So much for ‘protect the NHS’

This is a ranty post & I apologise.

I’m really starting to get pissed off with the vaccine situation.

My area are now onto vaccinating the over 40’s!!!

I’ve got family & friends that have been called for theirs... fit, healthy, no underlying health conditions.

I’m early 30’s two health conditions and I’m in group 6 for the vaccine.

I can’t book online and when I’ve spoken to my GP (today) they’ve just said I will have to wait for them to contact me.

My sister in law has been given hers on the basis that she’s a carer.
She “cares” for her husband who has a bad back.
A back so bad that over the summer he’s completely transformed his back garden, alone!

It just really doesn’t seem fair at all.

I have a small child and I’m a single parent, surely I should be vaccinated as a carer?!

I know we are all entitled to the vaccine, but hasn’t the point all along beeb to protect the NHS?!

How are we protecting them by jumping ahead to the fit and healthy and leaving the vulnerable ones behind?!

In my experience, the GP booking etc went very fast once they knew when they were getting the jabs - they didn't know for sure to start with so couldn't give a timescale, and so we just had to wait. But then once they knew, the dates were available to book very soon. So just because they don't know now, it doesn't necessarily mean that you will have to wait ages. Hope you get info soon.

stopringingme · 26/02/2021 15:12

I got my letter today - Group 6 and I have booked my appointment online

Boulshired · 26/02/2021 15:14

The GPs have been so overwhelmed that the trust here has opened up the hubs for walk ins for those eligible for their vaccine so groups 5&6 as well as those booking in group 7 and carers. DP falls into group 6&7 and got booked in with group 7 for ease. The GP run site are booked up until the 8th March.

LegoPirateMonkey · 26/02/2021 15:14

It’s not a perfect system and the focus is on speed and mass coverage so some anomalies are inevitable. But it is rolling out ahead of schedule which is brilliant for us all. The more people vaccinated, the less chance there is of you being exposed to the virus anyway as the vaccines have been shown to reduce transmission. It might be a slightly haphazard and uneven process but the vaccine program has been pretty amazing and every jab helps us all.

Loopyloututu2 · 26/02/2021 15:16

I find this “jab envy” astounding. I can understand you want the jab ASAP but honestly, getting mad at your older relatives for being offered it before you is just silly.

What are they supposed to do - turn it down as a matter of principle because you haven’t had yours? They are getting through people fast, and you have to wait your turn - there will probably be people who think they should get it before you who’ll have to wait even longer down to postcodes/only having one medical condition etc.
Your anger is misplaced.

MissyB1 · 26/02/2021 15:18

@TheyIsMyFamily same here 😕 I’m 52 previous history of cancer, working in a school nursery with toddlers who regularly cough in my face. No sniff of a vaccine yet.

And on fb lots of healthy young adults boasting about getting their vaccine. Sigh....

Lemons1571 · 26/02/2021 15:18

I agree with you. I’m group 6. I fully expect all age groups to be done before I even get a sniff out of my gp as they are completely overwhelmed.

What happens if all age groups are indeed vaxxed and group 6 are still nowhere near finished. Doesn’t look good does it.

Viviennemary · 26/02/2021 15:21

Fairness doesn't come into the NHS. Nor does common sense. I would rather it was privatised.

NoWayHosier · 26/02/2021 15:21

Why can't ambulant Group 6 people book a slot in a hub? Seems daft they are all having to be vaccinated by GPs when some may be able to book online and attend a hub.

time4anothername · 26/02/2021 15:21

I don't blame you for the rant. I am finding it incredibly cruel that people with health conditions that have had to live with an extra layer of worry and pressure this year for fear that they may have Covid worse than average are having to wait and watch while those less at risk get the vaccine.

NoWayHosier · 26/02/2021 15:22

Well presumably if it pans out in the way you describe the risk to the remaining group 6 people will be greatly reduced as everyone around them will be vaccinated.
time4anothername · 26/02/2021 15:23

@imlateagain

I'm in group 6 and have just booked online as my GP has no idea when they'll get to me. Maybe it depends on how busy your local vaccination centre is?
how were you able to do that? Unless you are in group 6 because you are a carer or you are over 64 (or possibly 60 as the rumour is the system lets you book), the system does not let you through?
Krazynights34 · 26/02/2021 15:27

I’ve also received a letter today. I’m group 6 (a cater for my DD).
I’ve just booked online

Krazynights34 · 26/02/2021 15:27

Carer not cater

Cocomarine · 26/02/2021 15:34

@Lemons1571 well what happens is that Group 6 are at less risk anyway, because of the other vaccinations 🤷🏻‍♀️

It’s not perfect, but the vaccinations are progressing fast. Yes some lower risk people will be done before higher risk - but that (a) means less risk for all and (b) means the CV Group 6 will have a faster chance of being picked up by age instead

Beyondfedupnow · 26/02/2021 15:34

I am a CARER parent, ie I look after and see to every need of a CEV shielding Down Syndrome child who also has chronic asthma. Your entitlement is beyond belief.
Wait your turn like everybody else.
My poor son can’t have any sort of normal
life until he turns 16 next year and can have the vaccine.

Completely agree with this.
BertiesShoes · 26/02/2021 15:39

I am definitely group 6 (stroke) confirmed by GP this week and the online system will most definitely not let me book - I tried earlier. I am late 50s so group 8 for age.

I suspect I will be done on age before vulnerability - many on local FB saying they are Group 7, had a letter and had vaccine, so Gp8 won’t be far behind.

Group 6 are current being processed by GP (my kids both had it today) and lots on FB saying they had it, but I am just being told, like the Op, to wait my turn.

I do believe that the hubs should not be doing 40 year olds anywhere, when there are vulnerable people still waiting.

Our area is saying there is a lack of vaccines, so why aren’t the areas who are way ahead in age groups being told to ‘pause’ to let other areas have vaccines for vulnerable people.

The system is doing wonders overall but there shouldn’t be instances where vulnerable people was and healthy 40yo are vaccinated.

Bilgepumper · 26/02/2021 15:42

I understand your frustration. My brother has severe asthma and fits the criteria for group 6 but can't get a vaccine.

However, every single person who is vaccinated is protecting us all. That's the way vaccination works.

My brother has been told by Asthma Uk, to wait two weeks and if he's not heard anything, then to contact his GP.

Mulhollandmagoo · 26/02/2021 15:42

If you're eligible, contact your GP, that's what a couple of people I know have done and they have been given an appointment. Call them back and ask to speak with the practice manager?

@Mulhollandmagoo

I called today and spoke to a GP.
I had an appointment (over the the telephone) and mentioned my vaccine at the end.

I wasn’t offered an appointment. Just told that they can’t give me a timescale and I’ll be called when they get round to me...

PanamaPattie · 26/02/2021 15:45

Just wait until it is your turn. It won't be months - it will be weeks.

Covidcorvid · 26/02/2021 15:45

Dd is group 6 and I’m worried she’s been forgotten/missed off the list. Lots of other group 6 people locally have had it. She’s 19 so if she has to wait her turn on age it’ll be ages. She’s meant to be shielding now due to her condition and being clinically vulnerable but not extremely vulnerable.

Naturally privatisation whereby the one at the front will be the ones with the most money will make it extremely fair Hmm have a think on that one!
