Too late. That's not happening thankfully.
@Myalternate The journalists were briefed he would be there, which was why some were surprised when he wasn't
That's odd because the announcement only mentioned Chris Whitty.

Boris Johnson will hold a Downing Street Covid press conference at 5pm on Friday, No.10 has announced
The prime minister will be joined by chief medical adviser Chris Whitty

Lostinacloud · 14/05/2021 19:13

If they want to move on then they can. Past variants have come and gone before the vaccine so surely the planned opening can continue regardless

@Franklin12

Maybe we need to think about different restrictions for the unvaccinated. I heard someone in the outside cafe I was in today saying that if they wanted to go abroad they would take the vaccine but not until then.

Shame on them. I am sick of people just thinking of themselves and spreading this virus around.

They have to wait until all age groups had been offered it before even trying that. I would be fuming if I had different restrictions simply because I am not in the age bracket for the vaccine yet.

Covid may not and in all probability will not disappear. It will mutate as it is and stick around most likely just like Spanish flu did. It's still around today in regular flu strains, this is the hope for Covid. At some point restrictions have to start easing, the U.K. is in a good place for the NHS and the vaccination drive. It can't continue to be 'another 2 weeks' or it'll never end.

IloveJKRowling · 14/05/2021 19:17
@IloveJKRowling because we can’t keep locking down every time a new variant crops up on the off chance it might be more dangerous.
I didn't say we should lock down, I said maybe secondary school children IN SCHOOL AS NORMAL should wear masks a bit longer.

I'm anti lockdown which is why I'm pro masks and just being a bit careful about all meeting up indoors.

We can argue about it until the cows come home but the virus will do what it does - which is spread indoors where there are no mitigations. If we start having lots of indoor crowded places without any mitigations it will spread, fast. If initial data is to be believed, the India variant spreads even faster than the Kent one.

But social distancing and masks will continue to work, presumably. So I'd rather just keep those going so we can get on with our lives. No, not quite as normal but far better than lockdown.

Yes but the first step on the propaganda train to ready us all to accept further restrictions and not the total easing and overseas travel promised has been firmly taken today

They don’t know. It could go either way

But it’s not because they want restrictions to stay

Blossomtoes · 14/05/2021 19:22

@Alonim

The fact that they haven't released that info tells you it's not good news.

If the people who died from B1617.2 were unvaccinated they would say so. It would boost take up.

They are panicking because people who’ve been vaccinated have died.

Have they? How do you know? It certainly hasn’t been reported anywhere.
the80sweregreat · 14/05/2021 19:24

Did anyone ask them if the deaths from the Indian variant of those people had been vaccinated or not? ( if that makes sense ?)
I don't recall anyone asking this question or not?

Blondeshavemorefun · 14/05/2021 19:24

@Idontwantarow

I can’t see June happening. Another wedding cancelled 😢😢😢😢
Doesn’t have to be cancelled. Just have 15/30

We will be still go ahead

Triphazard101 · 14/05/2021 19:25

Even though we dont want to get to the stage we were before Christmas and it was idiotic to allow flights in from India without quarantine , we arent in the same position as the previous 2 lockdowns, cases are obviously rising in some areas but overall the cases look fairly plateaued from the last few weeks with low levels of hospitalizations and deaths. This was not the case in october and before xmas when there were 15-20k+ cases a day

And when has Chris Whitty ever looked relaxed and happy? He has a pretty thankless task , and is basically there to break bad news advise caution

picturesandpickles · 14/05/2021 19:25

@blueangel19

Why were people 'allowed' to mix over Christmas when numbers were higher?

We were not allowed to mix at Christmas

Er, yes people were allowed to mix - restrictions were lifted for Christmas Day except in tier 4, with three households allowed to get together www.bbc.co.uk/news/explainers-55056375

I'm anti lockdown which is why I'm pro masks and just being a bit careful about all meeting up indoors me too - we can't fully unlock right now but I don;t want to go backwards so maybe a bit of caution is needed before chucking the simple things like masks out of the window.

Now thats just scaremongering
Staffy1 · 14/05/2021 19:26

@ilovebrie8

As second vaccines are now 8 weeks for over 50s will gp’s contact people if you were done at your gp for the first one? Do we just wait if we are at that limit now...
@ilovebrie8, I would check with your local vaccination centres. I had my first through the GP and had heard nothing from them by 9 weeks, (10 weeks now), but the local centres keep advertising on the local Facebook chat page for anyone who is 8 weeks past their first vaccination to come for their second without an appointment. Even if they don't, go near the end of the day and ask if there are any left over.

I smell BS
Abraxan · 14/05/2021 19:28

Does anyone want to live with covid?

I doubt we have any choice. I can't see it going away. We are unlikely to eradicate covid. We have to learn to live with it

Letsgetreadytocrumble · 14/05/2021 19:28

There is definitely a lot of shit being talked on this thread!

Staffy1 · 14/05/2021 19:28

@ilovebrie8, also, you can book your second through the online booking page. I had done that for 11 weeks after the first, a week before I managed to get an early walk in vaccination, even though the first was booked by the GP.

Abraxan · 14/05/2021 19:30

@espresso14

A return to Tiers rather than complete nationwide lifting? And when I say nation, it seems BJ is only PM of England these days.
Those in the north who have had far more restrictions for far longer would probably disagree with this tbh. Some places have had hardly any release since last March.
Beebityboo · 14/05/2021 19:30

@Alonim, any proof for that claim? Or do you just want to scare people?

Puzzledandpissedoff · 14/05/2021 19:31

Community leaders need to get out fast and help. If people aren’t listening to the government then surely they will listen to their leaders

A lot of community leaders are working hard to help - there's some excellent work being done, though along with the encouraging voices there are still plenty who insist vaccines are haram and a white mans' plot

Interesting, though, to see the increasing focus on asian vaccine refusal. As said before I've been expecting this since the start, and I worry about what it'll do to community relations - especially if that refusal's seen to be a factor in any future restrictions

starsparkle08 · 14/05/2021 19:31

All this is so depressing. I’m glad restrictions will be eased on Monday but it’s always a worry they will be snatched back again.
I respect we all have different opinions on this - this is just mine . Mentally I’m struggling to cope

Totally agree. They have far better and more accurate data than previously and they are monitoring it daily. The sensible response needs to be to act sooner if there is a rise in hospitalisations and deaths (not cases) rather than lockdown 'Just in case' or wait until the NHS is overflowing - the middle ground is the best answer imo
