I've decided not to go ahead with my 2nd dose of the AZ vaccine. I'm happy having the Pfizer - will this be allowed?

I've just lost all confidence in the AZ vaccine and regret having it at all.
I know the risks are tiny etc etc but I want a vaccine without these associated risks.
I'm 56 so in one of the top groups but just feel so uneasy about it all now.

@roguetomato

Thing that really baffles me is, when you talk about risks, Pfizer isn't totally risk free either. But the focus seems to be only on AZ and blood clot, nothing else. Why is that?

Same. I'm 32 and I don't see why I'm ok to have it but under 30's can't. What does 2 years make a difference? Does my blood turn funny after 30 or something? I've had my first vaccine but I've decided not to have my second. I'm not interested in any other vaccine either. Lost confidence.

I don't think think that's what the issue is. It's about the balance of risk. The stats say that, because a 30 year old is far less likely to die or be hospitalised by Covid than an 80 year old, the corresponding "risk" of the jab appears greater.

ILoveToads · 08/04/2021 19:54

I have a genuine reason for not having the AZ vaccine due to a history of thrombocytopenia. If everyone with no real medical reason refuses the AZ that is going to delay people like me.

frumpety · 08/04/2021 20:02

Yes, but the people most likely to be hospitalised in the first place are older and/or have underlying health conditions

That is true, but the research is on people who have been hospitalised and readmitted within 140 days, I wonder if anyone is doing any reasearch on people who are admitted in the same period following a previous covid positive test and who were not admitted for the initial infection ?

Oaktree55 · 08/04/2021 20:11

@RedToothBrush mmmmm everyone I think Red Toothbrush has a connection with AZ or U.K. public health. Anyone can verify my points. SA etc are rapidly rejecting this vaccine. Other countries don’t want it and are actively lobbying against it.

I’ve always been honest. Read up peeps it’s all there if you look 🤣

Oaktree55 · 08/04/2021 20:13

Ps they didn’t stabilise the spike (likely cause if autoimmune issues although not yet proven)

Read up on that @RedToothBrush 😝

God you talk crap....🤣

EasterIssland · 08/04/2021 20:15

@ILoveToads I hope you get your vaccine soon. And tbh right now you should be prioritise to get it over other people and you’ve got a risk that others don’t

whenwillthemadnessend · 08/04/2021 20:18

The media news is scary but there were approx 1580 road deaths during 2020

And here is a table of deaths in the workplace

Statistically the chance of a clot is teeny tiny and being in a car or working is far riskier

Really? All those who think I talk crap just look up the points I make. Been making them since last summer and this shitty half baked vaccine was developed.

Proof is in the pudding. We’re reaping the rewards of our “Oxford” vaccine (no prior vax experience) now.

All there guys just search for the information from verified sources not Mumsnet.

Indeed we are. Its great isn't it.

Thankyou Oxford Uni / AZ 😍

Sa rejected it on a stupidly small sample size.

Thankfully We have reaped rewards from “our” Oxford vac as you call it oaktree. We had 53 deaths today, France had about 400. Poland had 900. That is thanks to the vaccines being deployed in this country. Now of course we don’t know who exactly has had their life saved because they have had a vaccine (of either variety) but it might have been my mum or my colleague’s mum or my neighbour’s dad. To call it a “shitty “ vaccine is so ignorant imo but we’ll have to agree to disagree I guess.
roguetomato · 08/04/2021 20:33

So it seems like the blood clot isn't exclusive to AZ.

Theredjellybean · 08/04/2021 20:34

The best vaccine is the one in your arm..

They arw all safer than multiple common medicines people take every day.

There isn't going to be a menu to pick from, your not paying customers..
If you don't want a vaccine after you have been provided with all the information pertaining to risks vs benefits etc... Then your choice but you really cannot then complain when vaccines passports are introduced and you cannot go to the theatre or festival..

Just have the vaccines... Ask the vaccinator for a chat about pro and cons...
But stop taking what the media, mn, your auntie's neighbour who works at the hospital says as the equivalent of evidence based medicine

roguetomato · 08/04/2021 20:48

I just wondered, since the blood clotting is immune reaction, if those had a reaction would have got same result if they contracted covid?

endofthelinefinally · 08/04/2021 20:56

We know that clotting is a complication of covid. We also know that the type of clotting is unique to covid. There are so many real experts looking into this, we need to listen to the haematologists, the virologists, the immunologists who are working so hard to get us through this.

Not sure if anyone else has linked to this, but it makes interesting reading, especially the risk groups and known potential causes of this very rare condition.

rtgiv · 08/04/2021 21:54

It's always fascinated me people's reluctance in situations like the AZ vaccine. Do you have similar concerns that you dont.... smoke? drink alcohol? buy your DC kinder surprise eggs (Banned in USA because of small toys DC could choke on)? vape (relatively new tech with unknown long term effects)? etc - everything has risks, some less risky than others obviously

Sure Pfizer and Moderna do look good, I wouldn't mind those - but mRNA is still "new" science in humans. I suppose at least AZ is old science with longer historical data in humans there's also the huge profit difference between Pfizer/Moderna and AZ which may or may not of influenced the recent news

Personally I'm 32, 13days ago I had my 1st dose of AZ - text from GP and booked within minutes of receiving the text, absolutely no side effects except from a smaller than a 5p bruise @ injection site. Had to persuade my Dad and Brother to have it (they both had 24hrs of fever etc) but I always said I'd have it ASAP and I did; no regrets.

I've never cared before about things like this, taken all sorts of drugs both licensed and unlicensed so why bother caring now? Stats look pretty good, the link between the rare clots and the vaccine hasn't actually been proven yet - could still be just "hitting a blood vessel during injection".

I guess people are all different (maybe I'm just too relaxed/carefree) but if you've had AZ already why worry yourself? You've had it; it's half done, dont leave a job half finished, get your full 2 doses and happy days!

Anyway I just took some tramadol, paracetamol and naproxen washed down with some artificial sweetened pepsi max for a herniated disc in my lower back and had a couple of puffs on my vape containing many food flavourings (probably some that are even linked to some sort of cancers, but possibly less risk than those fire stick things I used to smoke). Oh and I just posted this on a (rare but happens exploding) mobile phone with loads of blue light from the screen, surrounded by tons of radio waves, a mile away from an active 38year old nuclear power station

Hmm

Same here, I’ve never bothered about things like this in the past. Same when my kids had their vaccines I just trotted off to the doctor and got it done without a thouhhtt, including the swine flu vaccine. I don’t think I’m slapdash but I trust the medicines regulators not to push drugs on us that will kill or maim us.

Boringlynormal · 08/04/2021 23:17

SA etc are rapidly rejecting this vaccine

I’m no AZ cheerleader and am actually pretty upset to have had the first dose of it, but this statement isn’t accurate in this context.

South Africa rejected it on the grounds of it not being effective enough against mild - moderate Covid. It was a really weird decision since we are trying to stop people dying (which it 100% did in their study) not stop people potentially feeling like garbage for a week or two. It was nothing to do with the side effects or risks.
