Positive test 7 days after Pfizer vaccine

MIL who lives in another country had the AZ a couple of months ago and the Pfizer vaccine last Wednesday. Ever since her second vaccine she has felt off, with a runny nose and feeling tired and run down. She got tested and found out that she Covid. How can this be?

Has she been mixing at all? She probably caught it (not linked to the vaccine)

The vaccines help prevent serious illness and death but it can be possible to still get covid.

Because she only had the second vaccine 7 days ago- the protection is cumulative. She likely caught the virus around the time of having the second vaccine so would not have had any protection from that yet and is only a certain % protected after the first (that's why we need 2) Hopefully the fact she had one vaccine lessens her chances of severe symptoms or being hospitalised.

Why did she get 2 different vaccinations? I thought they were meant to get the same as first dose?

She works as a HCP but has had limited contact outside of her job. At work, they wear masks and take the usual precautions. I didn't know that you can still get Covid so easily. It's just odd to me. I've had my first AZ and was looking forward to dropping my guard in the coming weeks, not so sure now. For example, I was planning to travel to London to join some work meetings but now I wonder if I should wait until 2 weeks after my 2nd dose.

I'm worried about MIL but reassure that the vaccines reduce the illness. Is there any research on severity of covid with one/two doses of any vaccine?

No one said they're 100% She didn't catch it from the vaccine if that's what you're getting at. Why did she get 2 different vaccinations? I thought they were meant to get the same as first dose?

We're not meant to be dropping our guard, have you not heard Chris Whitty et al saying we still need to keep up with the guidelines. Everyone knows that no vaccine is 100% effective, of course vaccinated people will still catch covid but statistically they will be less ill and less likely to transmit the virus.

Is you work not sticking to covid rules? People are going into work everyday with only 1 or no vaccinations and case numbers are very low.

thank god, sorry but I needed to ask, you see some crazy ideas on the internet. I didn't realise they had started mixing vaccines, I won't be getting mine for a while and will just take whatever I'm given.

I'm sure I read on other threads that in England you aren't allowed to have two different vaccines. I've seen it asked a few time by under 30s who are concerned about having a 2nd AZ dose

I thought I had read that the vaccine could give you a positive test result? So not that you'd caught it from the vaccine, but it would prompt an immune response which would show up on a test. I'll try and find a link. Is that not right?

Ignore me, I'm thinking of antibody tests!
