Second AZ Vaccine

rhowton · 17/05/2021 13:03

Under 35 and having my second AZ tomorrow. I felt absolutely fine with my first, no side effects, and played netball in the evening.

Does anyone know if the chances of having the blood clots go down for the second vaccine if you didn't have one with the first. Or is it the same chance regardless of whether it is your first or second.

Before anyone tells me to do my own research, I really have tried to find information but I cannot find any data.

I'm not worried about the clots and I'm still happily going tomorrow.

Thanks @TinyTear . I'm hoping, and assuming I will be fine.

So far there have been 8 cases after second doses as of 5th May. The government releases a summary of the yellow card report each Thursday which can be found here www.gov.uk/government/publications/coronavirus-covid-19-vaccine-adverse-reactions/coronavirus-vaccine-summary-of-yellow-card-reporting

The general consensus among experts seems to be that it’s less likely after the second dose but this has changed from no risk. I think the honest answer is that it’s too early to know at present, as they only started second doses fairly recently and many of these will initially be in older people, where the risk appears to be lower alongside younger HCPs. There’s not yet been any data released regarding the ages of the people who have suffered clots after their second doses. I hope that helps.

I think the risk of clots with a second AZ dose is miniscule - far less that even the tiny risk with the first dose.

I have an auto immune disease (including a blood clotting disorder) and react to everything, but had far fewer side effects from my second dose.

And today I got the happy news that I have made antibodies to covid 19 with a test taken 10 weeks after my first dose. It's hard to describe how relieved and happy that has made me feel.

I was told the risk of clots is tiny after the first and even more tiny after the 2nd (so you're right not to be worried about that). I was poorly for 24 hours after the first but only had a bit of a sore arm after my second. I haven't got the link but there has been a study into side effects after each one and they're generally less after the second AZ one. DH also had the AZ one and no side effects after either.

Several of my friends had the second one this weekend and none had side effects.

It’s 8 out of 7.5 million so far. Very low risk.

Ninefeettall · 17/05/2021 14:20

The honest answer is that the risk after a second dose of AZ is unknown. We don’t have the data yet. Frankly, you are the data!

Were you trying to be helpful or reassuring there? Because I think you may have failed! Hmm

OP, as others have said, the risks are absolutely miniscule. Unless you have any reason to think you may be at more risk, you should feel perfectly safe to just go ahead and have it.

You will be fine and there a much higher risk of developing a blood clot if you catch Covid.

I'm in the same situation op! No advice but I feel the same. Was fine after the first and due to the second tonight. So nervous!

rhowton · 17/05/2021 19:46

Thanks @Ninefeettall 😂 I don't mind being the test subject, just doing my bit.

I managed to bring my appointment forward by 4 weeks as I wasn't due until 15th June so I'm pleased by that.

Thanks for all your information and encouragement. Fingers crossed for tomorrow.
