"Just stick to the rules for a bit longer"

Am I the only one getting sick of hearing this?

We're a year in. As of May, when household mixing is allowed, I won't have legally seen my partner indoors for seven months. Same with my sister, who is preparing to go back to teaching 4 x 30 different groups of teenagers everyday.

It's just so restrictive. I follow the rules as much as I can, but not as much admittedly as my mental health has taken a battering- I was supposed to have a psychiatrist appointment this morning on the phone and they never called me, so now I feel even worse.

I get it's a shit situation. But how long are we going to be asked to do this for? What if the vaccines hadn't worked?

I KNOW I'm just ranting (probably as a result of waiting months to be seen by a psychiatrist who apparently got to phone me) but when other countries with higher rates are allowing household mixing of some
form, even if limited, it just makes me so down. I'd LOVE the rule of six or two households.

I suppose I'd even be so controversial to say that I don't think the government has the right to ban household mixing for almost a year and that it's an overstep and gone on too long, but I guess that makes me "anti-lockdown" and a "covid denier" by some some people's standards

Public compliance is shrinking because of selfish people that cant be bothered anymore and dont care enough

People are selfish. Everyone is selfish. Unless you've sold your house and donated your salary to save starving babies in Africa, you're selfish too Smile

People so hell bent on accusing others of selfishness usually do it for their own selfish reasons.

IrishMamaMia · 04/03/2021 10:44

Public compliance is shrinking because its been a year, the virus isn't a risk to most people AND the vulnerable are almost fully vaccinated.

Iremembertheelderlykoreanlady · 04/03/2021 10:45

the Brazil variant is much more transmissible than the original, also not susceptible to the vaccine.

You've missed off the very important "maybe" and "could" from that statement.

No evidence yet that is the case.

Nah, sorry, people might have bought that 6 months ago but not anymore. It isn't selfish to want to see family, operate a business, earn money, feed your kids. You can take your "selfish people" and get in the sea.

I'm seeing my parents regularly now and have been seeing other family members.

Some people are just enjoying this.

Talkwhilstyouwalk · 04/03/2021 10:50

Now there is a vaccine and the elderly and vulnerable have had it it's time to carry on as normal. The mental health costs of lockdown are too high not to.

peak2021 · 04/03/2021 11:54

I'm not sick of hearing this. I would like politicians to set an example and not have spurious and unnecessary business trips. Mr Johnson went to Stoke on Trent for things he could have seen in Streatham or South Kensington, for example.

Exactly. How many people are we indirectly murdering from fast fashion, driving, plastic bottles etc?

I only really care about my family and close friends, like most people I imagine! I try to minimise harm to others, I wear a face mask (only when I have to) and try to minimise my impact on the environment.

You can see how selfish you are here: www.footprintcalculator.org/

Snowrabbit · 04/03/2021 12:54

YANBU. Living in Scotland and seeing the government's new tier system made me so angry and frustrated (even harder to move into lower tiers now - once we go into tiers again) The restrictions have become unbearable and are definitely an overreach. It's become politically incorrect to challenge it.

GreenWheat · 04/03/2021 14:02

The thing is, whatever the pathway out of lockdown, there will always be people who think we should wait longer. Ditto those who think it should be sooner.

Dowser · 04/03/2021 14:13

@PlantPlant123

Lucille- I accepted it at first, I understand it was an unprecedented situation. But now it seems insane. And no one I know seems to follow it at all.

I'm almost glad when I see my student neighbours having people over and living

Durham was lovely a couple of weeks ago when temps were good and it was full of people enjoying the weather Lovely seeing the young people, their beautiful young faces, just enjoying meeting up with their friends Was a great tonic

Always have done..don’t know anyone who hasnt
Dowser · 04/03/2021 14:16

@Racoonworld

I agree with you. The ongoing rules are not fair or proportionate a year in. I’m done with it, my in-laws are coming to stay next week.
Good for you. Everyone should make their own risk assessments
Delatron · 04/03/2021 14:19

Yep I think we should all be making our own risk assessments especially with vaccinated family.

I’m having an argument on another thread about this! Pleased the tide is turning.
Don’t kill granny doesn’t wash anymore.

QuidditchQueen · 04/03/2021 14:29

The vaccines are working-it is only a few die-hard clingers on to lockdown who continue to clamour for it to continue. They are very vocal on here but in RL people are much saner.

Buzzinwithbez · 04/03/2021 14:59

In our area we are down to June figures
-andd yet we done even have rule of six outside ( which is crap for families anyway) until the end of the month?

wanderings · 04/03/2021 17:56

Reiterating what others have said above, Saint Boris and his merry men have subjected us to the following:

"It's just for three weeks to flatten the curve."
"We can turn this virus around in twelve weeks." (Now close to fifty and counting.)
"We have to squeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeze the brakes."
"Normalish by Christmas."
"It would be inhumane to cancel Christmas."
"Have yourself a merry little Christmas, because I've cancelled it, even though I said it would be inhumane."
"Significant normality by Easter, see your families then." (Now effectively cancelled for the second time.)

What will it be on June 21st? Saint Boris appearing three hours late for his press conference, saying "Pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeease be patient, look me in the eyes while I tell you I dosed you all with the placebo vaccine, instead of the real one, I'm trooooooooooooooooly sorry for this, I'm asking you to stick to the rules for just a bit longer, just another year, pleeeeeeeeeease, pretty pleeeeeeeeeeease....."

We have been gaslighted into accepting this madness for "just a bit longer", "just a bit longer," "just a bit longer" for sooooo long now, it is fucking ridiculous. Yes, we have vaccines, after the government told us they were ineffective at preventing transmission, followed by a U-turn, just like they told us masks are useless, followed by a U-turn; they told us "schools are safe"; then on the same day, they closed them. We just don't know what to believe any more, because of the total conflicting drivel that comes from Saint Boris and his merry men week in, week out.

ThornAmongstRoses · 04/03/2021 18:04

I’m with you OP, it’s just madness.

Life has got to return to normal now, it just has.

People are being vaccinated, there’s nothing else that can be done so let us just get on with our lives.

I’m very fortunate that I’ve worked throughout so can get out from inside my 4 walls, I get to socialise and meet new people so I don’t feel too suffocated by the restrictions.....I can’t imagine how shit life must be for people who have literally had their life put on hold for 12 months.

Enough is enough.

SpnBaby1967 · 04/03/2021 18:09

Honestly the idea that people are content to have the ability to visit their own families now be illegal is mind blowing to me.

I stuck to the rules for a few months, and then they just seemed absurd. I'm not going around merrily licking passers by or anything. But I see my best friend in her home or mine, my DH sees his best friend too (although he has significant mental health issues and has tried to commit suicide recently so we consider this vital to his survival even if it's just 4 hours on xbox with a pizza). My son just had his mate round the house to play nintendo, but again he just spent all day at school with him!

I wear masks, I socially distance with strangers, I sanitise and when unwell I have taken covid tests. But I wont refuse to see my family, that is bonkers!

Donotfeedthebears · 04/03/2021 18:22

It’s just a for a few weeks
It’s just a Covid passport to get into shops
It’s just another booster jab
It’s just an anal swab
It’s just double masking
It’s just for your safety
It’s just to protect others around you

MercyBooth · 04/03/2021 19:13

@Jellybaby4 Maybe its because more and more people are realising that whatever they do, whatever they sacrifice it will never be enough.
That instead of being thanked we will be blamed and scapegoated.

namechange63524 · 04/03/2021 19:52

I'm sick of this lockdown - it has been relentless. However, I DO think a little longer before all kids go back to school is sensible - and a rota system for a little while instead. I've stuck to the rules, but I'm going to see family in the garden this weekend - precisely because we have been able to stay home so are low risk. I know we will be able to do this in a couple of weeks, but numbers and risk will be higher then due to schools going back. I want to wait til vulnerable members have been vaccinated.

lljkk · 05/03/2021 14:06

oh ffs, MNers have been predicting widespread Lockdown resistance & defiance since April (?March) 2020. In meantime, a large majority of people actually conformed a large majority of the time. Support continues to be actively high for strong controls. It's not what I want, but I have no delusions -- this is what majority want.

Racoonworld · 05/03/2021 14:34

I don’t think it’s what most people want. Lots of people are breaking rules, they just aren’t vocal about it. Everyone I know now is seeing close family. It’s common knowledge amongst us but we aren’t shouting about it, just getting in with life quietly.
