Vaccine when turning 18 this year

AmyFl · 26/02/2021 22:41

Does anyone know whether those who turn 18 towards the end of this year will still be offered the vaccine? Or once the 18 - 29 year group is vaccinated, have the current 17-year-olds missed out?

No one will miss out. Children will get the vaccine - they are already running trials.

pjani · 26/02/2021 23:06

They want to vaccinate as much of the population as possible so I’m confident it will be available to them.

In addition I thought Pfizer was ok for 16 and 17 year olds? Maybe I have that wrong. But they are trialling the vaccines on younger cohorts so over time I think they will be available to under 18s as well.

MrsJohnLuther · 26/02/2021 23:23

My 17 year old had Pfizer in jan - she works part time in a nursing home so It must be licensed for that age.

AmyFl · 27/02/2021 00:07

Thank you all

@MrsJohnLuther None of the currently available covid-19 vaccines are licensed, for any age group. They were granted emergency authorisation. Apparently it is expected that they will be licensed in late 2022/early 2023.

AstraZeneca are already testing in the younger age groups. I read that Scientists think we really need to get the younger age groups done.

Also, it sounds like we might need a third vaccine due to variants which I think will be ready. By the time we've gone around again 17 years will be the right age.

Rillington · 27/02/2021 08:05

Please could anyone with a 17 year old try to book on the online booking system and see what message you get. I think my DD may be in Group 6 but can't get through to the GP.

Thank you

Pfizer is for 16+ only. Oxford is for 18+ only.

Tomnooktoldmeto · 27/02/2021 09:52

DS is 17 and we’re waiting to hear when he will be vaccinated, he and DD18 are both in group 6

I know he can only have the phizer vaccine due to age but am a little concerned as he has a severe shell fish allergy

When I was vaccinated they would only give me the Astra Zeneca one due to previous anaphylaxis but obviously ds can’t have this

ArosAdraDrosDolig · 27/02/2021 10:23

A 16 year old relative was called this week and vaccinated. I understood that 16+ are being vaccinated?

kimlo · 27/02/2021 10:29

16 year olds are only being vaccinated in the top priority groups.

When phase 2 was announced yesterday the group was 18-29.

That means my asthmatic 17 year old wont recieve one because she isn't group 6.

bigginswitch · 27/02/2021 12:58

@Rillington
That message seems to mean the patient is eligible on the national booking system but due to age has to be vaccinated by a GP hub to ensure that Pfizer is available on the day.

Abraxan · 27/02/2021 13:01

Rillington- group 6 can't use the national site, group 6 are being called via their GPs

Rillington · 27/02/2021 13:13

Thank you @bigginswitch and @Abraxan

bigginswitch · 27/02/2021 13:15

@Rillington - did your child get a shielding letter?

bigginswitch · 27/02/2021 13:16

They may be group 4 not group 6. Group 4 do go through national booking site, but can't if they are under 18, hence having to arrange via GP.

Rillington · 27/02/2021 13:20

No, no shielding letter. She has a heart condition.

Walk20 · 27/02/2021 19:57

@Rillington

Thank you

I'm in the same position as you Rillington and got the same message.

It would be really useful if someone with a 17 year old who is definitely not CEV or CV could put their hospital number and DOB into the online booking system to see what message you get. Then I would know if my 17 year old is eligible now or whether the message you received above is standard for all 16/17 year olds. Thanks

Rillington · 27/02/2021 20:02

@Walk20 I have a 16 year old as well as a 17 year old I tried her details. It just comes up as she cannot be found on the system. I wish they would make it easier to find out.

sashagabadon · 27/02/2021 20:04

Hi, just tried to book for my non Cev or cv 17 year old to see what message I would get. She is definitely not entitled to a vaccine right now.
This is the message:-

You are not eligible to book through this service

According to your vaccination records, you have been allocated a coronavirus vaccine not currently available through this booking service.

Contact your GP surgery for advice on how to book your vaccination appointment.

Rillington · 27/02/2021 20:07

Thank you @sashagabadon.

sashagabadon · 27/02/2021 20:16

No problem, hope your daughter gets her vaccine soon Smile

UnmentionedElephantDildo · 27/02/2021 20:26

The only 16+ groups are the CEV (priority 4) and CV (priority 6)

As the vaccine will continue to be available after initial roll out, I expect DC will be able to have itnonce they turn 18. Or perhaps they'll reduce it to 16+ generally, once all over 18s have ben offered, as that would make sixth forms considerably safer

Rillington · 27/02/2021 20:29

@UnmentionedElephantDildo it's the mixed communication. Dr Hilary Jones on GMB the other day said the vaccine would be available to everyone over 16. Hopefully they will get it soon.

Merinocool · 27/02/2021 20:41

My 16 year old had the Pfizer vaccine in January, he’s in priority group 4. Hopefully everyone over 16 will be offered it at some point 🤞 I certainly feel better about mine going back to college knowing he’s vaccinated.
