So despite cases surging in France of the SA variant, reported 2 days ago in The Times and brought up at PMQ today, Boris is going to wait and see about whether to bring in border restrictions.

If he follows usual form, he'll wait until one month after it's become the dominant strain in the UK and THEN impose restrictions and border testing.

You wonder what the point in the "red list" is.

Because we rely on haulage from France! It's simple enough banning tourists and insisting on hotel quarantine from far flung places arriving by plane but it's hundreds if not thousands daily from france via the ferries and tunnel. Lorry drivers may be crossing 2 or more times a week.

Personally I think the answer is to prioritise British based drivers for the vaccine literally tomorrow and inform eu haulage firms that from 1st April drivers need to be vaccinated or trailers sent unaccompanied. Airline crews are also an issue but can be vaccinated easily as far smaller numbers plus can stay on board flights for short haul

Boris Johnson was floundering this afternoon because he has very little grasp of detail. The red list is part of his dog whistle politics- do something so that some people think you have done something, but actually you have made very little difference.
