Summer holidays abroad?

TheRedBalloon · 20/03/2021 11:08

I've just been reading that various Sage members have said international travel is unlikely this Summer.
We booked our holiday for the end of July to the Canaries (booked it last Summer.) Just wondering has anyone else booked for abroad and still expects to go, or is it more likely to be cancelled? DH and I have both had our first jabs and will have had both in May/June. We booked through TUI so I know we'll get a refund but the thought of going away has kept me going through lockdown!

(I know this is trivial compared with the illnesses / deaths due to the pandemic)

I have three children and have never felt guilty about their impact on the environment?!

Your children will be the ones suffering, not you.

Meanwhile, one of the most prominent stories on the BBC website seems to be sowing the seeds for postponement of the 17 May 'you're allowed to go abroad again' relaxation.

We went nowhere last year and won't be surprised if we go nowhere this year. We'll see what it looks like for September later in the year.

Whenspringcomes · 21/03/2021 11:57

My parents are booked to come to see and stay with us in July and August, they’ve had their first vaccination and will have had second fairly soon. What do you think the chances are? We’re in Portugal.

But my word they’d have had some fabulous sunny foreign holidays to reminisce about! Grin

@Zig4zag

May17th. I think, you are unclear on what I meant by minute booking. I interpret last minute booking as you have already got the time if work and you just book the flights and hotel closer the time to going. All open, all good Still restriction, spend your holiday at home. I have to book holiday in advance too.
Did you miss the part where I said my hotel was unaffordable?

I book package holidays. Not that’s it’s any of your business assuming that I book my hotel and flights separately. I only did that for some where like DLP.

You don’t know my circumstances so mind your own business.

Sounds miserable! Your lectures and asceticism still won't effect anyone in how they live their lives.

Maybe not but at least I'll be able to look my son in the eye when he's older and tell him I did my best.

And our life isn't miserable. We are a very happy family. & luckily not dependent on the weather to enjoy ourselves either.

Do you think I won’t be able to look my son in the eyes? Lol.

I’ve given him so many wonderful memories and life experiences, I have no issues with eye contact.

And what if your son has more than one child? Commutes to work? Enjoys annual foreign holidays using air travel?

I doubt the two of you will be talking, let alone looking one another in the eyes

My children have been used to going abroad each summer holiday but last year we went to Devon instead

Likewise, but Cornwall. My DC have been on road trips in Australia, around Iceland for 10 days, and had loads of holidays in Thailand, but Cornwall was their favourite. We went to Stonehenge on the way, followed the King Aurthur trail, went to St. Michaels Mount, The Eden Project, ate in great restaurants and did a survey of the best icecream, went surfing, went out on a boat, visited fishing villages, sunbathed on beaches and on the way back went to see the Magna Carta in Sailsbury Cathedral.

Hardly a sh!t holiday was it?

Children generally prefer British bucket and spade beaches. A lot of the so called beautiful beaches are usually too hot for them to play on.
You end up spending all your time huddled under the sun umbrella and worrying whether they'll get burnt.

@likeamillpond

The whining about covid is mainly about the same two things

My life is ruined!
I can't go abroad!
I can't go to concerts!
Really?
Ffs what is it with Brits and this obsession with having to go abroad every year? confused
Holidays Abroad only came into being for the masses roughly 50 years ago.

How fucking dare you? I haven't "whined". I don't have close family. I have a good friendship network and an effective support bubble. I'm able to work. I realise I'm privileged. But I miss my friends abroad. I simply want clarification on whether or not it will be possible to travel.
Kpbffyjjgfi · 21/03/2021 12:57

We have 2 weeks all inclusive in a tui family hotel in Spain booked for August that has already been amended 4 times since 2019.
I 100% would not have booked anything this year through choice. I would like to go away if possible, and my husband and I will have both had both vaccinations by then but obviously the kids won't have.
I don't feel too nervous about the plane because its only 2 hours and I'm happy to wear a mask in the airport etc (used to it now).
But..... What will the situation in the hotel be like? Thousands of adults and kids crammed together around the pool? Will the entertainment still be on? We specifically chose the hotel because of the day and night entertainment programme and pool parties etc for the kids. I cannot see how any of that will be possible so there's no point in us going really.

willibald · 21/03/2021 13:00

We go on cruises, Lentil Grin. Can't wait to sail again.

Totallyfedup1979 · 21/03/2021 13:07

Oh I love a cruise! Bahamas mainly.
Have you done a Disney Cruise? Wonderful :)

EasterIssland · 21/03/2021 13:35

What’s wrong with British people that feel so entitled to tell others how do we have to spend our time off and money ! Mind your own business ! Just because your kids like a British beach ... doesn’t mean other kids will. Please stop being so patronising and treating us like kids ... if we want to go abroad and we can we will. You can stay here,

Im up for that Bahamas cruise ! Is there a mumsnet discount ?

Exactly!

Cruise sounds fabulous. I love the Bahamas, too.

Hear hear. Some people on this thread need to calm their shit down.
EasterIssland · 21/03/2021 13:56

I’ll only calm down when I’m on my cruise around the Bahamas Grin til then I’ll moan

Stokey · 21/03/2021 14:00

We've booked a holiday in Greece for this year. I don't know why people are getting so upset about it. If the restrictions are lifted, we'll go, if they aren't, we'll transfer the booking to next year. I don't really get how booking a holiday itself is irresponsible? And why it upsets people so much? If all adults are vaccinated by then (August) how does my going on holiday hurt you?

We looked at risk factors and decided to book SC rather than hotel so we wouldn't be dealing with lots of people, likewise we booked somewhere we can fly directly to rather than fly and ferry.

ilovesooty · 21/03/2021 14:02

@SoundOfFalsetto

It seems that people are hell-bent on going abroad this year. If so, at the very least they should be made to quarantine on the way back for however many days that is, at their own expense.
If the law by any chance does permit travel abroad this year I had already decided to isolate on return whether required to do so or not. I also realise I'm fortunate to be able to choose to do that. However it seems likely that I won't be going anywhere.

I suspect the irony of getting upset because someone is saying you can't do this or that, whilst at the same time telling them what they can or can't say is lost on most of the posters on this thread (and society in general by all accounts).
notveryhappyhere · 21/03/2021 14:04

Bit gutted about no foreign holidays this year. But let’s face it, it’s a luxury not an essential. I think we’re just going to have to get in with it at home this year. It’s fine to be disappointed though. I was holding out for an October /Christmas but even that looks doubtful.

Foreign travel has become so common place. We’re going up need to readjust our thinking. It’s a shame for those with family abroad.

At least you southerners get a summer, feel sorry for us Scots Grin

CheltenhamLady · 21/03/2021 14:42

I think that if you can afford to travel it isn't viewed as a luxury, more the norm. Therefore, when your norm is disrupted you feel down about it. Those are valid feelings.

I am feeling a bit miserable today because I can see my May Greece holiday slipping away. We do have others booked, but for us, the UK is a few days stopgap holiday due to the weather issues. I will be so upset if we can't travel abroad this year.

I don't care who doesn't like that, that is how I feel and I simply will not apologise for it.

Cantstandsmugness · 21/03/2021 14:44

Wow - this thread is great, breaks up the Sunday boredom.

I love to travel and see different cities and cultures, I’m not a two week AI person but understand the reason people love these, two weeks down time from stressful lives. I also will be on the first flight I am able to take out of the monot

Cantstandsmugness · 21/03/2021 14:47

Pressed wrong button
Monotony of lock down life.

But I just want to throw out there ....

Covid is survival of the fittest - natures way - there are too many people on this planet.........its ecology
Nobody knows if the vaccines will work against new strains which will evolve and we cant be locked up forever. I’ll take my chances and get my tin hat ready!!
