As of Friday 30th April

34.3m first jabs
14.9m second jabs

have been given in the UK. This means that 65% of all adults have some level of protection and 28% are fully vaccinated.

Additionally evidence is currently suggesting that the vaccines are effective against the Brazilian and Indian variants 🥳

Vaccinations are now opening to all over-25s.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 07/06/2021 18:59

@TruelyStruttingHotpants

Out of 12,383 Delta variant cases in UK till June 3rd:
  • 464 people went to emergency care
  • 126 admitted to hospital
  • 83 were unvaccinated
  • 28 had one jab
  • Just 3 both doses
What about the other twelve who were admitted to hospital? 83+28+3=114
TruelyStruttingHotpants · 07/06/2021 19:02

Apparently no one knows Grin

Maybe they forgot to ask then?

They were unconscious?

Lack of English language?

Dead?

PuzzledObserver · 07/06/2021 21:06

In very, very, very round numbers, there are 10 million adults yet to have a first dose and 22 million yet to have a second (including the ones yet to have a first.)

32 million jabs to do... if Hugo pulled his finger out, could be done in six weeks. What do you reckon?

WaverleyPirate · 07/06/2021 21:24

What's the average of first jabs per day? How long will it take to finish the 25-29 year olds and move onto the last group?

Id say around 450-500k day.
EasterIssland · 07/06/2021 21:29

32m at an average of 500k/day it’s 64 days. However , those that get their first at the end of the month would have their end of august /September depending whether it’s 8 or 12 weeks gap between doses

TruelyStruttingHotpants · 07/06/2021 21:55

So the question is will they shorter the gap once the overwhelming majority of second jabs are Pfizer and Moderna?

It makes perfect sense for the youngsters to get a shorter gap. So long as supply is there of course.

In Spain for example they are doing 3 and 4 weeks respectively between these two vaccines

Over 18s aren't the last group though - Pfizer is now approved for teenagers.
WaverleyPirate · 07/06/2021 22:21

Thanks Easter. Isn't the 400/500k for first and second jabs combined?

I was wondering roughly what the proportion of first jabs a day might be for the next couple of weeks.

WaverleyPirate · 07/06/2021 22:22

I knew they were thinking about teenager vaccines. I didn't realise they were progressing straight onto that group too.

TruelyStruttingHotpants · 07/06/2021 22:28

If we are going down the route of vaccinating the teenagers then murmurs are of it being in August/September. Ready for the new school year.

That would also support shortening the gap for 18 to 29 year olds. Get them out the way before you hit the teenagers. Who also have a shorter gap.

Then October onwards is boosters for the elderly and vulnerable.

PuzzledObserver · 07/06/2021 22:43

There have been days when they’ve done over 700K total per day. The human resources exist - it’s about getting the vaccines, and getting the people in. The turnout at walk-in clinics for younger adults suggest there’s no problem (yet) with people coming forward.

Here’s something to give you hope: new cases in Israel have been consistently under 100 per day for the past two months. They show no sign of rising again, even though they have basically scrapped all restrictions.

Israel’s vaccination rates currently: 63% 1st dose, 59% 2nd doses
UK: 60% 1st doses, 41.5% 2nd doses.

(That’s % of population, not adults)

2 months ago, when Israel’s infection rate reached its current low level, their vaccination rates were 61% and 52%.

We are so close. Keep your nerve, keep on jabbing, we will soon be there.

Bordois · 07/06/2021 22:49

Did Israel not have a slight bump upwards when they first released restrictions which then started to decline again?

Whatever9999 · 08/06/2021 06:29

Well the fact that there was a queue to get on the booking site before 6am this morning is heartening. Means take up for the 25-30 year old is likely to be pretty high.

You may be right… there was definitely an uptick when they started vaccinating, because people were going straight out and mixing before there had been time for their immune systems to work.

Today’s newspaper headlines are confusing.

The Times: Lockdown easing to be delayed at least 2 weeks
The i: Vaccines winning the variant battle

Bordois · 08/06/2021 08:25

Doesn't Hugo write for the i? 😆

TruelyStruttingHotpants · 08/06/2021 09:49

Yep😂

Two extra weeks is obviously a blow for some businesses etc. However I can't see that as much to worry about. It will be whatever it will be🤷‍♀️

One of my adult boys is desperate for his as works with the general public. He is trying to get it booked fast now allowed

Other adult son I have no idea if he will get it. He is very relaxed about the whole thing. Unlike the other son he worked all the way through the pandemic and has had covid himself. I think he will end up having it just to keep younger siblings and us old folk from risk. However he is in no rush. I won't push as that would just make him go the other way.

It's good that vaccine take up is continuing with the younger age groups. I was worried that the balance of risk v reward would mean take up would plummet with younger people deciding not to be done. It's an important group because of the sociability of that age group
AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 08/06/2021 10:59

I like to think that perhaps younger people care about their grandparents and their parents and their parents' friends, and people who are unable to have the vaccination, not catching it. If the message that being vaccinated makes you less likely to spread covid has got through, that can only be a good thing.

This 100%! We were at twickenjam 18+ wit so many other young people. I don’t think I saw more than a couple 30+. The vast majority were 25 and under wen we were there. Most people our age are following a variety of news sources and understand the need to protect others and a huge desire to get back to normal life I.e. bars theatres festivals concerts and travel. Those of us lucky enough with grandparents are desperate to spend time with them after a year apart.
PuzzledObserver · 08/06/2021 16:31

It seems to me that the figures show pretty strongly that:

  1. Vaccines work very well against the virus, INCLUDING the Delta variant;

  2. Lockdowns/social distancing also work, but they have to be really stringent to do so - and that is massively damaging in so many ways. Half hearted measures don't work.

I'm confident that if we keep on vaccinating, that the third wave would eventually be brought under control even if we do open up further on 21st. However, it will be brought under control quicker - and with fewer serious cases and deaths - if we wait a bit longer.

I don't know about you, but the April and May relaxations have brought back most of what I have missed. I have seen family. I have been in a coffee shop. I'm going to a live concert tomorrow. Granted, the numbers are limited and the masks are a pain. But it is so much better now than it was even a couple of months ago.

What's left to add.... unlimited numbers (which I care about for my nephew's wedding in August and future concerts) and overseas travel. I can wait.
