Hurray!
I am a secondary teacher and just hope it really happens.

@Lemons1571
The magic tape is coming with me on every outing. Cinema...magic tape, supermarket...magic tape, pub...magic tape. When those planes start flying, I’m covering them in magic tape. Covid just won’t dare cross it. My final protection is my staff lanyard. I hold it forth as I shimmy down the packed corridors, safe in the knowledge that Covid will avoid me.

I cannot understand a society which fails to protect teachers. I'm not a teacher.

There is something seriously screwed up about politicians, the press and a large number of extremely selfish individuals.

Young people are at risk from the Indian variant which scientists said is spreading.

Mistressinthetulips · 10/05/2021 21:36

Malteser it is not always as simple as you make it out to be. I've had a vaccine, first dose. Male teacher in room next to me is 49, has had one dose - a week ago, so not "covered" by it for another two weeks. And that's at 49, so will be loads of people 40+ unvaccinated.
The idea that no one "younger" is at risk of a serious impact from Covid is rubbish. As the population becomes more and more vaccinated, school staff will continue to be working with the largest groups of unvaccinated people. None of the vaccines is or claim to be 100%.
Many parents also will be 40+ and still currently unvaccinated.

CallmeHendricks · 10/05/2021 21:37

Thank you Waverly.

And if the virus can't do its stuff on the older generation because of the vaccines, who's it going to adapt to, to target?

I'm delighted masks are going

Most people have mild to no symptoms

Any guidelines high risk teachers will be vaccinated by now, unless they have refused

People need to get over their covid excuses

Anyone ever ask about meningitis vaccination?

Workingfromhomeishell · 10/05/2021 21:45

*genuinely

noblegiraffe · 10/05/2021 21:56

Not sure someone who is apparently working from home gets to comment about the working conditions in schools.

CallmeHendricks · 10/05/2021 21:56

"People need to get over their covid excuses"

What "excuses" do you mean?

MrsHamlet · 10/05/2021 22:00

People need to get over their covid excuses

This makes no sense.

CallmeHendricks · 10/05/2021 22:01

@noblegiraffe

I mean, even when actual photos were posted back in the Autumn showing crowded corridors in secondaries, a whole posse of people on here started quibbling and bitching and saying it wasn't like that in their children's schools. You know, the schools that parents weren't allowed to set foot in at the time, in order to have the faintest idea.
mrshoho · 10/05/2021 22:01

Why do you ask about the meningitis vaccination? I don't recall an outbreak of meningitis that caused the NHS to become overwhelmed in any way close to what we dealt with due to covid this past Winter.

noblegiraffe · 10/05/2021 22:02

Maybe they're talking about using covid as an excuse not to hug them. Or see them.

SueSaid · 10/05/2021 22:05

'It is really hard in masks for many people including for me. No one believes me but I am not making it up. May be some of us have a different respiratory system than others'

It is 'really hard in masks' or, rather a bit uncomfortable for many people. Everyone has the same respiratory system however tolerance levels vary.

FrippEnos · 10/05/2021 22:09

Xenia

Its funny that the last line in that article is

"Over the past year we have always put the wellbeing of pupils and staff first, and this step is now the right one," said Mr Williamson.

Which is one of the biggest pieces of political bullshit ever and shows how little this lot actually give a fuck about education.

CallmeHendricks · 10/05/2021 22:12

Well, I've come to expect that if Boris's mouth is moving, then a lie is coming out of it, but that from Gavelar is possibly the one to beat even BoJo.

AlmostSummer21 · 10/05/2021 22:18
@AlmostSummer21 given that I’ve told an anecdote from the school corridor today less than a week since my test the answer to your question seems obvious?
Which post was that?

I was only asking after you, sorry for wondering how you'd got on. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Xenia · 10/05/2021 22:23

Secondary pupils are not best served nor their well being best served in masks.

CallmeHendricks · 10/05/2021 22:29

@Xenia

Secondary pupils are not best served nor their well being best served in masks.
Nor were they (nor anyone else) best served by the absolute shitshow that was going on in schools in December. Huge numbers of children were being sent home every week, and their education massively disrupted. If masks help to limit that, then surely it is preferable, on balance?
noblegiraffe · 10/05/2021 22:30

They weren't best served by the lack of mitigation measures from Sept - Dec that allowed covid to spiral out of control in secondary schools and resulted in them being closed from Jan to March.

I think that was worse for their education than masks, tbh. Astonishing that others think that mitigation measures are the real problem.

Wellbythebloodyhell · 10/05/2021 22:33

@AppleKatie christ that will teach you not to ask about the welfare of a fellow MNetter again Confused

BustopherPonsonbyJones · 10/05/2021 22:35

No one really wants to wear a mask. The fact that I will continue to wear one in my classroom should show you that I genuinely don’t think it is the right time to ditch them yet. As Boris hasn’t cancelled their use elsewhere, it seems fairly clear he thinks they are still necessary too - just not in schools as school staff aren’t worthy of the protection offered to the rest of our society.

Agreed

You'd think they'd at least wait for a bit more data on whether the Indian variant affects children more before getting rid of masks. But no.

AppleKatie · 10/05/2021 22:42

🤷‍♀️Perhaps I misinterpreted the question. But given the bizarrely aggressive tone of a lot of this thread it felt like an accusation of lying.
