Burst Bubble Already

Posting for reassurance really. I work in a school and we've lost a class/bubble today (on Day 2) due to a positive case. Is this really unusual?
I blinking hope so as wasn't expecting it to happen THIS early. It was a LF test so praying it's down to unreliability. We're obviously all hoping the PCR is negative and they might be able to come back. Not worried about myself (had vaccine) - just desperately don't want to see our poor kids' education disrupted any more. Also, it's a special school so especially hard on the families too... 😕

We 've lost a group of Y11s. Heartbreaking.
However they are all joining un the live classroom lessons from home a d will hopefully keep engaged sufficiently to keep up until they can come bsck in.

We lost over 40 pupils yesterday. Year 11.

@MonsterKidz

False positives on lateral flow is approx 1 in 1000.
Yes, so for a school with 1000 pupils the odds of having at least one false positive in a round are ~67% in case of universal testing.

DH is a teacher and tested positive Friday - leading to everyone in 2 year groups to be sent home to isolate(this is in Primary in a smallish school, and the year groups are mixed classes e.g. Year 1/2 class so both year groups together are a bubble).

We've had to keep DC off school obviously whilst we are in isolation due to DH. When opening email to email school to report this, I saw an email from DC school noting that their Year 5 bubble has burst due to a postive result on Saturday.

I think we'll see this a lot. Most teachers aren't vaccinated. No kids are vaccinated. Yet they're all forced to mingle together in a small room....

It's really very disgusting that this gov failed to put any measures in place to protect kids and teachers in schools, despite having suggestions and evidence presented to them for a year now.

@Orchidflower1

My understanding that getting false positives is very rare with the LFT so I’d brace yourself for a positive pcr test.

My health visitor friend said they work on the same principles as a pregnancy test- unlikely to get a false positive but occasionally can get a false negative.

When prevalence of the virus is low the false positives are higher....worth reading the above if youre interested.

Year 2 on Wednesday. Staff not sent home though...

Got a message at 7pm Sunday to burst our year 1 bubble. Lunchtime supervisor so she's off, thankfully she only does yr1. Her partner also a lunchtime supervisor so he's off but hoping he doesn't treat positive. Daughters bubble burst just before half term so looks like it might have been passed via asymptomatic daughter.

It's a real shame this is happening esp so early on .. the poor children 🥲

We had some year 11's only 7 have to isolate

middleager · 16/03/2021 13:15

Yes, one of our secondaries has already reported a few positives.

Of course this will happen. U vaccinated people in small, u ventilated spaces all day.

middleager · 16/03/2021 13:15
