Quick vaccine questions from an emetophobe

Subordinatethatclause · 07/03/2021 11:41

Will definitely have the vaccine when offered BUT trying to prepare myself psychologically...

If you've had the vaccine could you answer these questions for me?

  1. Did you feel nauseous afterwards?
  2. Were you actually sick?
  3. Did you have diarrhoea?
  4. If yes to any of the above, how long did it last?

Thank you x

I had the AZ vaccine Friday (yay, so grateful!)
I was fine on Fri but felt faint in the shower yesterday morning, went straight back to bed dripping wet and slept for 2hrs! I had aching joints and spent the rest of the day on the sofa watching TV.
Woke this morning feeling really wonderful and ready to face the day.
I started my period yesterday so I can't be sure if it was vaccine side effects or period cramping that caused the faint feeling. No nausea, more a feeling of got to lie down and close eyes to stop a swimming feeling.
Can I just say to anyone scared of needles - this vaccination is the least pain I've ever felt with a needle. Hardly felt it go in and much less so than the flu vax. No bruising or red mark either - it was really competently done.
So grateful to have had it done. The relief that will come with some protection in a few weeks time far outweighs any minor and temporary side effects, I promise you.

LApprentiSorcier · 07/03/2021 12:14

Felt a little bit sick the second morning after my vaccine, but nowhere near actually vomiting. It soon passed off.

whataballbag · 07/03/2021 12:18

I had mine, and I'm an emetophobe.

Felt slightly sick a few hours after but I honestly think that was just anxiety. Didn't feel like I was going to be sick at all but just a bit sickly.

Next day flu like symptoms, no sickness nausea or diarrhoea at all

Thimbleberries · 07/03/2021 12:47

I had Pfizer. And no, to all your questions.

I had a red itchy patch over the vaccine site, and that was it. Maybe a little tired. No sickness, nausea etc. at all.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 07/03/2021 13:45

dh and I have had Oxford. I had very little in the way of side effects. dh felt a bit achy and shivery that evening with a mild headache. It didn't change his appetite at all though.

slooowdaysinlockdown · 07/03/2021 13:47

No nausea at all xx

Allmyarseandpeggymartin · 07/03/2021 15:00

I had the AZ yesterday, I felt feverish last night and achy today but absolutely no digestive issues. I just don’t think it effects people like that op.

I’m so grateful to have had it done.

Subordinatethatclause · 07/03/2021 15:08

@Allmyarseandpeggymartin From these responses it seems like it may well be less that the ´common' 1 in 10 side effects listed on the NHS website 😌.

Thanks x

My son was pretty rough with it, he’s 16 and I think younger people often get more side effects. He was hot / cold (no temp), headache, shivers, tired and bad nausea. But he wasn’t sick and no diarrhoea.
Side effects started about 6 hours after vaccine, got steadily worse for about 5 hours, the started to improve. He was totally back to normal within 48 hours, but the last 24 were mainly tiredness.
He was quite poorly but no vomiting!

Flev · 07/03/2021 15:38

No, no and no!

I had a sore arm, I was tired and achy for a day but nothing along the nausea/diarrhoea lines at all.

trevthecat · 07/03/2021 15:43

I didn't have any of those side effects

user1460571583 · 07/03/2021 15:45

I am emetophobic too and was on here 3 weeks ago as I was due to have the astrazeneca jab and was also terrified. I had the jab and was very fluey the next day and still very tired on the Monday, but I had no nausea or vomiting at all. I'm so glad I had it done and I understand your worries but I'm sure you will be fine.

LizzyELane · 07/03/2021 15:56

I'm emetophobic and needle phobic. Had Pfizer jab 8 days ago. No side effects at all and didn't feel the needle go in, which I still keep thinking how can that be possible!

BIWI · 07/03/2021 15:59

I had the Oxford Astra Zeneca jab, just over 3 weeks ago now.

1. Did you feel nauseous afterwards?
No. Not in the slightest.

2. Were you actually sick?
No.

3. Did you have diarrhoea?
No.

DH had the Pfizer jab almost two weeks ago now, and he didn't have any of these side effects either.

Essexgirlupnorth · 07/03/2021 16:01

No sickness only had a few sore arm

Downthefarm · 07/03/2021 16:06

No. Not at all.

alreadytaken · 07/03/2021 16:12

Know a lot of people who have been vaccinated and most had no more than a sore arm. None has been sick.

Worrysaboutalot · 07/03/2021 16:16
  1. No
  2. No
  3. No (well no more than usually as I have a bowel condition)
  4. n/a

I didn't even feel the needle! Just had a sore arm and was very tired for a couple of days. The protection is worth having.

Blueberrycreampie · 07/03/2021 16:17

I felt a bit tired, had a stiff neck and felt a bit cold for a day or two but no nausea!

Crunchymum · 07/03/2021 16:21

Fellow sufferer here although I've has a massive remission in lockdown (only positive thing to come out of it to be honest!!) and it didn't even occur to me when I had my jab.

To be honest I wasn't actually aware of the 15 minute wait afterwards (my phobia is mainly about other people vomiting) but had I over thought it, I could have been quite anxious.

As sickness isn't a common side effect I think I'll be fine for second jab as well.

Best of luck when your turn comes.

Subordinatethatclause · 07/03/2021 16:25

Thanks all.

@Crunchymum The NHS lists nausea as very common and vomming as common side effects 😱

HandyBendySandy · 07/03/2021 16:30

Fellow emetophobe here - but I'm actually more interested in the citalopram mentioned by @TrunkintheJunk!

I've taken lofepramine for the phobia for 20 years, it helps me manage it - I had a verrrrrry minor wobble about the vaccine but not enough to stop me having it, I'll go along when it's my turn.

Wonder whether to give citalopram a try though ...

WitchesBritchesPumpkinPants · 07/03/2021 16:32

@Subordinatethatclause

Thanks all.

I had AZ & I did feel a bit nauseous, but only a bit like car sick/woozy not like I was actually going to be sick at any stage. I'm a little prone to it anyway.

I know quite a few people who have had AZ now and with varying side effects, to varying degrees. But not one of them had been sick or felt like they might be & none have felt any side effects until hours/day/days later.

No 'tail end' issues either.

Try not to worry!

Confuzzlediddled · 07/03/2021 17:39

I had Pfizer, had the worst headache in the world and slept for 2 days, no nausea or vomiting.
Needle phobic DH had his yesterday (Oxford) and has chills and a headache, currently in bed but again no nausea or vomiting. He said it was nowhere as bad as he feared.

TrunkintheJunk · 07/03/2021 17:41

@HandyBendySandy I started citalopram because if anxiety and depression after several major events in my life. I’d had the phobia since I was a young child. I was suddenly able to clean up after DS were sick, hold buckets under them when they were sick. It was only after the first time I did it(without thinking!) that I was like ‘oh lord, what did I just do?!’ It was an incredible bonus from taking the citalopram. I started in 10mg and now I tale 20mg every day. It’s been the best thing I’ve ever done, and I’ll never stop taking them
