Green light for a holiday in England on 12th April

With the second stage of lockdown easing on 12th April, self-catering holidays for members of the same household are allowed in England. If you are going on the 12th, where are you going and how are you feeling about it? Are you setting off just after midnight, planning to arrive at your accommodation just after midnight or going at the 'normal' time?

Are people going to take their DC out of school for this at the first opportunity?

Isn't everywhere going to be absolutely packed/fully booked? It's still going to be social distancing/masks/rules just in a different place. Unless in the middle of nowhere with no intention of going out, and only eating outdoors if you do.

Littlepoppet1 · 05/04/2021 18:31

No English holiday booked but we are meant to be going to Wales in early May rebooked from last year but I'm not holding out much hope for it happening Sad

Sparklingbrook · 05/04/2021 18:32

My parents are off to Wales in June (booked a year ago) and they are stressing about how busy it might be and thinking they will come back early if it's too bad.

Katie517 · 05/04/2021 18:33

We are going to Cornwall on the 13th was already booked before the 12th was a thing so have just got lucky with the dates. Really looking forward to a change of scenery and being by the coast.

Sweetpea84 · 05/04/2021 18:34

I’m of to Kent staying in a caravan on the 12th just need to get out of London with the kids, they’re still on holiday.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 05/04/2021 18:35

We're going to Dorset in May and I can't wait. We purposely booked somewhere with a garden so if it's too busy we can just sit outside away from everyone.

fizbosshoes · 05/04/2021 18:35

1 DC goes back to school on 12th April so went go away until at least half term, if not summer.

BlackLambAndGreyFalcoln · 05/04/2021 18:37

Going for a long weekend on Thursday 15th April until the Sunday. It's the last week of DD's Easter holiday (back on 19 april). Can't wait!!!

notenoughtogoround · 05/04/2021 18:39

Our school holidays are this week and next so, yes, we are off on a self catering holiday with just our household in the UK. It was originally booked to start on the 11th so we’ve just agreed with the owner that we will come first thing on the 12th and they can keep the money for the Sunday night.
We won’t be doing much we wouldn’t be able to do here (walking, bikes rides etc) but in a different place and maybe visiting some different National Trust properties 👍

I am happy to wait a bit longer. Maybe September after the schools go back and everyone's got it out of their systems. I would really love to go and stay somewhere and not have to wear a mask to go out and not eat in restaurants with a page of rules.

But who knows where we'll be by then with all this.

Toottootdrivers · 05/04/2021 18:47

We're going to the Lakes on the 12th. Pure coincidence that it falls on that date as it's been booked for a year. It's supposed to be our honeymoon but the wedding bit has been postponed (again).

I can't wait. DS has just started walking so looking forward to lots of woodland walks, feeding the ducks and picking up every pine cone in Cumbria Grin

Foxymoxy68 · 05/04/2021 18:52

We had hoped that travel to Wales might be allowed from the 12th April too (we have a self contained holiday home 2 miles over the border!) but nothing has been said about it today. Has anyone heard anything? I guess it’s the Welsh government’s call....

VeryScary · 05/04/2021 18:54

I live in Cornwall and I’m dreading it!

I’m a teacher. I broke up Maundy Thursday so not back until two weeks today (same as my own children). Not planning a holiday but just clearing this misconception up.
Sparklingbrook · 05/04/2021 19:05

Ah ok @motherrunner, I have no school age children so no idea about the school holidays any more. But would like to avoid them really.

Sparklingbrook · 05/04/2021 19:09

I have checked the local High school and they go back on 19/4. But i guess it's also important to check the school holidays at the holiday destination.

Yes, it's the second week of our school holidays but the schools will have gone back in the holiday area, which will help.

Living in a similar area, I understand, and it probably makes us more considerate visitors. We prefer holidaymakers to daytrippers though. They started on 29th March - actually before that.

No, we are waiting until next year before holidays and travel. I don’t see any enjoyment currently with cases still ongoing and lots not wearing masks or social distancing. Would rather save the money and go when things are better. Plus we don’t like self catering as not a holiday if you have to cook and wash up etc.

HolmeH · 05/04/2021 19:25

My in-laws are coming up here to stay in a cottage so they can see the Grandkids & have a little holiday! So excited, mainly for the kids & also to have a much, much need but of a breather from a 3 & 1 year old 🙌🏼

We’ve got holidays booked in S Wales & Devon but not until June/July.. people seemed dubious they’d be allowed to happen but it was pretty obvious they would bar some horrendous mutant strain.

If it helps PP, there was no surge in cases in Cornwall the entirety of last summer. In fact cases remained lower than most places in the country. So I don’t think anyone needs to be too concerned! And if it’s more about tourists in general, well, it’s just kinda life isn’t it. I live in a ridiculously popular tourist village in Yorkshire. It’s heaving in summer but I choose to live here. It’s beautiful & tourists just add the hum & buzz of the place. Traffic is shit though. My only gripe.

One of the few things I'm looking forward to about the DC growing up is no longer being tied to the busier and more expensive school holiday dates.

The prices this year seem particularly ridiculous - low availability at up to three times the usual price.

Luckily this is a short break carried forward from a holiday that had to be cancelled. We've lost a couple of days unfortunately but the previous price has been honoured.

We are going to Northumberland coast from 12-16. Fab self catering cottage booked and will be doing walks, beach and eating at true cottage. Cannot wait.

AnyFucker · 05/04/2021 19:33

I am going to my 2nd home the minute my shopping has been delivered at 8am on 12th April.

No kids of school age and week booked off work in anticipation. Halle-fucking-lujah.
