Vaccine numbers and it feeling further and further away

I don't really want to berate what is clearly a massive job that has so far been amazingly well delivered, but I'm feeling a little despondent.

Numbers of jabs are not increasing and now they're on to second doses too, meaning the new doses are going to be less.

A month ago I was hearing almost daily of friends and family being called... now no one, just us waiting.

Any positive comments? I really want the numbers to continue, if not rise.

BTW I'm late 50s so maybe it just feels worse because it's near, but not near enough.

What do you mean "the numbers of jabs are not increasing"???

Are you somewhere other than UK?

Make sure you select the right region, England Scotland or Wales and also in the vaccination rate bit choose government plan. I think you will find it's very close for you.

The government briefed the press on this, there's currently a supply drop which is expected and temporary and has been factored into the final target date. They have also made sure second doses won't slow first doses down, they're being done at separate clinics / days and it has all been accounted for in the plan.

Dh is 59 and booked yesterday. Where in the country are you OP? You should be able to book online within the next week or two.

DareIask · 03/03/2021 13:44

I'm in the Midlands.

I'm sorry to whinge... it really is an amazing achievement so far. Just a bit of cabin fever today Smile

I am 58 and due at end of march according to calculator, dh is 59 getting his friday, Originally that was going to be September, then june , then april so really dont understand your thinking

MrsFrisbyMouse · 03/03/2021 13:51

There is a short (and planned for) drop this week in vaccine supply. But lots available for weeks after. So I would expect to see a huge push from next week.

CovidPostingName · 03/03/2021 13:53

Monday and Tuesday reported numbers are always lower ad they reflect the weekend. The drop in supply is temporary as has been pointed out. It's been a fantastic success, in England we have now vaccinated with at least a first dose nearly 38% (17.3m) of the eligible adult population (@46m) in effectively eight weeks since beginning of January! It's incredible! Over 50s will likely be able to book for larger hubs using the national website within 2-3 weeks. How on earth is that 'so far away'?

CuriousaboutSamphire · 03/03/2021 13:55

DH is 59, I'm 54. We both expect to get a call sometime this month. But we are aware that other areas have far fewer older, vulnerable residents. I can see the local surgery queue as I walk the dog. They are working really hard, we'll get there soon enough!

SleepingStandingUp · 03/03/2021 13:58

The number of jabs they can give each day is going to plateau at some point op. They can't give 1000 one day then 2000 then 3000 etc exponentially.

Focus on the daily increase in total vaccines given.

WombatChocolate · 03/03/2021 13:58

50s will be very soon and keen 40s who keep checking the national booking site and inputting their details are likely to be booked by the end of the month.

Honestly, if you are upper 50s, it really won’t be and cannot be long now.

If you’re prepared to travel to wherever the booking site first offers you, you could well be done next week.

DayBath · 03/03/2021 14:00

At a guess I just looked for you on the vaccine calculator for age 57 with no health conditions, and it says you should be called at the end of the month!

This is based on a ridiculously high uptake of 95% so it could be even sooner if people don't respond to invites or can't have it for health reasons.

DareIask · 03/03/2021 14:01

I think this is part of my problem today. No queues here anymore, whereas both local hubs used to be so busy

I do understand that supply needs to go where it's needed btw.. if an area needs more to catch up with their elderly then that's only right.

Like is said in my original post, it just feels like it's really slowed down atm and I'm having a bad day.

As long as it's going up, you're getting closer

Vaccine numbers and it feeling further and further away
BMW6 · 03/03/2021 14:04

So if I understand you correctly you think the number of jabs achieved each and every day should be more than was achieved the previous day?

If so that would be a completely unrealistic expectation - some vaccinators won't be available some days (sick, suspect covid, medical appointment etc), and the supplies of the vaccine itself can be variable for any number of perfectly valid reasons.

But every day the TOTAL of people inoculated is rising by at least 150,000, usually more like 400,000!!!

Come on OP, I have no doubt you'll get your first jab within the next month.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 03/03/2021 14:06

I feel your pain. I’m 57. My friend who is 62 got a letter yesterday and the fist appointment available was 18th March.

The closer it comes the harder it is. Next postcode to us are well into the 50’s, so it doesn’t even seem like a city thing. I would have thought x number of vaccines were allocated to a certain health authority. But 2 groups ahead on a road 5 minutes away but in different post code seems a bit random.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 03/03/2021 14:07

Local hubs tend to do the walking well, GP surgeries those with issues. Some, like ours, have been slower because of demographics and have fallen behind a little, so they are now being prioritised.

Don't let daily fluctuations get to you. As others have said, look at the weekly totals.

Remember initially we were projected to be done in Autumn!

DareIask · 03/03/2021 14:09

@BMW6 no of course not.
The previous 400k plus per day is down to about half that atm... as someone has said, supply is down.

My point was that now they are having to do second doses the numbers per day need to increase to maintain the firsts, but atm it's not.

Just posted on another thread - I'm in East Suffolk and all over 50s were contacted mid-Feb by text to book their jab. Had mine last week.

FourTeaFallOut · 03/03/2021 14:13

The rolling average is down a little this week and we have number weeks from mid- march. J&j has been submitted for approval. It's all going fine.

Still on the mid 60s around here

The data for 28 Feb & 1 March was around 200K but they refer to the weekend.

Which in itself is odd when in the past the weekends have been some of the better days.

I think you are catatsrophising when the rasons behind lumpy supply and quiet mass vacc centres is the same - gearing up for the 2nd jab over and above first ones.

Our local mass vacc cenre was very busy but has seemed very quiet recently. Turns out they have increased capacity ahead of the expected changes with 2nd jabs. So there are more people going through, but each 'station' is quieter!

A friend who has been there since it opened said it seemed like all the urgency had gone, then they had a meeting and realised just how big the changes in capacity had been! Another friend who works on a surgery just a few miles away said that they have cleared their over 60s and are working through 50+ quite quickly. But our surgery, our small town, isn't there yet!
