Would you vaccinate your child?

Have just seen a post (in the daily Mail, sorry) suggesting that all over 12s could be offered a vaccine from September. It made mention of the AZ vaccine trials in children above 6 so I am unsure whether this vaccine is one of the ones planned for use?

This was along side the news that the az vaccine carries a 1 in 126000 chance of death.

Bearing in mind that 14 people under 20 have died of Covid.

How is this a sensible risk/benefit analysis?!

I am in my late 30s and when I did the Covid calculator my risk of dying if I caught Covid (which is obviously not a guaranteed thing) is 1 in 145000 so I am assuming the risk for a 12 year old is thousands of times less than that.

Who would vaccinate their children?

@BettysCardigan

What sort of protest would that be exactly? One that impacts the protestor and isn't noted by anyone else? Brilliantly effective.
How is having it a protest?

If you don’t want to do something then don’t and stand up and say why. (Eg I don’t agree to being coerced into a vaccine that I don’t actually need, given my age, or want) It takes enough people to stand up against things for them to stop.

Hummingbird18 · 23/04/2021 16:38

I don't know if this has already been said as I haven't read the whole thread. But those of you saying children won't die from covid, what about long covid? I know of several children who have been off school with long covid for months now and can barely get out of bed. They are 11 years old. I know this only happens in a very small % so you have to weigh up the risks and benefits. Scientists know how vaccines work and have been used for decades. Doctors know how to treat allergic reactions and blood clots that could occur from vaccines. However, long covid is something entirely new that doctors know very little about yet and there is currently no treatment for. Something to consider.

BettysCardigan · 23/04/2021 16:40

Have it, don't have it, whatever, but let's not pretend it's some sort of noble protest. Literally nobody will notice or care what you do.

Flyonawalk · 23/04/2021 16:40

A definite No from me to vaccinating under 18s.

We can calculate their risk of harm from covid using available data. We cannot calculate their risk in 5,10,20 years from these unlicensed vaccines because there isn’t yet sufficient data.

If enough people protest against it then yes, people will notice.

But lots of people want to do it....

First kid that dies or gets ill of vaccination complications will be all over the news for days. And hopefully that will put an end to this nonsense.

There is a little girl call Maddie who became very ill after taking the vaccine in the trial. Her family has posted on social media. However, it's not all over the news?

Do you have a link? Nowhere on social media that I can see

Comefromaway · 23/04/2021 17:38

Something doesn’t add up there. For starters according to a random YouTube video with no proof if the child existing it was Moderna. The parents apparently too, the child to ER several times and were fibbed off at first. Surely anyone taking part in a vaccine trial would be monitored/given instructions what to do in the case of a severe reaction.

@cherry425

I don't want too- but if they had to have it to be able to go on holiday or live a normal life then yes- have no choice really, I don't want them missing out and I would hope for the best. If they are able to live life normally without it then I'd wait a couple of years see if their are any side effects. I've just had my second and I feel absolutely dreadful.
If enough people put their foot down and refuse, then there wouldn’t be any mandate for children to get it.

It should always be a personal choice. Hopefully doctors will work with families to make the choice best for them.

The person I replied to originally said that her children didn’t want it but would be coerced into it by the need for a vaccine passport.
BettysCardigan · 23/04/2021 19:19

Right, but that's one person.

For fucks sake...there are posters on here, myself included, who have children who are medically vulnerable, who have been shielding for nearly a whole year...who are hopeful that a paediatric vaccine programme will protect their children. Think about what you post, and don't be an arse.
YoutubeZoom · 23/04/2021 19:29

As the vaccine would protect DS's vulnerable friends and family members, of course he would have it. He has already said so.

Barbie222 · 23/04/2021 19:31

Yes. We'll have to learn the hard way though, looking at this thread. Exactly how long do we want new strains to surface and for intermittent lockdowns to go on for, everyone?

It's roughly 0.5% of children who contract covid who have the severe PIMS follow up which can be fatal.

It's 13 - 16% that report long covid after an infection.

Those are big numbers, if children are allowed to be the reservoir.

That's what I never understand. The anti vax bridge are also the anti lockdown brigade. How are we a year in and they don't get that it's really one or the other?
tsmainsqueeze · 23/04/2021 19:45

@wasthataburp

It would be highly irresponsible to vaccine your child right now. They said they don't know whether it affects fertility or not yet. Enough said
Fertility is my main concern too. My child will not be having the vaccine , the other 2 will make their own choice they are young adults. I am pro vaccine , my 3 kids have had all vaccines. I would never forgive myself if a relatively unknown vaccine caused her major problems further down the line . I don't care if i am judged for not considering others , she is my concern and responsibility now .
Roonerspismed · 23/04/2021 19:46

I can’t understand how it’s sensible to do stage four vaccine trials on children.

We did it with adults with the AZ vaccine and a “vanishingly rare” side effect not picked up in trials is now something like 1 in 100,000 and that’s before you take age into consideration

I cannot fathom the rationale here.

RhubarbTea · 23/04/2021 19:53

No, absolutely not.

BluebellsGreenbells · 23/04/2021 19:55

My GCSE and A-level childen I'd mainly consider so their education wasn't disrupted again not so sure about youngest child who'd be in this 12+ group

16+ can have the Pfizer vaccine, mine have had it.

LynetteScavo · 23/04/2021 20:05

No I wouldn't.

I'd rather they risked catching Covid than suffered the side effects I have.

bumbleymummy · 23/04/2021 20:37

Not wanting to vaccinate children does not make someone ‘anti-vaxx’ in general. The lockdown was to prevent the nhs being overwhelmed. We have prioritised the vaccination of the groups most likely to end up in hospital so we shouldn’t need lockdowns anymore - even without vaccinating young people and children. How are we a year in and people still don’t realise that? Hmm
