How many cases in secondary schools?

Dd is at a moderately sized secondary school with about 2,500 kids.
We are in an area with a really low infection rate 2 weeks ago and the school have had so many cases.
They have less than half the kids in school at the moment due to positive cases and sending contacts home.

Is this happening in many other schools?

I have stopped dd going to school as she has a really important appointment at hospital next week and I can’t risk her missing it.

Smaller secondary 950 pupils. One case so far. It was on the day they went back so she tested positive and had to go home. It didn’t affect anyone else as the testing area kept all students separate until they had a negative test result.

6 form entry school. Two cases, siblings. One picked up in school and one subsequently at home. Around 45 students isolating and no other positives yet.

Where do you live, OP? It's not outing yourself given that the school is huge & there are obviously dozens of cases.

We never heard about cases before March 2021. Since school reopened for all in March 2021, School has stated they had 3 or 4 staff who tested positive, and at least 3 kids who tested +. In a population pool of ~1600 people and over period > 2 weeks, doesn't seem like very many to me. DS had a classmate who shouted her thank you loud & publicly to the kid who tested + when their bubble got sent home.

No.

MarshaBradyo · 24/03/2021 19:51

None here.

what’s your case number like out of 100k?

lljkk · 24/03/2021 19:54

... DC school had 31 cases/100k in last week. The area population is also about 100k. So it is a lot if 3 of the area cases are linked to just one school. 3 kids in different year groups, rumour is that they are all siblings. Then doesn't seem like so clustered.

I have no idea. The school never tells us. Could be loads. Could be none. Or in between.

Every single case (3) at our local secondary school has turned out to be a false positive as a later pcr test has come back negative. Tests done in school are not allowed to be overridden by a pcr test so this has wiped out half of 3 year groups for no reason.
Friends school has had no positive results on their in school pcr tests but just had a false positive home test that has been overridden by a negative pcr test. Half the year off school for one day and back in the next!
I wonder if this is the cause for so many being off at your school OP?

Yes quite a few cases in our 1,000 secondary school (rural town) and about 50 isolating already (5% of all pupils). That was on Monday so It’s only been 2 weeks!

Bee2543 · 24/03/2021 20:37

No cases so far at all since they've been back. Aounds like we are very lucky. Good to know the LFT are working though!

ASchuylerSister · 24/03/2021 20:39

Similar size school to yours and 0 positives after 7000+ lft

And48 · 24/03/2021 20:46

Two positive cases that I know of. Not sure if these were from lft or pcr.

DoThePropeller · 24/03/2021 20:48

We had five in first week back, school of c2,000, none since then. Local rate is about 20/100,000.

PotteringAlong · 24/03/2021 20:48

We have had 5 positive cases so far (secondary) out of 1700 pupils. That’s in 4 different year groups.

Delatron · 24/03/2021 21:09

One positive on the first day back and zero since.

Afolnerd · 24/03/2021 22:47

Looks like we have been really unlucky.

lljkk we are on the south coast. 2 weeks ago we were 19 in 100k we are now on 43 in 100k. I think most of them must be in dd’s school.

The first week back we got emails everyday about new cases in your child’s year group though they seem to have stopped sending them now, but they are still sending more groups home. We have the whole of year 8 and about 60% of year 9 isolating at the moment.
