Pfizer shortage

MintyCedric · 04/05/2021 13:52

I'm in the South East of England and just had an invitation for my second Pfizer jab next week...10 weeks after my first.

The text states:

We advise you to book for next week as we do not have any more scheduled Pfizer deliveries after then.

Has anyone else received similar or heard about a shortage.

I've Googled and the only news articles I can find are Boris et al assuring us back in late March/early April that there wouldn't be any issues Hmm!

How does that indicate a shortage? It just means that your areas hasn’t been allocated more Pfizer.

Theforest · 04/05/2021 14:03

Probably because they are being reserved for under 30s.

LemonTT · 04/05/2021 15:45

The hub will be given a weekly supply of Pfizer based on the number of people due at 11-12 weeks. They cannot store it and so use it all up when they receive it.

It so happens that after this week the number of people due Pfizer 2nd doses is very low. Because there were no corresponding 1st doses of Pfizer 11 -12 weeks ago.

They are not going to order in a box especially for you if you don’t bother coming in when you are due. It cannot be stored until you get your act together.

There is no pFizer shortage. Second doses are protected and distributed when people are due.

Bells3032 · 04/05/2021 15:47

^ this as @LemonTT says. doesn't sound like there's a shortage. sounds like they're only doing clinics when needed and there won't be another clinic as not needed

MintyCedric · 04/05/2021 15:52

Yep...point taken...the way it was worded struck me as quite final but I see what you mean.

My head was a bit elsewhere at the time tbh!

There’s talk of them banning AZ in under 40s so they may well need more Pfizer than they thought.

Rillington · 04/05/2021 16:01

There's been a shortage in my area. My DC had to wait 4 weeks for theirs. The PCN had to order them specially from NHS England as they were only being sent enough for second doses.

I think the 'talk' is on Mnet only. It does however make sense to prioritise existing stocks of Moderna and Pfizer for the younger people for which AZ might not be recommended.

It was well publicised that there was a bit of an interruption in April - known about and planned round.

Unless medical priority and cannot receive other jabs, you're unlikely to get a Pfizer first shot in many areas. Supply should be evening out though.

Second jabs should be fine, but yes you need to book within the window when the centre knows it will have it, as it can only be kept for a very short time once thawed.

Caselgarcia · 04/05/2021 16:31

I've just booked my second Pfizer jab for a fortnight's time.

Mindymomo · 04/05/2021 16:37

My DH had his second last week, he was only given the one date at the same vaccine centre to have it. It was exactly 10 weeks after his first.

idontlikealdi · 04/05/2021 16:40

Your title is inflammatory

Dementedswan · 04/05/2021 16:42

Dh has his second Pfizer jab tomorrow at our local gp hub. They are also doing first jabs alongside and those are AZ. His is 11 weeks apart. Seems they have all been carefully planned here as everyone else who had 1st jab same day as dh all have 2nd jab apps tomorrow.

I had AZ a couple of weeks after dh, gp will be in touch soon to arrange my second.

Frazzled2207 · 04/05/2021 16:53

agree your title is misleading. Your centre has limited supplies left and wants to make sure that everyone waiting for a 2nd dose gets it. It doesn't follow that thre is a general shortage.

Agreed IMO the OP made a genuine mistake of writing something different to what they mean, IMO, what they ar saying or should have been saying is that the place they get the jabs from, no new date for next delivery but, the big but is and should have been is they will get more but no firm date.

There will be supply problems with AZ and pifzer but it is managed awell atm

Ballstothis1 · 04/05/2021 17:16

Also in SE. DS (26) had his first Pfizer a week ago, so doubt he would have got if they needed to prioritise 2nd jabs.

MintyCedric · 04/05/2021 17:29

@Emma2021

Precisely...brain fart central on my part...meant to stick a question make on the end at least but was multitasking...if MN want to tweak it, feel free!

Had no intention of catastrophising and just wondered if other areas were experiencing the same.

FWIW I'm totally in favour in the Pfizer and Moderna jabs being ring fenced for younger recipients.

We had a shortage, or an issue at least in our area. I'm getting my 2nd pfizer tomorrow, which will be 13 weeks since my 1st. Just hope that as I will have gone past 12 weeks there's no issue with efficacy.
