AstraZeneca vaccine

Hi, I have to make an appointment to get my vaccine, I'll be getting the AstraZeneca vaccine and I am worried about the side effects. From reading threads on here it seems that this one has the worst side effects. I have severe anxiety and my mind is going into overdrive, just wondering if I can hear some positive stories concerning this vaccine.

OP posts:
MonkeyPuddle · 02/03/2021 16:15

I had it a few days ago. Slightly sore arm like when I had my whooping cough immunisation.

LIZS · 02/03/2021 16:15

Dh had some aches and felt tired.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 02/03/2021 16:21

I had the AstraZeneca vaccine today, and apart from a slight headache, I have no side effects whatsoever, thus far.

I’d rather have nasty side effects than Covid, because even the worst side effects will be time-limited in most people who suffer them, but Covid can kill.

DeadButDelicious · 02/03/2021 16:23

I had it almost a week ago, other than a very slightly achey arm and I can't stress how very slight it was, I had no side effects at all. I was slightly tired I suppose but how much of that was vaccination and how much was toddler I couldn't tell you! Grin

My mum also had the AZ and had no side effects other than an achey arm, my dad had the Pfizer and had no side effects either other than an achey arm.

I did not get a sticker. I was kind of disappointed by that 😂.

BIWI · 02/03/2021 16:23

I got a sticker!

DGRossetti · 02/03/2021 16:24

Bit miffed we didn't get stickers now.

MaudesMum · 02/03/2021 16:25

I had mine yesterday morning. I feel a bit under the weather, as if I was about to get a cold or similar, but my arm isn't sore. I've popped a couple of paracetemol and just kept going.

MaudesMum · 02/03/2021 16:25

Also no sticker. Grr.

AwFeebs · 02/03/2021 16:27

I had it yesterday. Felt fine but woke in the night several times feeling hot but shivery.

General lethargy and headache today.

Just popped some cold and flu tablets which helped.

All in all very mild and no worse than a headcold.

DGRossetti · 02/03/2021 16:29

If I had known I wouldn't get a sticker even though I've had the jab, I might have refused on principle.

Maybe someone can post a picture so I can decide I didn't really want a sticker after all Grin

Womencanlift · 02/03/2021 16:30

I had AZ and had no side effects at all. In fact everyone I know that has had either vaccine has had no side effects with exception of a sore arm and even then people could still drive and do normal things

Didkdt · 02/03/2021 16:30

No sticker for me but all I had was a slightly sore arm and felt tired for 24 hours when I overdid it I felt a bit light headed.

Katyy · 02/03/2021 16:30

Which side effect worries you? I have emetophobia so the only thing I was worried about was being sick. I did feel sick because it brought on a migraine, so I too my anti sickness meds and fell asleep for four hours. After that I started to feel better.

GintyMcGinty · 02/03/2021 16:31

My mum just had a sore arm for a day or so.
My dad felt like he was coming down with a cold, that never came for a day or so.
I had mine this morning and nothing yet.

Oly4 · 02/03/2021 16:32

Think of the millions of people around the world with no access to vaccines. We are so incredibly luckily to have them OP. Come on, I’m sending you loads of good vibes, you can do this! A side effect for 24 hours or less - or not at all - is worth it!

WanderingMilly · 02/03/2021 16:33

I've just recently had the AstraZeneca vaccine, I was delighted because that's the one I would have chosen if I'd had the choice.

Yes, I had some side effects but from all my reading round the subject, the side effects are nothing to do with the vaccine type and rather whether you have had COVID before or not. If you've had COVID - which I did last year - your body may have a few antibodies already and therefore there's a bit of a reaction when you have the vaccination. This is also true of the second vaccination, most people have a bit more of a reaction because they've got some immunity from the first jab. It appears to hold true for AZ and Pfizer.

I was really worried about having side effects myself but it has been fine....I got achy about 12 hours after the jab and I did take paracetamol, it lasted for a day only. It felt like I was getting a cold, except I wasn't, and the arm which had the jab was sore. Then suddenly it went, and after a good night's sleep, I feel brilliant.

Honestly, I was worrying so much about the side effects but they are really OK, and I certainly shan't worry about the second dose when my time comes.

ifonly4 · 02/03/2021 16:34

Myself and DH both had AstraZeneca. I felt a bit sick in the afternoon (easily eat tea though) and felt a bit headachy for a week. DH didn't feel great the following day (flu like symptons) but he still managed to work 8.5 hours. His arm is still a bit red a week later.

Both of us will readily have our second vaccine - it's well worth the relief of knowing you've got some extra protection and hopefully in a few months I can relax a bit more and enjoy restrictions easing.

Friolero · 02/03/2021 16:36

I had no side effects other than a sore arm.

twirlbite · 02/03/2021 16:37

I had no side effects at all. My husband had mild flu- like symptoms for an afternoon and evening - felt completely ok the following day.
Good luck with your vaccination!

GeorgeandHarold66 · 02/03/2021 16:38

My arm was tender and swollen for 8 days afterwards, not sore enough to take painkillers though. No other side effects at all though, I felt fine.

SilverBirchWithout · 02/03/2021 16:39

Are there any specific side effects that are making you particularly anxious?

I had mine on Sunday and for about 24 hrs I’ve felt a bit fluey with chills, a mild fever, and a headache, enough not to go to work yesterday but not enough to stop me reading and browsing Mumnet, and already feeling well enough to do a bit of gardening. DH has just felt tired with a sore arm.

Can you focus on how much safer you will be, the mild side effects for a couple of days are such a small price to pay in order to reduce your risk of Covid by over 80%. I know logic doesn’t always help reduce anxiety but maybe focussing on the benefits to you personally could help. Facing your fear now for a couple of days, will help you from feeling fearful everyday about Covid.

Kollywobble · 02/03/2021 16:41

I had the AZ vaccine yesterday morning. I was fine all day but developed a headache overnight, which is still lingering a little bit. I felt a bit nauseous first thing this morning and have spent the day on the sofa with aching joints but it's manageable and I'd gladly take these mild symptoms every time if it meant eventually returning to some semblance of normality.

NewUserName3 · 02/03/2021 16:54

Good luck OP!

I have healthy anxiety too and although I’m scared of the vaccine I’m terrified of catching covid so will be having mine on Saturday.

I talked myself into a panic attack when I took penicillin for the first time and was convinced it had either given me a heart attack or I was in anaphylactic shock, so that was a bit of an embarrassing waste of A and E’s time so I’m hoping I can stay calm after the vaccine 😬

My mum and dad have had it. Dad didn’t have any side effects at all and mum had some redness around the injection site and a bit of a sore arm for a few days.

I’ve heard of far more people having no/very minor side effects than I have of people feeling really rough from it.

🤞🤞🤞🤞🤞🤞

YowMyHead · 02/03/2021 16:59

@Kaylasmum49: I had the AZ vaccine a few weeks ago, I'm 44 and otherwise v healthy, also pretty confident I have not had covid

  • it didn't hurt at all going in (couldn't feel it) - was relieved when had a slightly sore arm few hours later to know they hadn't missed
  • my jab was around 10.30 am. at 3pm that day I felt a bit drowsy so went down for a nap for a few hours, up for dinner, just felt tired.
  • went to bed for the night at around 10.30 pm, woke up at 2pm next day!! I felt a bit ill - some chills, some muscle soreness, quite a headache, but honestly no worse than a bad cold or flu that I've had before, and by 7pm that day I was right as rain

Relieved to have a reaction as shows immunity kicking in, and a couple of weeks out feeling rough for 1 day is neither here nor there - spending a day on sofa with mumsnet not so bad in grand scheme of things

I was a bit more tired than usual for a few days after, so maybe plan some early nights, stay hydrated, & have paracetemol on hand in case of headaches/muscle aches

We are SO lucky to be in UK and have chance of vaccine ahead of people in other countries (who frankly, are more at risk).
