Holidays Abroad with unvaccinated kids

If countries will only accept vaccinated people, does that mean no families can holiday abroadConfused?

@Lemons1571

I was about to ask the same question. Surely not many families are going to press ahead, not when the whole holiday relies on the kids testing negative one day before you leave. All the planning and packing, the effort, and it could all fall apart 24 hours before you set off Confused.

Or worse, not being allowed back into the uk if one of the kids tests positive on the way back. Then it’s 2k on a quarantine hotel, and one lucky parent gets to stay with the kids in a hotel room, missing work, for 10 days.

How many people are seriously going to risk that?

My thoughts exactly....

Plus the cost involved in tests both ways and possible hotel quarantine.

For travel BY EU citizens among the EU nations
Is it me or does it seem weird that this doesn't include us any more?

bechr · 18/03/2021 23:29

It does all sound a bit of a hassle doesn’t it. I can’t see the fun in having kids and possibly self tested a day before travel and then again when coming back, not to mention the costs.

Twoforthree · 18/03/2021 23:36

Will they accept only one jab, or will you need to have had both?

Both
Lollipop888 · 18/03/2021 23:53

How does the testing work for holidays, is it booked separately to the ones you go to when you have symptoms? Is it still quite expensive? How do you get tested while away in order to come home?

Of course. The symptom ones are for those that are ill. You have to pay for a private pcr. When away some hotels will help providing the pcr other places you search where is the closest place to get it done
MaxNormal · 19/03/2021 07:05

I suspect that some countries or airlines will include a pcr test for free if you book to visit them.
Tourism is a huge part of the economy for many countries and they are desperate not to lose another season.

Who would want to travel abroad generally This year? It’s not a good idea at all, individually or at a community level
Actually I would quite like to see my family abroad as I have not seen them for over a year now. DPs are not getting any younger and the longer this goes on the more I feel my chance of time with them is slipping away. If there is an opportunity to travel this year and if it's safe for them having been vaccinated, I'm willing to jump through all the required hoops to see them.
Parker231 · 19/03/2021 07:10

I’ve not seen anything about the the proposed EU vaccine passport which includes non EU states?

QuentinInQuarantino · 19/03/2021 07:11

At the moment, it seems the most prohibitive part is the return to the UK. You have to show a -ve test when you arrive PLUS the receipt for the two more you've bought for days 2 and 8 of your 10 day quarantine. Presuming you've had to have another test to enter your destination country that's 4 tests per traveler at a cost of £400 each.

I'm interested to know when this restriction will be lifted, and whether it will only be restricted for those who've had vaccines, one or both etc.

ChameleonClara · 19/03/2021 07:16
  1. the bigger issue is adults will have only had one jab so won't class as 'vaccinated'

  2. I don't want to expose my unvaccinated children to more risk than is necessary tbh, so travel with them isn't appealing

MaxNormal · 19/03/2021 07:17

Individual countries are allowed to make bilateral agreements with non EU counties and several eg Portugal and Greece have already indicated they are keen to do so.

BigBamboo · 19/03/2021 07:31

Children aren’t immune from Covid. Why on earth would you take them from the UK, where we are making strides in our vaccine program and soon it will be in retreat, to a place which is on the cusp of a 3rd wave? What utter madness.

Racoonworld · 19/03/2021 07:36

Anyone else predict a lot of stranded brits abroad when they have gone on holiday and forgot/not realised that they needed to arrange in advance a PCR test before flying back to the UK? I can imagine the news headlines now.

Yep and i think future travel to europe is going to be a shock to many in the UK.

Johnson has said there won't be a UK vaccine travel passport and we wont be part of any EU scheme (though he is hoping we can join the Trans Pacific vaccine passport one)

Why holiday abroad though, is my question. Everything is still uncertain, and travel industries are struggling in UK too. Unless there's reasons like visiting families, I don't understand the motive of want to go abroad now when there's plenty of great places to visit within UK, if travelling is allowed.

Weather I imagine would be one reason. The British summer is far from reliable and it's pretty miserable if it rains for a fortnight.

Can you tell me where I can see glaciars and waterfalls and mountains and eat different food and see different temples and mix other cultures or get on the water and not feel frozen in this country please ?

And yes the tourism economy in this country is bad at the moment. But I refuse to pay 200+ a night because of it. They can use my taxes to help the economy instead of their own pockets

LadyCatStark · 19/03/2021 08:49

@minniemoocher

Who knows? Though Greece has indicated it will be vaccine or two negative tests. Remember that contrary to what you would think sometimes here, many people don't have kids! We are booked for Italy and will have had both vaccines over two month before our departure date (50&58) so even younger adults should have a chance
Well that’s bloody brilliant for the kids isn’t it! They’ve lost a year of their childhood to protect others and now all those people can go on holiday because they’ve had the vaccine but they can’t because they’re not entitled to it. Oh well as long as all the child free people can enjoy their holiday eh?

Spending 2 grand to sit in a different house and watch the rain seems like a huge waste of money to me!
BigBamboo · 19/03/2021 08:53

I’ve done a few UK holidays and they were actually better than many of the holidays I’ve had overseas and I am a very seasoned traveller. You just need to do a bit of research to make it amazing. My uk holiday this summer is jam packed with mountains, waterfalls, a whirlpool, island hopping, some of the best beaches in Europe, staying in a castle, a visit to a top restaurant and loads more. You just need Google and a bit of imagination.

HazeyJaneII · 19/03/2021 08:54

A paediatric vaccine programme should be rolled out from the end of this year - so hopefully it shouldn't be too much longer.

TheExtraGuineaPig · 19/03/2021 09:19

The situation could be so different by June/July that the weighing up of risks vs benefits for both travellers and the countries they go to will mean completely different policies.

I imagine (hope) it will be very possible to travel abroad this summer - though not freely to every country as all will have different situations. I guess there will be a revision of the travel corridor situation with the vaccinated having no problems and the rest of us with some sort of light testing requirement. The restrictions have to reflect the actual situation - not a hypothetical strain that could hypothetically jump the vaccine- especially if hospitalisations and deaths are low.

And on the other hand if the situation worsens then the restrictions will continue.
