When would you say a lockdown is over?

The Mail (sorry!) have had the same lockdown ticker going for about a year now. But I would argue we were not in lockdown for some of that time. Also there has been 3 distinct lockdowns though I know some people have been under quite a lot of restrictions the whole time.
DH has a lockdown beard which he says he will only shave when lockdown is over. I tentatively suggested 8th as the schools go back but he said 21st June Shock

Def wouldn't say 8th March, that's just the very beginning

ChameleonClara · 28/02/2021 16:59

Lockdown is over once you can go to all indoor venues, even if only in small groups.

So currently we are still in lockdown, then later we will be out of lockdown with social distancing/other rules in place, then at some point (too early I expect knowing our PM) they will get rid of all the rules.

hennybeans · 28/02/2021 17:00

The "stay at home" order comes to an end in England on 29 March. That's when lockdown ends in my opinion because we are free to go anywhere, although still have to follow rules regarding seeing others.

This is an interesting definition because it would mean we had 'never locked down again' even if all indoor venues bar essential retail were shut again later in the year.

The government haven't defined 'lockdown' but have said they hope not to 'lockdown' again but going by the variety of views, life could be really quite grim and still they could say we hadn't locked down.

icantthinkofanamehelp · 28/02/2021 17:06

Lockdown is definitely not over on 8 march.

Lockdown to me being over will be when all restrictions are lifted

tonystarksrighthand · 28/02/2021 17:06

21 June

No masks or SD

HALE FUCKING ULA

Whatever9999 · 28/02/2021 17:08

Personally I would say we've been in some form of lockdown for almost a year now. Yes restrictions have been eased at times, but there have still been restrictions.
As far as I'm concerned lockdown won't be over until I can do what I want without worrying its against the rules or if I have to book to get in

AnneElliott · 28/02/2021 17:09

I'd say 29th March when the stay at home guidance is lifted. That way I can go anywhere that's open and available.

DrunkenKoala · 28/02/2021 17:10

When all restrictions are lifted.
Easing starts on 8March but definitely not over.

That is the earliest that it can happen. It could be later.

PPNC · 28/02/2021 17:15

@tonystarksrighthand is that really when we dump masks and social distancing?? Like normal normal??

Hallelujah!

UmteenthUser · 28/02/2021 17:17

When the fat lady sings

LolaNova · 28/02/2021 17:21

Based on the number of large groups o saw today on my run... it’s either already ended or is going to go on forever 😭😭😭

Pimlicojo · 28/02/2021 17:24

I wouldn't say we've been in lockdown for nearly a year. In London, I appreciate there have been differences across the UK. In the summer pubs, restaurants, shops and museums were open. Not everything open, and not in a normal way.

Return to normality will take time, but I would say lockdown being over is when the 'stay at home' order is lifted. Even if there's nowhere to go....

UserAgain · 28/02/2021 17:25

End of lockdown is when the "stay at home" restriction is lifted. Which will be on or after the 29th March.

From a personal point of view it will be when I'm allowed to go back to my workplace as wfh means I'm obliged to spend most of my time at home anyway. No date on that yet.

"End of restrictions" will be when I'm able to travel everywhere freely (or at least as freely as I could 18 months ago).

Yes according to the road map BUT .... you know. Till the fat lady sings

Itsamess8456 · 28/02/2021 17:48

For me, the respite will be when the children are back In school, and non essential shops/restaurants are open so I can buy new knickers and bras and enjoy an evening out.

Itll take longer but I cannot wait for when we can hug people again and not wear a mask. I wear mask all day every day in work (NHS) and I hate it. It's hard to visually communicate when half your face is covered.

Judging from the actions of people living around here, several days ago!

Claire926 · 28/02/2021 18:00

When they start to ease these lockdowns in adherence with guidelines I will meet up with friends and go to places as much as I can because I don't trust the government and they can take away our freedom anytime. Chris Whitty said we need winter lockdowns, life cannot go on like that. The vaccines should help as that's what they have been telling us.

Yes, same here. Noticed some kind of family gathering going today in a neighbours' garden. Cases in my area are still above national average. Sad
yeOldeTrout · 28/02/2021 18:33

When Glastonbury can run with usual attendance numbers.

PuzzledObserver · 28/02/2021 18:39

To me, lockdown means instructions to stay at home and a travel ban within the UK. Once I can get in my car and go wherever I want without having one of a limited range of reasons, lockdown will be over. It just won’t be a whole lot of fun until I can meet people indoors and there are shops, concerts and cafes to go to.

Dugee · 28/02/2021 18:42

@yeOldeTrout

Yep, as soon as we can have mass gatherings without social distancing and masks. Back to normal, how we were pre March 2020.

However I think we'll be in a lockdown lite from when the stay at home order ends which is the end of March. As in we can meet friends outside for a picnic / beer garden from that point, with further removals on restrictions as we head into summer.

Voice of doom here predicts some mutant strain, probably from a country that hasn't had a mass vaccination programme, arriving here in autumn though and then its round 4 of lockdown. I hope I am wrong.

UmteenthUser · 28/02/2021 18:50

We are supposed to be going to see Diana Ross on 24th June, if that happens, I will know that lockdown is truly over, I suspect it won't

OliviaBensonsEyebrow · 28/02/2021 19:07

Given how hard I've found this last lockdown, I'll be happy with lockdown lite from the end of March.

I agree though, once crowds can gather, whether that's in a nightclub, concert or footie game, is when I will feel it's over. However I don't know when I will lose the doubt that it's only over for the short term and another outbreak from a vaccine resistant strain is round the corner.
