Yet more chat about novavax, (un)blinding, general vaccine passport stress, approval (please please please) and more.
Those involved in other vaccine trials also welcome.

@JosephineDeBeauharnais
Javid mentioned returning from amber countries without isolation for U.K. double jabbed. The domestic letter should cover this. Total waste if it doesn’t.
So much mentioned since yesterday discriminates between double jabbed and not vaccinated that we really need to BE HEARD.

andadietcoke · 06/07/2021 15:25

That's good @QueenOfThorns

I've been pinged by the app today so that's me out of vaccination until after the cruise so at least that's a break from agonising over it.

Frazzled2207 · 06/07/2021 15:32

@andadietcoke
oh no! But at least by being pinged now that should be less likely to be pinged just before the cruise.

IMO the letter should be fine for both getting out of isolation if close contact and quarantine.
I asked NIHR about this (a while ago) and they said

"Yes, the aim is to ensure that trial participants can benefit from all such exemptions, and the UK Government has already committed to that."

However we will need some kind of complete clarity as I totally expect that the numpty at test and trace who calls us to check up on us will not have a clue.

We certainly will - when I got called by someone from NHSE asking why I hadn’t been vaxd and would I be willing to explain my reasons, I explained about the trial and he said “I’ve never heard of that” Hmm

People who've now had a recognised vaccine- how was it? Any side effects?

Well, if I was playing Moderna side effects bingo, I’d have won the grand prize by now! I seem to have the vast majority of the more common side effects - sore arm, muscle aches, headache, chills, tiredness (although that might be because it’s hard to sleep with a sore arm).

Paracetamol is being very effective at making me feel better, though, and I’m hoping it won’t last too long. I’m very glad I didn’t wait until the end of the week to get jabbed, as we’re off on holiday on Saturday!

Frazzled2207 · 07/07/2021 11:05

I’m booked in for Moderna on Friday so thanks for this. Could you function ok with paracetamol @QueenOfThorns ?
Luckily I have a fairly quiet weekend and husband is around to deal with kids if necessary

Yes, I’m doing great on the paracetamol, but I’m trying to save them for when I really need to function (got to take the cats to the vets for their annual jabs this afternoon - very bad planning!), so I’ve gone a bit shaky again now.

What’s interesting is that it came on pretty quickly - I had my jab just after 11 in the morning yesterday, and was feeling rough by early evening - but doesn’t seem to have got any worse today. So I’m optimistic that it’ll get better from here, and fingers crossed that I’ll feel well enough to watch the football tonight!

Level75 · 07/07/2021 15:26

I'm regretting handing the letter which was given to DH explaining he was part of a trial to our GP. Is this going to feed some info into the system which they will cross check if he tries to book a new vaccine?

Level75 · 07/07/2021 15:27

So has anyone had their status (for events) show up in the NHS app and subsequently booked a vaccine?

gazzaconns · 07/07/2021 17:05

That’s it, first real Jab booked for Saturday, I will consider it an early booster. Who would have thought I’d of got more information from Mumsnet than anywhere else? Thanks guys and good luck.

Frazzled2207 · 07/07/2021 17:22

Finally been unblinded. Had it in October. Which makes it an easier decision about having Moderna, probably on Friday.

I won't be in a big rush about the second dose, especially if novavax gets approved in the meantime which is possible.

Dr Baxter says Novavax is 'hopeful' about approval in august/ september, but seems to be taking this with a pinch of salt. He thinks by the end of the year is very likely, but gets my point that even if it gets approved in the UK that doesn't necessarily help if we need to travel and other countries don't accept. He totally gets our frustration . He couldn't recommend that I have another vaccine (as expected) but didn't think it was an unreasonable course of action given the circumstance

He seemed to think that there would have to be some kind of booster provision this autumn for those that had novavax last autumn at least. It may well be that it ends up being recommended that we had a dose of x vaccine. But there is definitely no agreed plan there yet.

He also said that he expects the app to be working for all stockport trial people by the end of July and probably sooner.

Finally, he thinks it's very likely that if we go for additional vaccines that we will get worse side effects than we would do normally.

I feel cheated by all this. We willingly gave up time and potentially exposed ourselves to an untested drug for the good of other people and the consequence of that is that we're actually disadvantaged.

I get that it's not that simple ... but it's really not good enough.

I agree. The site doc doesn't quite see it that way as he thinks the government is doing all it can for it to be recognised in the UK and there is every indication that will be all fine within a few weeks (and not really needed before then anyway).

he also thinks nobody should be travelling abroad in a pandemic. I can see that pov even if I don't necessarily agree with it. Some people will need to visit husbands/wives etc or need it for important work purposes. So it's not just about going on holiday is it. I'm unlikely to travel abroad this year tbh. But I'm irked by the fact that I have less rights than my husband.

Ha... the government doing all it can is a joke if ever I heard one!

Well exactly that’s not the point is it? It doesn’t matter what we’re trying to do or how reasonable it is, it’s perfectly legal to travel abroad and we shouldn’t be disadvantaged in any way. As far as I’m concerned having had to fork out £150 for a Fit to Fly PCR test to a green destination, I’m effectively subsidising Novavax and the lady I spoke to yesterday at NIHR agreed with me.
On that point, she did say that they’re asking Novavax to consider compensation/ reimbursement for people who find themselves out of pocket as a result of this.

Frazzled2207 · 07/07/2021 18:57

That is good that they are asking novavax about reimbursing people. I don’t think it’s the responsibility of the British taxpayer in any way.
But that doesn’t help the people who’ve basically had to cancel their plans completely.

OP posts:
KeepingOnKeepingUp · 07/07/2021 19:04

No, it doesn’t, frazzled. I’ve just cancelled our much wanted holiday to France, in part because of this. I won’t be out of pocket but I am cross and frustrated that this is the outcome, when the only reason anyone can travel is because of people volunteering on vaccine trials.

Frazzled2207 · 07/07/2021 19:32

Sorry to hear that @KeepingOnKeepingUp

I had AZ about 3 weeks ago. 24 hours afterwards I felt quite rough - like a hangover. That went away after about another 24 hours. Then I developed a red, hot, itchy rash all over my upper arm. That lasted a few days and then faded. It was quite alarming to look at, but uncomfortable rather than sore.
BG2015 · 07/07/2021 19:50

I've actually booked an NHS vaccine for Sunday and the second one 5th Sept.

Lots of people in the middle of chemo have had vaccines (I've read about it on the Macmillan community pages)

If I can go on holiday sometime in the future, even if it's after Christmas I want the same rights as everyone else and Novavax haven't given me that. So I'm going for it!

I don't know my treatment plan yet but I'm done with Novavax. I won't be going to the follow up apt in November either.

MrsHamlet · 07/07/2021 19:54

My friend who is having chemo had vaccine one after round one and vaccine two between rounds three and four I think.
Hope you're doing okay x
