People on Instagram have got in a right tizz. But surely it's because of the day of reflection?

OP posts:

Would have thought so. Isn't it a year since the start of the first lockdown and the Sunday night broadcast?

A sad year, but light at the end of the tunnel due to the vaccine and reduction in cases, hospital admissions and deaths but prepare for some bumps in the road, ie in a couple of weeks they're going to be telling everyone who thinks they're going abroad at May half term that it's not happening.

HolmeH · 23/03/2021 14:54

This happens every week. It’s annoying. There are conferences every singe week & Boris is very commonly the host 🙄

WhentheDealGoesDown · 23/03/2021 15:26

I would have been surprised if he hadn't been on and would have thought it would have been a bit off considering it's been a year

PurpleDaisies · 23/03/2021 15:27

It’s a regular thing.
People need to unclench.

Yapplepearora · 23/03/2021 17:12

This will be one hell of a waffle. How ‘far’ we’ve come in a year, yet reminding us how shit everything still is and how much we need to continue to suffer for the greater good, but remember there’s a light at the end of the fucking tunnel folks

middleager · 23/03/2021 17:14

If I could bear to watch him, I'd get the Boris Bingo sheet ready.

antivariant · 23/03/2021 17:24

Would be a fitting day to properly apologise.
Shame we weren't marking 1 year since the first lockdown last week or two weeks ago. That would have saved a couple of tens of thousands of lives.
Same in December.

I’m just catching up with news of the press conference which I didn’t watch live. It’s reported that they’re saying if only they’d known at the start that Covid spread asymptomatically. I thought that here in the U.K. we did, or ought to have known that early on. One of our very first cases was a businessman called Steve Walsh who contracted the virus at a conference in Singapore and then managed to pass it on to family and friends during a ski holiday before returning to the U.K. Walsh says himself that he only got in touch with the authorities after his return to the U.K. not because he had any symptoms but because he found out that he’d had contact with a confirmed Covid case in Singapore. I do feel rather like history is being rewritten here.

CuthbertDibbleandGrubb · 23/03/2021 18:18

He was given far too easy a ride by the journalists. Lied by omission in his opening statement, dodged the question about homes abroad, refuses to accept that his inactions were wrong.

I don't want a public inquiry though, I want him facing criminal charges.

EmilyDickinson · 23/03/2021 18:24

Just to add to the Steve Walsh early Covid case information:

20-22 Jan 2020 contracts Covid at conference (no symptoms)

24-28 Jan 2020 ski holiday (no symptoms) infects I think 7 people

28 Jan - 6 Feb 2020 Back in England (no symptoms) infects 8 people

6 Feb 2020 Realised he’s had contact with a positive Covid case in Singapore. Contacts GP. Tests positive. Put in isolation in hospital

11/12 Feb 2020 discharged.

How much clearer or earlier could the evidence of asymptomatic transmission be?

harridan50 · 23/03/2021 18:30

Really avoid watching these now it just numbs me I really cannot absorb anymore I just catch up on the main points if there are any

Tbf he did right to ignore the homes abroad comment.

The journalist was clearly having a dig at his dads second home and it's ridiculous to ask if he recommends everyone that wants a foreign holiday buys a holiday home abroad.

If the journalists could show some ability to communicate effectively and ask clear questions that can't be dodged we'd also get better answers.

Boris is a champion dodgeball player with regards questions and being sarcastic when asking them just gives him more freedom to avoid.

Asymptomatic transmission was known about before Steve Walsh did his thing. Many of the early research papers on covid, published in January talked about it.

What the government/SAGE mean when they say they didn't know, is they were told but chose to disbelieve it because it didn't fit with their antiquated understanding of how diseases work - that's despite it being known for decades that both flu and colds are transmittable before symptoms show.

BonnieDundee · 23/03/2021 19:14

He managed to drop in at least one "alas"

HSHorror · 23/03/2021 19:28

More likely they were slowing the spread not stop.
But also they wanted everyone infected before they could realise how bad it would be

EmilyDickinson · 23/03/2021 19:54

notrub I agree. But after the Steve Walsh case, which received extraordinary press coverage anyone who watched the news or read the papers would have seen a clear demonstration of asymptomatic transmission. There’s simply no way Boris can possibly claim he didn’t know. The absolute bare faced lying infuriates me.
