Has the lockdown ended?

Has the lockdown ended without me realising? Went for my daily walk today and many groups of up to 10 people having picnics and drinking on the green, must have been 200 people in total. Every bench was in use. Must be the nice weather!

Ooh, who else is playing bingo? We've had 'is lockdown over?' 'I was out for a legitimate reason but everyone else was a flouter' and now 'not a proper lockdown', so I'm hopeful of getting full house.

We've also heard of places being 'rammed' (by someone who was contributing to the 'ramming'). And 'the longer idiots do this the longer it goes on'.

Not sure we've had 'gangs of teens' or references to people 'flocking' to places yet. But the night is young!

I cycled to Boscastle today, there was a dog walker an elderly couple about, i really did expect a lot of people out and about but there wasn't.

Cornwalls rate 33 in 100,000 yesterday.

@ginsparkles

I didn't think that he said specified indoor or outdoor, just that he was concerned people thought it was over and people were taking their foot of the brake at exactly the wrong time. He did mention thinking one home visit was ok, but he's point seemed more general people need to stick to the rules, to me.
Problem is breaking the rules becomes a mindset. Bending the odd rule a little bit is one thing, but people meeting in groups in a park will soon become indoor mixing in houses.

@Hardbackwriter you've at least got a line 😂

Yep lockdown is over, let's all go to the pub.

saraclara · 26/02/2021 19:44

It warmed my heart to see people out enjoying the sunshine today. I didn't see anything that I thought risked spreading the virus. People were hardly on top of each other (I don't believe there's a single park in the country that was "rammed") so as long as households kept to themselves at least 2m away from others, I don't see a problem.

Can't say I've seen many people having picnics but I sat on a bench with my friend today and had a snack, not sure if that's classed as a picnic. I also drove 12 miles to get there because I needed to visit a shop that is very close to my friends house.

Too cold for me to be sitting for any length of time but I can't blame people for wanting to catch up with their friends and enjoy the sunshine too.

Interesting listen to today’s update on bbc and JVT saying you need to follow the rules, it’s not over and in fact cases are rising again in places

But hey, Mnetters know best!!

islockdownoveryet · 26/02/2021 20:14

@madroid

Yep - we will all stay in fecking lockdown forever at this rate.

Just stay in people until you are told you can go out. Otherwise this will never end.

Van Tam is on the TV tonight saying how the decrease in cases has slowed down big time this week.

Why are the British so fecking thick? It's only been a year - obviously not long enough for some idiots to learn.

But it’s a global pandemic not just England. Also people are very judgmental of the rules A good friend of mine wfh since March very vocal on social media of people not following the rules . You know the usual all these people can’t be going out for essentials etc . Also critical when we went into lockdown after Christmas blaming people for you know it not following the rules . Anyway just before Christmas went abroad with 3 other households not illegal as in tier 3 but I judge someone more for flying abroad with 3 households on a plane with over 100 people and back rather than a some people having a picnic in the local park . One was allowed one wasn’t who fault is that oh the thick British no our crap government that’s who .

Good. People enjoying the sunshine is great for mental health after this year. Lovely to hear

This.

I haven't been out today but I ate my lunch in the garden (I was wearing a coat but still) and it was amazing.

I k ow it's against the rules but I don't think it's a risk with people outdoors. Indoors would us much more risky.

saraclara · 26/02/2021 21:13

If we can have a good spring again so that people can be out, it's much less likely that they'll meet indoors. So that's good surely?

Some people have been breaking the rules and meeting indoors for some time. If they start meeting outdoors instead, that's less risk for us all.

Maybe MNers have also read the evidence that transmission is very low outdoors, including when people were 'flocking to beaches' last year, much to the disgust of some on here?

What do you mean? It’s not against the rules to go outside!

DenisetheMenace · 26/02/2021 21:19

This was always going to happen to an extent when school return was announced.

Hopefully, most people will remain cautious until the majority of the population is vaccinated because it could still very easily tip the wrong way again.

HexWitch · 26/02/2021 21:24

It's been lovely seeing children out playing in the playground again in the sunshine after a brutal autumn/winter up north with very little chance to go for these fabled 'walks' without needing fifteen layers of clothes and a kagool. Damn right I'm glad to see people out and scout again.

ICUNurse · 26/02/2021 21:32

I’m not sure how I feel about this, my unit is still running at double its usual capacity. Most of our redeployed staff are going back to their usual jobs next week. Absolutely could not handle another wave, even a small one. We have come so far and I wish people could just stick to the guidance for a little bit longer.

User133847 · 26/02/2021 21:42

@islockdownoveryet

Yeah, that's a good point. To put it another way, people not following the rules now is less of a problem than in December when people were following rules because the rules were a lot more lax and the schools, shops, pubs and restaurants etc were open (at least in tier 3).

Hence why cases went sky high over Christmas and January as a result.

If cases fly up it'll be due to schools opening up in a week or so and shops and hospitality beyond that. The issue is cases not dropping off enough to get community transmission very low before the schools back open, but it's dropped off from over 60,000 a day at the start of Jan to less than 10,000 by the end of Feb because things have been shut.

User133847 · 26/02/2021 21:46

Not sure if that correlates though. People may just as soon stay at home when the weather is bad.

When the weather is nice people are just mixing more generally. If not on a park or a beach then in gardens and barbecues. Once they're in gardens and the alcohol is flowing then social distancing/staying outside falls by the wayside.

Downriver · 26/02/2021 22:39

Yes, I was participating in the ramming. I was on a bus coming home from work and it was traffic jams all the way to Leytonstone. Your point?
