Shielding

Can anyone please advise?

My father had a heart attack just less than a fortnight ago and is now home waiting on a bypass.

He's partially deaf (but refuses to wear a hearing aid) so really only picks up half of a conversation. As a result of this he is unsure if he's been told to shield while waiting on a date for his bypass.

Has anyone been in a similar situation and knows what the answer should be? Also, if he is to shield does my mother have to shield too?

Shielding officially ends as of today.
Of course your father should follow the advice of his cardiologist, if unsure he could maybe contact the cardiac specialist nurse to ask?

I know two people where whole household has been told to isolate v strictly (shielding, not leaving the house at all) for 2 weeks before planned surgery. Understandably.

If you know what consultant he's under, ring their secretary, and although you're not the patient, ime they will give out helpful info that an elderly patient might have missed. If don't know consultant, ring Cardiology Dept of the hospital, and ask what their policy is.

It's important to get this right; someone I know was on a completely isolated dog walk, in the depths of the countryside, when the hospital phoned. His arguement was, there was zero chance of him catching Covid. His surgery was cancelled on the spot.

My husband had a heart attack last April and needed a heart bypass. At first they said he could come home whilst waiting for operation, but he would have had to isolate, but in the end they kept him in till a bed was found at Harefield Hospital the following week. So I would think shielding was necessary.
