As of Friday 30th April

34.3m first jabs
14.9m second jabs

have been given in the UK. This means that 65% of all adults have some level of protection and 28% are fully vaccinated.

Additionally evidence is currently suggesting that the vaccines are effective against the Brazilian and Indian variants 🥳

4 million doses in 7 days!

Wowzer!

I can’t stop staring at the blocky chart - can’t believe how far we’ve come!

TruelyStruttingHotpants · 25/05/2021 19:38

How well vaccines are working in America from Chise.

www.cdc.gov/vaccines/covid-19/health-departments/breakthrough-cases.html

Latest data on breakthrough infections out of the CDC:

123,000,000+ fully vaccinated
354 asymptomatic infections (0.0002%)
1,368 COVID-related hospitalizations (0.0011%)
290 COVID-related deaths (0.0002%)

BruceAndNosh · 25/05/2021 20:10

My local area is on 46% on blocky.... Could we hit 50% by Sunday?

Titsywoo · 25/05/2021 20:12

@PuzzledObserver

So, national takeup figures are:

1st dose: 72.5%
2nd dose: 42.1%

And in my local area it's:

1st dose: 67.5% (below national figure)
2nd dose: 42.6% (slightly above national figure)

We certainly seemed to be going great guns early on. I speculate this is because of older-than-average demographic. Which would make sense - I can think of half a dozen retirement living/care complexes within the area. A lot of the housing would not be accessible to first time buyers and young families.

It would be interesting to see this as a breakdown by age - is that data available? I'd look myself but I can never find anything like this!
EasterIssland · 25/05/2021 20:51

@titsywooo you can find it here but only for England in the sex, age tab

🥳🥳🥳🥳

We are going to have over 18s called before the end of June easily ❤

Bordois · 26/05/2021 08:08

Omni calculator are predicting all first jabs to be done by 24th June, and that herd immunity via vaccination will now be 4th September (brought forward by 1 day from 5th!)

101 days!

Just logged on - 1541 in the queue! This makes me so happy! At the start of vaccination many people said the younger cohorts wouldn’t be keen to get vaccinated - we have 1500 largely 29-31 yr olds queuing to book 🥂🎉😍
bumpetybumpbump · 26/05/2021 09:04

I had my first jab on 2nd May and now invited for second and can get an appt next week! Are they closing the gaps between doses? Has anyone had similar? Not sure whether to get it ASAP or book for 12 weeks?

BruceAndNosh · 26/05/2021 09:36

I've just had a text from my GP surgery to say they won't be running a hub for Phase 2 (50s and under). They can go to the central book online hubs. (this is in England)
Similarly the GP hub I volunteer at might only be doing a few more sessions.
I think this makes sense. The GP hubs were always targeting the more vulnerable.
They also take up a lot of time with the actual booking process. Getting people to book their own appointments is much more time efficient.
I also suspect the football club want their space back!

If Pfizer a small gap will be fine. Though there is evidence it works even better with a longer gap. It AZ before 8 weeks isn't really advised. It takes longer for the antibodies to build up. However your circumstances or location may mean you are advised to have it earlier. Else it is a mistake?

How are they going to manage all the elderly boosters if they are closing GP hubs?
TruelyStruttingHotpants · 26/05/2021 09:42

I think you are right Bruce. The smaller GP hubs have done there job. Most elderly of vulnerable are second jabbed now or will be within the next couple of weeks.

This is probably a good sign of things getting back to normal. GPs doing their normal work and small community spaces running social clubs and classes etc.

TruelyStruttingHotpants · 26/05/2021 09:46

I think the boosters will just end up being given out like the flu jab each year. They are already experimenting with a combined flu/covid shot.

Also the at a guess the priority list for boosters will end up a lot smaller than the first list. Mostly because the jabs work better than expected. Only the very elderly or vulnerable that have immune system issues are likely to need them. Fingers crossed.

BruceAndNosh · 26/05/2021 09:50

How are they going to manage all the elderly boosters if they are closing GP hubs?

I don't know. I don't think the protocol for boosters is even agreed yet.

To be honest, the hub where i volunteer serves 6 practices and isn't geographically convenient for most of them. It's a very efficient hub doing 1000+ doses per session but it is the arse end of nowhere. I'm pretty sure there are "online" places closer for some patients.

bumpetybumpbump · 26/05/2021 09:52

I don't think a mistake as husband and friends have had similar, all same age. We are not in a high case area or high risk so I'm tempted to book for 6 weeks time. I imagine most will book though, which might not be great for long term efficacy as a whole? Unless they are planning MRNA boosters for those who had Pfizer.

bumpetybumpbump · 26/05/2021 09:53

*for those who had AZ

BruceAndNosh · 26/05/2021 09:53

Combining flu/ covid shot sounds great idea

OhYouBadBadKitten · 26/05/2021 10:44

The on,y thing with gp hubs closing, is that they have been the ones who have been able to get the reluctant and the anxious along. Take up will drop significantly without that kind voice encouraging them along.

randomlyLostInWales · 26/05/2021 11:13

@BruceAndNosh

Any idea why Wales figures are overall quite a bit better than rest of UK?
Radio 4's More or Less looked at this today.

www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b006qshd/episodes/player

They think it becuase apparently assigning them quicker - which does come with some risk but that's not been an issue so far. They were saying 80% of adults here had had a first jab and some places like Cardiff were two months ahead with their vaccine program.

TruelyStruttingHotpants · 26/05/2021 13:59

So questions because today my brain is not working at all

  • What number of second doses will mean half the adult population is fully vaccinated?

*Does anyone know roughly how many 20 to 29 year olds there are? I had a chart with amount of people in each age range but can't find it now.

www.statista.com/statistics/281174/uk-population-by-age/

This has a bar chart grouped by age for UK population in 2019

  • seems to be about 9 million 20-29 year olds.
Bordois · 26/05/2021 14:14

26.3 million is 50% i think
