AstraZeneca vaccine

Kaylasmum49 · 01/03/2021 13:13

Hi, I have to make an appointment to get my vaccine, I'll be getting the AstraZeneca vaccine and I am worried about the side effects. From reading threads on here it seems that this one has the worst side effects. I have severe anxiety and my mind is going into overdrive, just wondering if I can hear some positive stories concerning this vaccine.

The worst I've heard is fluey for a couple of days. Most people have said they feel rough for 24 hours - tired and a bit headachy. You can cope with that!

Ifailed · 01/03/2021 13:16

OP, I've had it, and some side effects as have many other people I know.
First off, remind yourself that many people have no side effects. Even so, they are mild and short lived. A day or two with a cold & a sore arm, and then it's over.
On the plus side, the side effects for the second AZ jab are said to be much more milder, unlike the Pfizer where it's the other way round.

Andwereback · 01/03/2021 13:17

I had no side effects, arm was ever so slightly tender, but went after a day or two. Most people I know have had a sore arm, like with any jab, and that's been it. I know of a couple.who were fluey for a couple of days but that was the exception rather than the rule.

gollymissdolly · 01/03/2021 13:19

My DH had the Astra Zeneca last week.He developed a headache within a few hours which was relieved by taking paracetamol .

toomanypillows · 01/03/2021 13:20

I had none whatsoever and neither did my mum, if that helps. 😁

JaninaDuszejko · 01/03/2021 13:23

All the oldies in my family have had AZ with no side effects, I though Pfizer reported more side effects. Have you heard of the nocebo effect? If you expect side effects you are more likely to get them. Remember the facts, most people have no side effects. Seems to be less likely to get a sore arm than the flu vaccine so that's good.

notrub · 01/03/2021 13:24

The side-effects tend to show in people with the strongest immune systems - that's because it's your immune response that's causing them.

So if you do have some mild side effects take heart - it means you're immune system is very healthy!

FlyingBurrito · 01/03/2021 13:24

I don't get how hearing about how other people got on will help you. You know that your reaction has nothing to do with anyone else, right?

It is completely irrelevant whether anyone else had any side effects, what am I missing?

RuleWithAWoodenFoot · 01/03/2021 13:26

I can hear some positive stories concerning this vaccine.

It will significantly reduce your risk of being severely ill or dying if you were to contract covid, it will also protect the rest of your family and community. Billions of people around the world are not going to be as lucky as you are to be offered it.

That's pretty positive I'd say.

My and OH had ours yesterday. No side effects at all. Just very, very slight ache on the arm around the injection site. No headaches, no flu like symptoms, no abnormal tiredness etc.

The benefits far outweigh the low risk of pretty minor side effects.

Not only are we now on the road towards protection from Covid, we even got an "I've been vaccinated" sticker. What's not to like!

Fruitinator · 01/03/2021 13:46

Similar to PP who have had the AstraZeneca vaccine- absolutely no problem, so quick I hardly felt a thing. Bit of a headache and tired feeling, then a tender arm (only really noticeable when you think about it) Paracetamol took head ache away.

I know 4 others who have had the AZ vaccine - and they all report the same as me. MIL didn't have any symptoms at all.

Certainly no effects of any concern.

Kaylasmum49 · 01/03/2021 13:51

FlyingBurrito I was just hoping to put things in perspective!! Is that difficult to understand? Having health anxiety can really skew your rational thinking and for me looking at statistics really helps, so if I find out that 8 out of 10 people who had AstraZeneca only had mild symptoms then that eases my mind a little. And obviously I know that as an individual my side effects will be unknown until I've had the vaccine.

Actually yes, I do find that a little difficult to understand.

Not the concept of course but even if I knew the statistics it wouldn't make any difference to how worried or otherwise I was about having the jab as global population statistics are just that, they have no impact on my individual reaction.

We're all different though so no surprise that we have different outlooks, however if the factual statistics help you better to look them up than surely that take any notice of some randomers who happen to belong to this website and happen to see the thread and happen to decide to post.

Kaylasmum49 · 01/03/2021 14:34

FlyingBurrito why did you feel the need to respond to my post just to tell me that you don't understand it? I have seen other posts on here asking pretty much the same question. I assume you don't suffer from anxiety. My post was to hopefully give me an idea of who has had mild effects.

Anyway, you don't need to understand my post nor do you need to comment on it.

Thanks to everyone else for the input it does help to sort things out in my mind.

I had it.
I have a shit immune system. On immunosuppressants.
I felt rough the next day. Not take to your bed and medicate rough. Just lie on the sofa and chill out rough.
I’d rather have that than COVID!

TinyTear · 01/03/2021 14:54

had it thursday - sore arm, mild headache, shivery overnight for 2 nights - nothing paracetamol didn't help

partyatthepalace · 01/03/2021 14:57

I know a few who’ve had it - mixture of a headache for a few hours, or a flu-y feeling for a day or two and a sore arm. Nothing dire.

Cakeandslippers · 01/03/2021 14:58

Had it Sunday at 10.30am, felt a bit rough from about 6 30pm till about 10.30 next morning (headache, mildly achy body and but groggy) and then a milder headache and achy arm the following day. Totally fine now. Really wasn't that bad, paracetamol worked fine.

Neither of my parents had any side effects other than a couple of mildly aching joints

AcornsTrustee · 01/03/2021 15:01

Parents, both 65, had the Oxford Astra Zeneca vaccine last week.

DM felt extremely tired the next day, slight headache. DF nothing. Neither had a sore arm. Can’t wait to have mine now.

user1497207191 · 01/03/2021 15:03

My OH has impaired immunity due to being in the middle of chemotherapy. He was offered it a month go, but declined at that time as he'd just started Chemo and was already "spooked" with the carrier bag full of drugs he'd just started to take. We both had the jab yesterday and neither of us have had any real side effects.

KristaK · 01/03/2021 15:06

My dad had it - no side affects! :-)

EarlGreywithLemon · 01/03/2021 15:18

My in laws had it - no side effects at all. As did a friend’s very sick mother; likewise, nothing.

Tyzz · 01/03/2021 15:43

You can't predict your reaction to it. From my observation the older generation have fewer side effects and younger healthier people with stronger immune systems have more.

All the side effects are mild in the medical sense, ie not serious. That means that although you may feel unwell there is nothing actually wrong with you and you do not need to be concerned that there is anything sinister about the side effects.
For your anxiety think of it as though it's a pre-planned headache or period pain. You know what has caused it and you know it will go away, probably in about 12 hours.

DGRossetti · 01/03/2021 15:46

DW & I had it 10 days ago with no ill effects apart from a slightly sore arm - no more than you'd expect.

BIWI · 02/03/2021 16:13

I had it. Slightly sore arm, that was it.
