MHRA may change advice for young people receiving AZ vaccine

IloveSooty424 · 05/04/2021 22:18

I just saw this news story on Channel 4 news tonight.

www.channel4.com/news/uk-medicines-regulator-considers-issuing-new-advice-over-oxford-astrazeneca-jab

It seems the MHRA may follow other European countries and Canada and advise that younger people should not receive the AZ vaccine. It seems the decision will be made imminently in the coming days.

I’m due to book my vaccine this week and don’t know whether to wait and see how this plays out. I’m 42. I’m also concerned that if younger people will only be offered the Pfizer vaccine it will slow down the vaccine programme substantially.

Any thoughts?

This has thrown me.
I'm 51, I've had the AZ, as allergies meant I wasn't able to have the Pfizer...second jab will be mid May.
Have just seen the dr as have had aching leg and inflamed varicose vein which I thought could have been triggered by the tranexamic acid I take. Told by up to keep an eye on leg and go to urgent care if any changes.
Feel so worried about it all, and massively emotional about the paediatric vaccine roll out being paused, as ds has shielded all year. Christ.

@Comefromaway

So a young person who has had their first dose like my daughter should still get their 2nd dose of AZ, who is to say the 2nd dose won't cause an issue.
No-one case say that 100% but the risk is very rare. Even things like ibuprofen can have very rare side effects, such as increased risk of myocardial infarction, heart failure and stroke but many people pop those without a thought!
RubyWooRed · 07/04/2021 15:32

@littlepeas

This is an extremely shit outcome for women in their 30’s and 40’s. I do not feel confident enough to have the vaccine based on this latest briefing. I’m 38.
Me too I’m 39 Also take contraceptive pill which is a blood clot risk , so am I at more risk of getting a clot via AZ Jab as I’m female ,under 40 and on the pill etc.

Why just stop it for under 30

CuriousaboutSamphire · 07/04/2021 15:32

Those with already known possible issues should talk to GPs; don't have second dose if you have blood clotting issues.

As EMA said, no way to confirm causality in vaccine. But covid does.

cathyandclare · 07/04/2021 15:32

It's likely that they've calculated the risk from COVID and the risk from the vaccine and chosen an age at which the balance is unacceptable.

jerometheturnipking · 07/04/2021 15:32

At 31 this doesn't fill me with confidence at all. I've been anxiously waiting to see when I'd get offered a vaccination but now I'm not so sure, given that I'm extremely low-risk anyway.

DayBath · 07/04/2021 15:33

38, have just had AZ , feeling pretty shit about this. As PP said, how come the second dose is considered zero risk if you survived the first one? It doesn't sit well with me at all, there can't be much data on second doses in lower age groups yet to go on. I would be less angry if the vaccine actually worked as well as the others but it feels like I've been given the cheapest rather than the most effective. New studies show it's pretty crap against the newer variants so I don't feel very confident at all.

Wish wish wish I had waited.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 07/04/2021 15:33

Lots of data there. Again, link is becoming more likely, more work needed. Younger people will need more data.

Waiting for JVT to talk about the course correction

Does anyone have a link to the age range of those having the side effect and how many vaccinated in each age range? It's hard to find this critical information.

littlepeas · 07/04/2021 15:34

11% of people with COVID get dvt? Surely not? Or is it 11% of people who are hospitalised?

Noname99 · 07/04/2021 15:35

I agree .... in my 40s and my appointment is next week. Hoping it’s the Moderna vaccine but if it’s the AZ, I will be saying no. Rather take my chances with Covid.

unchienandalusia · 07/04/2021 15:37

@Noname99 slide right now showing risk of covid is 5.7 and risk if vaccine is 0.5 in your age group. So you really would be taking your chances.

Those saying you've been thrown under a bus. Who by?

freddiesmoustache · 07/04/2021 15:37

Can't see them giving moderna to anybody over 30 now, surely they'll need to be reserved for the under 30s

EasterIssland · 07/04/2021 15:37

doubt they'll give you moderna, you've had AZ so they'll ofer you AZ, you're not below 30 , there is people that have not had their first one and these vaccines have arrived for them.
Comefromaway · 07/04/2021 15:37

Dd is 19 and has taken medication for very heavy periods which carries a slight risk of blood clotting since the age of 14.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 07/04/2021 15:38

Some of you are not hearing what is actually being said.

Just wait... See what the correction actually is!

Yes, this is key information. I keep reading x number from 20 million vaccines etc but how many of those were actually at a higher risk from a clot? Most will be over 60 so actually it could be x number from a much lower pool of people.
EasterIssland · 07/04/2021 15:38

The images and the reason why it's 30 years and not 40 is being show now, clearly there is a big gap between 29 and 30 in the data they're displaying
38yo person
8.0 icu admissions/100
0.8 / 100 vaccine

largeaslifeandtwiceasugly · 07/04/2021 15:39

Not sure if I will get my 2nd jab. I have had Covid and one dose of AZ. I am 51, on HRT. I also have cerebrovascular disease.

Very disappointed especially as the AZ is ineffective against the South African variant.

Whats the point?

CuriousaboutSamphire · 07/04/2021 15:39

That slide is being discussed now... BBC news RR on vaccine and covid.

Take the vaccine unless you have specific issues

Username198 · 07/04/2021 15:39

Awesome 31 and doctors have refused to prescribe me the pill because they deem me to be of increased risk of a stroke/blood clot. What do I do now.
