Would you vaccinate your child?

Have just seen a post (in the daily Mail, sorry) suggesting that all over 12s could be offered a vaccine from September. It made mention of the AZ vaccine trials in children above 6 so I am unsure whether this vaccine is one of the ones planned for use?

This was along side the news that the az vaccine carries a 1 in 126000 chance of death.

Bearing in mind that 14 people under 20 have died of Covid.

How is this a sensible risk/benefit analysis?!

I am in my late 30s and when I did the Covid calculator my risk of dying if I caught Covid (which is obviously not a guaranteed thing) is 1 in 145000 so I am assuming the risk for a 12 year old is thousands of times less than that.

Who would vaccinate their children?

My youngest i don’t think would want it but my eldest has a very ingrained sense of social responsibility, he puts me to shame. I believe he’d have it solely to protect others.

ferryblue · 24/04/2021 01:00

Over my dead body.

40somethingJBJ · 24/04/2021 01:08

My 15yo would choose to have the vaccine, do, yes, I would.

DeRigueurMortis · 24/04/2021 01:17

Yes - but he'd want to take it anyway.

MixedUpFiles · 24/04/2021 01:19

My child has an underlying medical condition and we are extremely worried about the potential complications of her catching Covid. We know her risk of death is low, but we also know that her risk of complication and hospitalization is high. We have already discussed vaccination with her doctors. We will be hoping for one of the first appointments when they open them for her age group.

Oh and I'm not anti vaxx, my DD has had all the standard childhood vaccines thus far. Not this one

My 16y old has had Pfizer (zero effects) and I would vaccinate siblings down to 12 once available.

Blubellwood · 24/04/2021 01:45

Yes. I would. When opposing views are full of hyperbole, emotion snd superlatives, it doesn’t sway me.

MRex · 24/04/2021 06:45

@FromEden

Here is the report if anyone is interested, its not made up.
This is made-up anti-vax nonsense. It originated from a woman posting a picture on Facebook that she later admitted wasn't the same child; the investigating journalist confirmed that no report exists in VAERS and they were unable to find any evidence that the child mentioned existed. Full investigation report here: amp.usatoday.com/amp/7090316002.

Where do you find this shit? What's even in it for you to try to worry people?

FromEden · 24/04/2021 07:25

@MRex The report does exist in VAERS. Go to wonder.cdc.gov and search VAERS for report number 1166062-1. Its there. Not bullshit. Maybe the Facebook post was. But the case itself has been officially reported.

Whoopsmahoot · 24/04/2021 07:28

I did. Child offered vaccine as they have a chronic illness. Was off colour for a day then absolutely fine. Never hesitated.

FromEden · 24/04/2021 07:29

I mean people like you don't help either, labeling anyone with genuine concerns as crazy anti vaxx conspiracy theorists. You might want to actually look into things yourself rather than rely on USA today which clearly tried to brush off the report by conflating it with a Facebook post.

Oblomov21 · 24/04/2021 07:33

"How is this a sensible risk/benefit analysis?! "

But surely it is. The risk is very small, isn't it?

Natsku · 24/04/2021 07:52

I will when a vaccine is available for younger children. My oldest is 10 so too young for the Pfizer one that they will likely offer to over 12s on my country. She really wants to be vaccinated.

NelliePig · 24/04/2021 08:00

Well we breastfeed for a few months after the vaccine and shes still working her way through the frozen milk now. But, I doubt I'd get her vaccinated until she needed to go to nursery and shes only nearly 1, so would have time to see some more research by the time shes 3 and a bit! X

MRex · 24/04/2021 08:00

Anti-vax poster challenged by the journalist that this isn't in VAERS, which it wasn't at end of March. Medical staff see fit NOT to add a case to VAERS in timely fashion for death of child, but it's added by a member of the public on 4th April. The dates are different; "Lyndzi" had a second dose "last Wednesday" reported on 30th March, illness on Thursday, yet the dates used are 17th March (Friday). Yeah, right. It looks much more believable when the dates aren't even the correct days of the week.

NelliePig · 24/04/2021 08:01

Obviously... that would be dependant on if they moved on to under 5s anyway!

PeppaPan · 24/04/2021 08:17

I have had the vaccine and I would categorically refuse it for my children.

It is a new vaccine technology and hasn't been around for long enough to understand all the side effects.

Hearing about all the reports from women that the AZ has affected their cycle, there is no chance in hell that I would let my teen daughters have it. No chance.

Abraxan · 24/04/2021 08:31

Dd is now an adult T 19yand will chose herself. She's has always said she will be vaccinated and even applied to be in the trials. It isn't particularly for hers;eg she wants the vaccinate but to protect others - she has family who are vulnerable as well as friends her own age who are also in the cv and cev categories.

If she was younger - then yes, we'd have her vaccinated. She has chosen to have a flu vaccine for years. Mainly for her own benefit, having been poorly with flu once over an exam period.

FromEden · 24/04/2021 09:12

Anti-vax poster

Nope, not anti vax. As I said, my child has had all of her vaccines to date. Me too. But whatever.

SophieGiroux · 24/04/2021 09:12

Absolutely not. A complete waste of taxpayer money and unnecessary risk to children for something that is a mild illness for them

FromEden · 24/04/2021 09:15

Medical staff see fit NOT to add a case to VAERS in timely fashion for death of child, but it's added by a member of the public on 4th April.

There is a massive backlog with VAERS, it takes a while to update. It's on VAERS now. Not sure about the lyndzi thing, are you confusing a Facebook post with vaers?? I'm not on Facebook so wouldn't know about that.

AvaCallanach · 24/04/2021 09:17

"Mac n Chise on Twitter, but even then the risk is tiny. You could msg them directly with specifics for you dc. They’re a molecular biologist committed to reporting the facts behind the misleading headlines and fake news".

The risk may be tiny, but it's even tinier with flu vaccines and my kid was the one it happened to. So it's hard to be blazé when your kid has had the one in a billion autoimmune reaction already.
