Why do people still try to say that they don’t believe Covid exists?

Does anyone know people still spouting this nonsense?

Twitter full of it.

SonnetForSpring · 28/02/2021 22:01

It's an agenda of some sort to control people who don't want to believe in covid.

AfterSchoolWorry · 28/02/2021 22:02

Because they're stupid. That's the sad reality.

ParkheadParadise · 28/02/2021 22:02

I've several family members who believe covid doesn't exist and are refusing to have the vaccine.

Mischance · 28/02/2021 22:04

Because they are nuts.

SionnachGlic · 28/02/2021 22:06

I've never heard anyone say it but then again I don't know any conspiracy theorists, thankfully. I'm not sure how covid deniers (is that correct?) support their argument...is it all this 5G stuff...I should educate myself better so as I can understand...but when it sounds a bit crackers, I tend to switch off. But with all the deaths...who could think it is not real?

peak2021 · 28/02/2021 22:08

Thankfully I don't.

The sad thing is the consequence of this and the expenditure that has to be spent to counteract it.

CrunchyCarrot · 28/02/2021 22:16

Yep, it's still going on. I heard a priceless conspiracy theory today, I nearly died laughing. It's (predictably) about Bill Gates. Don't be eating or drinking whilst reading this! Grin

I’ve watched a video of his foundation this sounds mad but apparently Bill gates is Melinda gates and Melinda is Bill they use sex change stuff in there lab and looking at bill gates from years ago to now there is a difference, he sounds like Kermit the frog, and even Elton musk don’t trust him.

There's always a crowd of people who WANT to believe something non-mainstream, no matter how ridiculous. e.g. Q Anon. It's normally intellectually limited folk who have never come to terms with their status - can't accept that they're of low intelligence etc. Having these weird beliefs gives them a sense of superiority - that they're "not sheep".
It's for this reason that public health matters should NOT be a matter of individual choice. If you do ANYTHING or DON'T do something that risks other people's lives, then you should be dealt with. In my view anti-vaxxers are morally worse than terrorists and as far as covid goes, likely to cause more harm than the IRA ever did.

BonnieDundee · 01/03/2021 00:25

I dont know anyone who doesn't believe it exists but I know people who think it has been exaggerated or dont believe that flu has completely disappeared this year

On a local Facebook group, some dimwit told me to ‘phone up the Freedom of Information Act’ to find out if Covid exists 🤔🤣

Because they’re utterly terrified by the randomness of the world and it gives them comfort to think that (a) it’s not really happening and (b) someone, somewhere, is actually in control of it all.

KatherineJaneway · 01/03/2021 07:53

Because they think they know something most others don't. Makes them feel superior and special.

WitchesBritchesPumpkinPants · 01/03/2021 07:55

I suppose it's optional to use the brain you're born with. I wonder if they recycle the completely unused ones?

MissyB1 · 01/03/2021 07:59

Some because they are genuinely of low intelligence and unable to understand the most basic science.
Some because they have an ulterior motive and want to spread misinformation. It’s those people that are particularly dangerous and that believe they need dealing with severely.

itsgettingwierd · 01/03/2021 08:03

I don't know any deniers of covid as an illness.

I know a few who won't be convinced it's anything more than a mild flu. Or recognise it's not even a flu 🤦🏼‍♀️

Unfortunately one of those had it and had it mildly which in her mind just proves her right.

She gets arsey when you ask why 120k have died and thousands have been in ICU/HDU or admitted for O2.

gettingfedupagain · 01/03/2021 08:28

It's a fear reaction, combined with a sense of non compliance and a feeling of superiority. They can't accept how bad it is. The covid deniers I know were very early adopters of shielding, signs on the door for deliveries, washing deliveries etc then I think it all got too much and now they are vaccine refusing and all "it's my right" etc

Yes, my ex was the same. He was afraid to move his bin back hours after the bin men came. He was constantly putting gel on his hands inside his own house. Now, he’s going around antagonising people with his anti-mask attitude, has practically bullied his adult son (who has asthma) not to get vaccinated. Also, it’s all he talks about.

Also on the point of anti-vaxxers. My ex thinks Covid doesn’t exist but he was afraid to get near me when he came to see dd in case I was ‘shedding’ anything. Work that one out if you can 🤔

I know two (online). One thinks it's all part of the Apocalypse and is convinced this is the beginning of the end in religious terms. He does not believe in Covid or actually, in viruses at all! I guess there's no changing someone's mind in that case. The other, I think it's a superiority thing, they know what's 'really' going on compared to the rest of us sheeple.

Vellum is capable of answering phones?

I can't actually say that anyone I know IRL is a denier. According to the ONS, 94% want the vaccine, yet social media is full of nutters.

You’ve met my ex, then?! He was full of ‘not putting that shit in my arm’ and ‘it’s just flu’ but obediently went and got his vaccine when offered (worrying in itself, as it would seem to indicate he is Group 6). Our kids thought it was hislarious,

Cowmilk · 01/03/2021 09:27

I know people who say, our reaction to covid is more deadlier than actual covid. One person who says it is a bad version of flu (his father died of flu so he compares it to that).

NewLevelsOfTiredness · 01/03/2021 09:40

I also think there's a certain level of selfish individual who thinks in these kind of patterns:

  • This is massively inconveniencing my life.
  • I need to believe the inconvenience is unjust and unfair.
  • I will look for articles and posts that justify my need to prove it unfair.

These are often the same people who ONLY read the stuff that pulls them down the rabbit hole and then flail out at others for 'not doing their own research.'

HeadSpin5 · 01/03/2021 09:42

Agree with PPs that whilst I don’t see many that deny Covid exists completely, many do think our reaction to it has been OTT.
