Worried.....I have my AZ 1st jab tomorrow

Hi I'm 36 and have my first jab booked tomorrow. It's the AZ. I'm really worried. I think I'm going to refuse it. I can imagine afterwards I'd be in a state of worry and am thinking it's not worth it. What are you're opinions ? Would you have the AZ ?

OP posts:

I'm 32. When I'm offered it, I'll research the latest statistics on risks due to covid vs risks due to blood clots.

When I last looked (and they're learning more all the time), if you're high risk from covid, e.g. older people, or likely to catch it, you're much better off with the jab. If you're young (under 30) healthy and covid rates remain v low, then the risks and benefits of Astrazenica are fairly equal.

Seriously OP, there have been dozens of threads like this over the last few weeks. You only need to scroll through the first few pages of this board to find them.

Just read through the ones that exist. All the comments are the same - no-one is going to say anything on this thread that hasn't been said 100 times already!

Boph · 26/04/2021 11:47

My 23 year old DS had his 2nd dose yesterday. He wasn't remotely concerned as he understands how low the risk is.
Do you work for an NHS trust? I'm surprised you have only just been offered it?

Orchidflower1 · 26/04/2021 11:51

Have it.

Orchidflower1 · 26/04/2021 11:52

Simple

paralysedbyinertia · 26/04/2021 11:55

I've had it, OP, and I'll be going back for my second dose. I understand the anxiety as I felt it myself, but if you actually look at the facts instead of focusing on the fear, it makes sense to have it.

Please get the vaccine.

SpeedRunParent · 26/04/2021 11:59

I'm due my second AZ vaccine on 19th May. The chances of me having a fatal blood clot from having Covid is massively higher than the chance of having one because of the vaccine. The rest is down to common sense.

PurplePumpkinDream · 26/04/2021 12:00

Sadly in some countries like Italy even people of 60+ (the group advised to have the AZ) have walked out from vaccination centres when realised the AZ was on the menu. Scenes of death and desperation like was happening last year soon forgotten. The result of bad media scaremongering.

lavieengrenache · 26/04/2021 12:00

First post......

ifonly4 · 26/04/2021 12:00

Despite the risks, my 19 year old DD would happily have your vaccine and be very grateful - she's desperate to have it. Obviously, if you know it's not right for you though, that's your choice.

ifonly4 · 26/04/2021 12:02

Forgot to say, OP, I'm a bit older than you and have had both doses of AstraZeneca due to work. I felt a great sense of relief immediately afterwards, knowing I'd done what I could to protect myself, my close family and friends and hopefully get this country back on track.

HollyBollyBooBoo · 26/04/2021 12:02

5 million vaccinations and 30 people get blood clots. That 0.0006%. Sounds safe to me. But what the media doesn’t tell you that out of 5 million people, without having a vaccination, you’d expect 100 people a month to get a blood clot. They happen for other reasons.

Ariela · 26/04/2021 12:10

Why ?
Surely you're more at risk of getting it '&' being far more ill if you do get it, than you'd ever be if you had the jab?
Really do not understand why anyone wouldn't want to be vaccinated against an illness we still don't know masses about, that lots of people are still suffering long term effects of many months after getting it. Vs a small risk of possible blood clot (and that risk is lower than the risk of getting blood clot with the virus/getting a blood clot anyway)?

Up to you, but the science is there. Backed up by 4 months real life data of the [poduct working

Tamtam86 · 26/04/2021 12:14

I totally understand your concerns, I'm 35 and haven't been offered it yet but at this stage I'm still unsure. My logical brain is telling me the risk is tiny, but I had a reaction to the flu vaccine when I was pregnant and had low platelets after it, so I can't help worrying that it would make me more susceptible to a reaction to this vaccine and weighed up against my personal risk from Covid as a healthy under 40 I'm not sure I'm totally comfortable taking it. (Although if I hadn't had a reaction to a previous vaccine I don't think I'd be worrying at all)

bunburyscucumbersandwich · 26/04/2021 12:17

You're more likely to get a clot from being pregnant, smoking or taking the pill. And if you want to refuse, please cancel ASAP, so someone else can have the vaccine and it isn't wasted!

titchy · 26/04/2021 12:21

Oh another brand new poster declaring they won't be having the AZ vaccine. What a surprise...

Florelei · 26/04/2021 12:25

Are you going to worry about the risk of dying or coming to harm on your journey to and from the vaccination centre?

This probably carries a higher risk.

Hettylala · 26/04/2021 12:48

Only you can decide if it's worth it for you. I had mine on Friday OP, and I was worried, and indeed will still be a bit anxious until 4 weeks are up. However, I'm glad I had it done. The risk is low, and it does seem that medics are now on the alert for potential clots after the vaccine. I had a whole A4 sheet given to me on what to look for and what to do if I do get any symptoms.

Delatron · 26/04/2021 12:51

So many brand new posters. They don’t get involved in any other discussions. Just how worried they are about AZ. We’re not medical professionals on here. Nobody can help you or tell you what to do. There’s clear info out there about risk and benefit. You need to come to your own conclusion.

What’s the point in all these threads? There’s so many of them. Maybe HQ should make a separate board...

enjoysun · 26/04/2021 13:00

You are asking our opinions? Us. The anonymous faceless strangers on the internet. Don't be naive.

If you are in a state of worry please find appropriate advice from responsible sources, such as MHRA, the NHS website, the Green Book.

You will get loads of folk agreeing with you, loads disagreeing with you. You will start an argument and all for what? You most likely will be no better informed at the end, and will still be "going to refuse it"

At least do the responsible thing and let them know in advance. I had someone similar the other day at the vaccine centre, ranted at me for 20 minutes, wouldn't listen to my advice, then refused it. Meanwhile the queue was out the door!

MarshaBradyo · 26/04/2021 13:01

Yes I already have.

Really good to have had it, no issues.

Parker231 · 26/04/2021 13:07

I’ve had my first AZ - second in a couple of weeks.

Cookerhood · 26/04/2021 13:08

My 21 & 24 year olds have had it, and will be willingly rolling up their sleeves for the 2nd one (so will I, but I'm old Grin)

mumwon · 26/04/2021 13:15

OP the whole idea of making the rare & unusual clotting issues public is so IF in the unlikely event (stats are still incredibly tiny) of anyone developing these extremely rare events they will recognise go straight to a& e & be tested. The first step is to check if you have low platelets - it is not typical thrombosis because that is not an autoimmune affect -this is.It is similar to a rare autoimmune reaction to heparin, ironically a blood thinner & they are still not certain that there is a link
In the extremely unlikely event of this occurring they will be able to treat someone straight away -so it will cause minimal problems. When you go for vaccine or you look on line they will tell you exactly what to look out for
I seriously suspect that the publicity geared over reaction to this issue is partially linked to financial aspects in other countries where the companies are wary of loosing big money compared to our not for profit system. It maybe me being cynical but its interesting that Johnson & Johnson who had similar reports has now been passed by USA FDA for use. & what is going on in the EU!!!
Dh is older BUT he actually has a low platelets - ITP an autoimmune condition - & he has had his second vax
Please don't be frightened op - read up on the side effects put out by the NHS & if you do decide you want to cancel - please let them know (my ds & one of my dd both under 40 have had vax)
please don't read what people say as comments in the papers -many are - shall we say- professional trolls or political antivaxxers. If they had these conditions why didn't they do yellow cards?

ImTheWolfToday · 26/04/2021 13:20

Yes I would have it, already have and looking forward to my second. (I’m in my 30s)
