False positive Lateral?

Hello

Just wondering if many had had a false positive on the rapid testing?

DS has a slight cough and it's quite warm touch, although his temp is 37. He is also bunged up, all the signs of a classic cold really.

Thought I'd test with the laterals we have at hime (I know you aren't really supposed to use these if you have any symptoms) on the off chance and it came back positive within a minute (I thought they were supposed to take 30 mins??)
Tested my household and DS fathers household (4 adults total) and all are negative.
Tested DH again on another test and again, a very strong positive within a min or so ...

We have just been and had our PCR so will await the results, but just wondering if anyone had had a false positive and if their results were coming up as quickly as this on the lateral?
Can the laterals show as positive on other things such as colds too in children?

Thanks!

Tested DS a second time and strong positive again, sorry.

If he's got symptoms and the test is positive it's very unlikely to be a false positive. The reason they say not to test in symptomatic people is because a negative is very unreliable if you have symptoms rather than because of the risk of false positives.

sourcherie · 30/03/2021 15:21

Sorry to hear that, hope he feels better soon.

In case anyone else comes along wondering about false positives- my ds had a false positive from a lateral flow test performed by a pharmacist, but had absolutely no symptoms at all. PCR came back negative. It’s happened a lot in schools here too, where all the kids are being tested twice a week (not UK).

Thank you 😊

It's that 4 other people are coming up
Negative & both his positive immediately that's making me wonder.

I shall wait it out and see what the results bring.

No , similar to us dc tested positive on lateral quite quickly but you have to wait 30 minutes. Pcr positive, dh the same too quickly positive on lateral confirmed by pcr .
I suspect it’s positive .

Most obvious explanation is DS has COVID but other family members haven't developed it yet.

I agree, that’s most likely an actual positive.

middleager · 31/03/2021 11:31

My boss's DC had a positive LF then a negative PCR this week.

ihatecoconut · 31/03/2021 11:43

Yes DS PCR was a positive.
Mine was negative.

@ihatecoconut Hope he has a fast recovery. How old is he? If in nursery / school that will be his bubble burst and isolation for them over Easter.

AmelieTaylor · 31/03/2021 11:49

Presuming he's 11+, try to encourage him
to stay in his room (take meals to him) & use a separate bathroom if possible if that's not possible make sure he's wiping down the flush & tsos after himself snd flushing the toilet with the seat down and one of the adults wears gloves & cleans the shower down after he's used it. Make sure he has separate cutlery, plates, cups, glasses etc.

Keep windows open.

Get him to use a thermometer & oxImeter regularly.

All 4 adults need to quarantine too.

OverTheRainbow88 · 31/03/2021 11:54

The LFT tests say Takes 15-20 min but usually it’s about 2 min max!

Hope he recovers fast and luckily won’t miss
More education as Easter hol!

ihatecoconut · 04/04/2021 19:58

Thanks all - he's 11.
I've been keeping him in a separate room / the garden as much as possible and lucky I'm still negative on the LFT 5 days later (no symptoms over than a slight runny nose)

His friend also tested positive a couple of days later (same school bubble)

I find it strange that 4 adults this side & 3 adults his friends side are all negative but the two kiddies are positive!

Just seen this searching as I've had 5 positive lateral flows. Bloody FIVE! Yet PCR test results just come back and I'm negative. I rang 119 who said ignore the lateral flows I'm fine. So confused.

Skinnyankles · 10/09/2021 07:24

My dd tested positive twice on a lateral flow. We also had a positive ds at home during this time. However, PCR was negative.

Howshouldibehave · 10/09/2021 07:29

Reading your post and you’ve said DS and DH were both positive? I’d say that wasn’t looking to be false results.
