international travel this summer?

For family visit or holidays, just in general.

And without hotel quarantine.

I mean late July/ August btw.

I know noone can confirm, I just want to hear your thoughts.

OP posts:
FreakinFrankNFurter · 27/03/2021 11:36

I think it’s unlikely, unfortunately. A few weeks ago I had been considering an abroad holiday in August but have written off that idea now, sadly

We do have a Uk trip booked so are fortunate to have that to look forward to.

TechnoDino · 27/03/2021 11:37

Highly unlikey imo. The threat of variants is the main factor.

MaryShelley1818 · 27/03/2021 11:44

I really do hope so but am worried it's looking more unlikely.

AlexaShutUp · 27/03/2021 11:46

Highly unlikely. Sorry.

covetingthepreciousthings · 27/03/2021 11:46

I wouldn't book anything abroad this year, I think it's unlikely..

Lockheart · 27/03/2021 11:47

Hope for the best, prepare for the worst. I.e. assume there'll be none and plan accordingly. If you're wrong, you can book something. If you're right, you've saved yourself a lot of money.

HairyFloppins · 27/03/2021 11:48

I think it might be possible to certain countries on a like a green route sort of thing. It's such a fast changing situation the only thing to do really is to wait and see closer to the time.

starfish88 · 27/03/2021 11:58

I wouldn't necessarily prepare for the worst if you can get a deal that is totally flexible and can easily be cancelled or moved to next year. But read the small print carefully.

lurker101 · 27/03/2021 12:00

I think it will be possible, but will likely require some sort of combination of vaccination/testing/quarantining. So we will still plan to visit family abroad because it will be worth the trade off, but likely won’t do a long weekend European city break.

Totallyfedup1979 · 27/03/2021 12:02

I would be surprised if there was no international travel.
A traffic light system is being looked at.
Follow Paul Charles on Twitter for up to date travel info. He’s pretty good.
I booked my US vacation in 2019 and had to put it back to 2021 last summer. I’m pretty positive at the moment that I’ll get to go and if travel corridors open, I won’t hesitate in jetting off.

IcedPurple · 27/03/2021 12:33

I'm going to go against the grain here and say that I think "non-essential" travel within Europe will be possible by July, if not sooner.

That said, it may depend on proof of vaccination and/or negative tests, and you'd have to be prepared for possible cancellations and the fact that things may be restricted in your destination, making a holiday less enjoyable.

FoonySpucker · 27/03/2021 13:07

the fact that things may be restricted in your destination

This is the bit that many people seem to be missing.

We live in France and the numbers testing positive every day remain horrendous. www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/country/france/

Vaccine rollout is slow and vaccine resistance among the French is around 50% so it is unlikely that there will be high numbers of vaccinated people.

We are not in one of the areas that have the most severe restrictions, but at the moment (and with no signs of any positive changes or any indication of a "roadmap" out) all bars, cafes and restaurants are closed. This has been the case since the end of October.

There is a 7pm curfew.

In may of the towns around here it is compulsory to wear a mask outside - even walking from your car to the supermarket.

I would love to think that summer will be normal - this is traditionally a tourist area and I have no idea how a lot of the local businesses will survive. Equally, I really don't want to face the prospect of a post-summer peak like we had last year.

The world outside of the UK isn't just business as usual. Much of mainland Europe have been tightening the restrictions rather than relaxing them.

Thank you. Really interesting
Crazycatlady83 · 27/03/2021 13:12

Travel in some form will happen, with the traffic light system mentioned above. It’s too big an industry to allow to fail and the government can’t prop it up. Depends where you want to go (France is clearly out of the question!) They seem to be in discussions with the US, and some of the Greece / Spanish islands have very low numbers.

The issue of “variants” can crop up anywhere. We are putting the virus under the most pressure with high vaccine rollout and less cases (as we did in the Summer last year, when the U.K. variant then popped up) The U.K. strain is dominant in the EU. Variants are more likely to happen here than where the virus is being successful.

User1234123 · 27/03/2021 13:19

It will happen. I'm planning on Romania in August for a 5 day break

May 17th to maybe mid June it will be restricted as hell with quarantine and whatever the destination country throws at you. Nobody will bother aside from people willing to fork out the money.

June-July it will be less restrictive but flights will probably be expensive alongside the fact that we'll be opened up here so people will be more open to the idea of staying put. Maybe this will be the point where family members abroad can visit without £200 worth of tests and quarantine.

August, as we were last summer barring a variant issue, but again, a lot of people priced out of it because of the demand. Honestly, best bet for people is early September to somewhere that's still warm like Almeria

When someone like Mike Tildesley says that for the average person, travel is unlikely well....a solo traveller visiting family or going for a city break isn't the average traveller, not over the summer anyway.

I'd add just look at the article in the Independent today about how they haven't actually dished out any fines thus far, strikingly similar to the whole quarantine process from last year, and how it was a big show...

I can't lie, I'm biased in this as someone who loves to travel, but I think looking at all the signs, plus comparing where we are now vs last year (and I got away 3 times last summer...), I think it'll be a case that while they'll be restrictions, it's most certainly going to be possible

ineedaholidayandwine · 27/03/2021 13:24

I think get traffic light system will come in, but i wouldn't book anything right now, I'd wait and book closer to when you want to travel so things are clearer.
Plus booking now i assume would void travel insurance as it goes against FCO advice?

Depends on the travel insurance. Stay Sure have had very good terms.
BlowDryRat · 27/03/2021 13:31

I hope there will be. I have overseas holidays booked for the May half term and the summer holidays. I've also booked UK holidays as back-ups on case we can't go abroad. I don't want to waste my annual leave like I did last year!

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 27/03/2021 13:32

I don’t think it will happen. Look at last year, it spread it every where.

Too many variants. I’ve read they’re going to start testing people leaving France.

I’ve booked for summer. I take fco is against travelling now , but if you do it when it’s alllwed can’t see why is this Would void the contract
OrangeBananaFish · 27/03/2021 13:34

We go to France at the end of August every year. We made it last year (had to self isolate when we got back though) which I wouldn't have expected and only ended up still going because we booked the Eurotunnel in 2019. This year I'm not convinced. My parents seem to think we'll have no problems (we stay in their holiday caravan), but me and DH are a little less convinced.

It would be nice to go, but right now I just don't know. Then again its another 5 months away for us so who knows. We haven't booked yet, usually we're booked (just the Eurotunnel and an overnight stay in each direction) 2 or 3 months ago by now.

AnaofBroceliande · 27/03/2021 13:38

Book something flexible and be prepared to be flexible.

EileenGC · 27/03/2021 13:39

Travelling to some countries will require quarantine on the way back, others won’t. No one knows which ones. No one will know if they’re added to the list before you can get back. No one knows, basically.

I believe international travel will happen in summer. Not without its uncertainties. You will be able to go abroad but the rules might change between leaving and coming back a week later. So we’ll have to be prepared for that. Plus we’ll need to spend a LOT of money on Covid tests, unless there is a universal vaccine passport system for everyone who’s had both doses by summer. Hardly unlikely, I’d say the odds of not requiring a negative test (unless perhaps very low-incidence countries) are less than 5%.

PradaBallbag · 27/03/2021 13:44

I'm booked for a Greek island in late June and I'm cautiously optimistic that it will happen. I think there will be restrictions on where you can go but I've chosen my destination carefully. I didn't want to leave booking til any announcements are made because the demand soars then, along with the prices. I'm prepared to move the holiday if I have to.

I managed to get away twice last summer through similar careful planning.
