Will lots just say 'stuff it' come the 23rd?

It'll soon be a year since lockdown was first called and me and DH have been watching lots of TV coverage over the last few days. It's just dawned on us this week that we have now not seen our parents for a year, the DC haven't hugged their grandparents, we haven't been for any days out as a family, DC1 hasn't had a single uni class in person. The list goes on.

DH and I are now quickly coming to the conclusion that we just cannot and will not go on living like this any longer as a family. Particularly when there seems to be no end in sight if you listen to people like Chris Whitty and Christina Pagel (who was wanting masks and social distancing for the foreseeable future last night on the news).

Both sets of parents are in their mid 60s and have been vaccinated. We are now strongly minded to visit both at the beginning of April and allow them to see their DGC.

I suspect we will not be alone. Will lots of people simply say 'no more' upon realising they've spent a year of their lives not living?

I hope not. It's bad enough the government have made mistakes at every opportunity, without the public now doing the same

@KOKOagainandagain great post!! You definitely must have a scientific background as you say very similar things as my brother who is very well studied in science. Xx

Haven’t RTFT

Me and my husband have worked throughout so life hasn’t really changed in that respect. My dad is my bubble so I’ve seen him loads, as have the children. My son has been in school throughout too so that hadn’t changed either.

This time last year, life felt very different but now, I don’t know....life just feels normal. Apart from the masks of course.

There is an enclosed park directly outside my son’s school and after pick up tonight there were easily 40 children in there, along with one of their parents. There’s also a football court and again, about 20+ children in there, from different age groups, all hustling and bustling around each other.

Many, many parents congregating and chatting - no masks and no social distancing.

People have had enough now.

I’ve seen my grandparents once in the last year, they’re vaccinated and so am I, so yes I am tempted to go and visit them. The same with my mom.

How will those of you slavishly following the rules in blind faith feel when Whitty decrees those rules must stay in place this year, next year....

Yawn. Same old same old from @Beaniecats, who hates Chris Whitty because his wicked plan is to keep the whole nation in lockdown purely to stop Beanie from going to the cinema. Interspersed with their other favourite post “there will be riots” which they’ve now been predicting for weeks, which haven’t happened and which they’ve clearly no intention of going on themselves...

It will be interesting to look back in a few years as I think it will be very clear Whitty had his own agenda all along

I’m hoping in a few years I’ll be getting on with my life. In fact, I’m hoping I’ll be getting on with my life in a few weeks, I just don’t feel the need to make such a song and dance about it as some on here.

Yep, beanie won't have a clue what to prattle on about then......
MummyPop00 · 12/03/2021 22:50

Be interesting what people’s reaction to a new fast spreading variant largely evasive of the vaccines would be at this stage if one arose, just as people are psychologically preparing for comparative freedom?

No doubt they’d still be the ‘lockdown as long as necessary’ lot, but I would suggest, as long as Covid’s IFR remains similar, support could start crumbing away more quickly, not to mention the government can’t finance this kind of economic life support forever.

I think it’s sh*t or bust time basically.

Mammyofonlyone · 13/03/2021 06:40

@MrsHerculePoirot

We are. As are all our friends and family. Perhaps I just don’t make friends with selfish twats though.
Same here. Well said

ineedaholidaynow · 13/03/2021 08:31

@GintyMcGinty will you carry on with all your socialising once the children are back at school?

WitchesBritchesPumpkinPants · 13/03/2021 08:57
@WitchesBritchesPumpkinPants in which case at what point do you think we should start being able to socialise indoors? We will not attain zero covid so going by your argument should we be locked down forever? I’m perfectly happy to go with a less than 1 in 10,000 chance that the person I’m chatting to inside has covid. What levels would make you feel that it is “safe”?
@Snookie00

You said

How are we going to catch and spread a disease that almost no one has?

I said, in the same way one person brought it to the U.K. & spread it.

It's now more transmissible and at 6000 cases per day, some areas still at over 600/100,000 numbers could still easily get out of control.

Schools have only just gone back. Give it time to see how that changes things.

There's a slow, phased, lifting of restrictions - why can you not just stick with that? Why do you want to rush back into everything risking numbers escalating, possibly causing a vaccine evading variant & forcing another lockdown

I didn't say zero cases, but 6000 is a long way from zero.

LawrenceChaney · 13/03/2021 09:07

I don't agree with the fact that some posters on here are being labelled selfish etc. Because they have taken the decision to see their vaccinated families now. Come on, it's been a year . It's a bloody huge ask to expect people to not see their loved ones for so long.
I understand that some people are angry but let's not try and make other people feel bad for doing something that's perfectly reasonable.

LawrenceChaney · 13/03/2021 09:11

Have some compassion, and recognise that it's not "just because they can't go to the pub." Can't believe that is still being trotted out.
It's because their social and wellbeing outlets have vanished. Yes, the virus is still around but it doesn't mean we aren't allowed to miss the pub, hairdressers, gym etc.
"just be patient" doesn't cut it anymore. It's been a year.
Did you know that UK and Ireland are amongst the only countries in the world who have outlawed households mixing?
Just because some of you are finding it easy to still adhere to strict lockdown rules, it doesn't mean everyone is. Labelling them selfish twats only makes you look bitter.

Nerdygirl · 13/03/2021 09:22

Great post @LawrenceChaney

I cannot believe the lack of compassion on here and the pitch fork approach to anything people don’t agree with. There is also a lack of critical thinking and questioning in my opinion . It’s ok to question the narrative and ask questions like what’s the point of testing school kids then making then wear masks? And why are scientists saying masks and social distancing will still exist even when vaccination programme will have addressed the majority? And why are drugs that are proven effective in treating covid dismissed and only vaccines will do? ....
Talking about these things, being pragmatic about the level of risk seems to be missing!

BlackbirdOtto · 13/03/2021 09:30

Most people are selfish they don’t care about other people eg school staff or the NHS. The hypocrisy of all the rainbows and clapping!!! A few more months of keeping to the rules but no they are too thick to see past the end of their own noses.

UntamedWisteria · 13/03/2021 09:32

Going to visit your elderly parents, when both you and they have been vaccinated, and you haven't seen them for months = fine

Having the neighbours families round for a pissup in the garden = not fine

Most people should be capable of making a sensible risk assessment and acting accordingly.

bringmelaughter · 13/03/2021 09:47

People have such short memories. Some people felt they’d done enough and ‘deserved Christmas’. That went really well and NHS staff got to pick up the pieces of that for the first three months of this year.

“Whitty” as some people refer to Prof Chris Whitty, has seen first hand the results of Covid as he continues to work on the wards. I suspect his ‘agenda’, as it’s been described in this thread, is driven by his first hand experiences & knowledge unlike the agendas of those who think it’s ok to say ‘fuck it’.

So you're accepting he doesn't have a rational view then? He is obsessed by covid
ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 13/03/2021 09:56

What sort of agenda could an impartial doctor possibly have? Why would Whitty even have an agenda?😁

Exactly, the chances of catching it are minuscule

Except we have the Kent variant now. Which transmits much faster.

No one knew who he was until covid came along of course he's enjoying it. Its given him power. And I wouldn't take any notice of his variant scaremongering either He is not fit to be in post. Is he addressing any other issues? No, he is fixated on covid
ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 13/03/2021 10:11

Yeah right🙄

bringmelaughter · 13/03/2021 10:11

Just wondering in what other area you think that experience of an issue is a problem rather than a benefit @Beaniecats?

I love this! As people are really well aware beaniecats is all over the “covid is fake” boards and saying no one dies from it and is mild, but then was all over the vaccine boards demanding her vaccine, hounding her GP for it and saying she needed it..... for a mild illness that doesn’t kill you. Proper amaze balls thinking.
HedgeOwl · 13/03/2021 10:16

Oh and thank you to Whitty to being obsessed with covid. That’s the mans job. To be obsessed with it, live and breathe it, to save as many lives as possible. Thank you to him for being obsessed. So we need someone who doesn’t have a shit leading?
