is negligible. Your risk of getting a blood clot is higher if you're on the pill or travel by air yet I don't see everyone rushing to abandon their contraception or never going on holiday by plane.

Yes, it might happen that you're one of the unlucky ones. Or equally, you might get hit by a lorry on the way to get the vaccine. Stop worrying and just have the second dose.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 26/05/2021 18:40

Why on earth would it be banned? I sincerely hope it isn't as I want my second dose as soon as possible.

You’ll be fine, Tulip, you’ve already had the first with no complications.

With cases and hospitalisation rising you are definitely better off getting the course completed. What time is your appointment? Sending a hand hold.

TulipVictory · 27/05/2021 10:32

@JulietBravo999 it was 11:10 and I cancelled it in a panic 😒 there are two slots available this afternoon but I'm really on the fence and don't know what to do. It's 12 weeks since my first dose yesterday 😫

There's a lot of false and sensationalised info out there about the AZ vaccine and it sounds like you are getting yourself into a bit of a state about it.

The truth is, as others have said, it is no worse than the other vaccines. There is no more risk to having this jab than there is to the plethora of other things you do every day.

Get your second dose and stop panicking. You will be absolutely fine.

BobbinThreadbare123 · 27/05/2021 10:39

I've had both my AZ jabs. I'm under 40. I was offered AZ because of having Crohn's disease and hence a compromised immune system thanks to all my meds. I am a scientist myself, so I looked at all the papers/data and have followed the 'blood clot' thing. I don't have any concerns and haven't had any problems beyond the expected side effects (lasted a bit longer on me due to the chronic illness). The figures I've seen suggest 1 in 250k blood clot from the AZ vaccine and 5-12 in 10k for the pill. Doesn't take a scientist to work out which risk is lower.

I’m 32 and not having my second AZ jab.

They’ll probably do boosters in the autumn so I’ll hang around for that now.

Just go this afternoon, otherwise there was not a lot of point in having your first and you might have to wait a while for an alternative. You know you’re more at risk of catching covid if you don’t and risks after second jab are tiny.

I’ll be with you in spirit. Please go Flowers.

Boosters are just scheduled for the over 50’s and the vulnerable, aren’t they?
starbrightstarlight8888 · 27/05/2021 10:45

I'm in my 30s and had my second AZ vaccine yesterday for which I am very grateful.

what will be different in the autumn?! other than you'll have less protection as you wont have had your second dose Confused
oneglassandpuzzled · 27/05/2021 10:50

I'm just off to have my second AZ jab now. Most of my friends have had their second dose now, too. Nobody has had more than mild side-effects.

With the IV variant around I am very glad my second jab was brought forward a few weeks.

Chillychangchoo · 27/05/2021 10:51

Oh well I’ll chance it. I’m 32, no risk factors. Happy not to have the second. I don’t feel comfortable because my 41 year old friend had a lung blood clot after her second AZ. So for me the risk seems very real due to me knowing her.

Chillychangchoo · 27/05/2021 10:51

Oh, she did survive! But still....
No thanks.

Chillychangchoo · 27/05/2021 10:59

Sorry for repeated posts I’m in a rush and in the middle of something. Obviously me personally knowing someone who had a blood clot for her second vaccine has given me the creeps! Well aware it sounds like a “my friends, friends mums sisters aunties dog story” on mumsnet, but hey Ho for me it’s true.

I’m on the contraceptive implant and I accept the blood clot risk, but this implant continuously provides me with a benefit to my life. Obviously not getting pregnant is a perk!

Second AZ vaccine is unlikely to provide me with a benefit in life. At 32 with no risk factors the likelihood is I’m going to survive covid. It is what it is, risk factors in everything and I’m well aware I’ve been personally influenced by my friends experience. I was happy to just crack on and have the vaccine before all this broke out but now I’ve decided not too.

Rainbowsandstorms · 27/05/2021 11:03

@Chillychangchoo I’m also in my 30s and weighing up the second dose, I’m not due mine for another few weeks though I’ve cancelled the appointment I had booked while I weigh it all up and watch what happens. How long after her second dose did your friend get the clot and was it confirmed to be linked to the vaccination? I hope she’s doing ok.

While you are perfectly entitled to choose whether or not to have your second vaccine, I think you have a skewed assessment of risk skewed.

The risk of getting a blood clot from catching covid is far higher than getting a blood clot from the vaccine. After only one dose, you are still susceptible (particularly to the Indian variant which seems to be becoming the dominant form in many places now).

Chillychangchoo · 27/05/2021 11:10

@Rainbowsandstorms

It was 8 days post AZ second vaccine. Usually very healthy. Might have happened anyway? However she was told the likelihood was it was her second vaccine. She’s okay now and at home, just a little breathless. I guess everybody just has to weigh it up for themselves.

Chillychangchoo · 27/05/2021 11:11

@SpeckleDust

Thanks I’ll read that.

BobbinThreadbare123 · 27/05/2021 11:15

The benefit isn't just for the receiver of the vaccine, either...

JulietBravo999 · 27/05/2021 11:16

I know a couple of women with long covid and both say they wouldn’t wish it on their worst enemy.

It’s not just about surviving the initial infection, it’s the risk of debilitating illness for months afterwards. One has had 5 months off work so far, the other has been told her lungs are scarred from it and she’ll probably never run distances again. She was at the peak of fitness and now feels like a pensioner.

Each to their own but the fact remains that the more people who are fully vaccinated, the greater the good for society. I’m sure those who decide against being protected will do their utmost to protect others by continuing to wear masks and social distance.

Chillychangchoo · 27/05/2021 11:20

@BobbinThreadbare123

Yes I know. But still, I’d rather not pop my clogs just for the greater good just yet thanks.

Rainbowsandstorms · 27/05/2021 11:26

@Chillychangchoo thanks for your reply. I’m glad she’s doing ok. I’m waiting for a bit more data before making a decision but feel really concerned about the clotting issues in younger people who aren’t at so much risk from covid. That’s not to say I’m not worried about covid. I desperately want to be fully vaccinated but feel the risk of the second dose is possibly higher than my risk from covid.
