Astrazeneca covid vaccination side effects.

Had my first astrazeneca jab this morning at 11am, everything was great. In and out of the surgery in under ten minutes. Went straight out for a long walk in the glorious sunshine, arrived home around forty minutes later feeling fabulous. However as the day has progressed my arm is really, really sore which I expected, can't raise it at all, too much discomfort. Since around 7 pm I've been feeling shivery and shaky.........similar to flu symptoms I guess. I've been online and these are recognised side effects.

Should I take a couple of paracetamol to shake it off, or just wait for it to pass on in the next day or two?

Sounds very common with covid vaccines, AZ/Oxford in particular. Yes, you are completely fine to take paracetamol. Paracetamol is good at bringing down temperatures of you're getting a bit of a fever.

Chewbecca · 25/02/2021 20:57

Both!

Take the paracetamol and wait, it will take up to 72 hours to pass.

CaptainCarp · 25/02/2021 20:57

A couple of my friends have had the Oxford vaccine. They said paracetamol & expect to feel "rough" for 24-48hrs.

One compared it to a hangover m.

Know two people who have had the AZ jab and been poorly. One for 24 hours the other for 72.

At least you know it’s doing its job.

RedcurrantPuff · 25/02/2021 20:59

I’ve had it today and besides my arm feeling a bit leaden am OK so far. Didn’t get it til 3.30 though so I’m a few hours behind you.

Tolkienista · 25/02/2021 21:03

Thanks for all your comments so so helpful. It came on in the evening out of the blue. If I was due into work in the next few hours I'd be phoning in sick, thankfully I'm not working at the moment, so I've got time to feel better tomorrow onwards hopefully!

My friend was really unwell after the AZ vaccine. She had to have a drip and all sorts. Her GP had recommended that she not have the Pfizer due to various heath issues and allergies. She was off her feet for a week but said she'd still have it knowing what she knows now.

Conversely, my elderly father had no issues whatsoever.

ScarletORyan · 25/02/2021 21:08

My DD (19) has severe learning disabilities and had AZ jab this morning. Since late afternoon obviously feeling v unwell, has temp of 38.4 which didn't reduce with paracetamol, crying and snotty. Poor DD, feel bad for inflicting this on her. A bad night ahead for us both! 🙁

Workinghardeveryday · 25/02/2021 21:08

Had mine nearly 3 weeks ago. Sunday at 2pm, fine. Tired Sunday night but fine. Monday felt very tired but fine. Tuesday... very poorly!!! Temperature, chills, shaking, headache, generally exhausted and felt shocking. Lasted until Friday night really xx

Tolkienista · 25/02/2021 21:17

So glad I created this post........ nothing worse than feeling like you're on your own. As I said, it's taken a good 8 hours to feel this way, but boy has it hit me for six. I really thought it was just going to be a sore arm, but if you think of what's been injected it kind of adds up that you may feel some of the symptoms outlined by those who've felt unwell.

It's doing it's job! Take some paracetamol and relax. My dad felt rough for 24 hours. Then he was back to normal apart from an aching arm.

RedcurrantPuff · 25/02/2021 21:20

I think I might get in an early night and take a couple of paracetamol before bed

queenjaneappro · 25/02/2021 21:34

I had it today at 11:30. Feel ok now just very tired and minor aches. Like a PP I'm taking some paracetamol and getting an early night.

JayAlfredPrufrock · 25/02/2021 21:36

I was told that with the Pfizer jab it would be the second dose that is more likely to cause a reaction.

HappyFourTeeth · 25/02/2021 21:39

I had the AZ jab on Monday.

Felt fine until lunchtime Tuesday, when the sore arm kicked in and then a headache and complete exhaustion. Felt like I had flu on Weds and today, although slightly better this evening and the pain in my arm is easing.

Satsunday · 25/02/2021 21:39

I felt nothing until about 10 hours after mine. My skin hurt like mild sunburn and I got chills and a temp. It went after 24 hours. Whilst it wasn't fun it was perfectly manageable and definitely wouldn't put me off having it again.

Lockupyourbiscuits · 25/02/2021 21:41

I had chills 7 hours post vaccine - took a couple of paracetamol doses and felt fine by the next day !

DinosaurDiana · 25/02/2021 21:42

Take painkillers, drink more water and move your arm.

amicissimma · 25/02/2021 21:45

Take socks to bed!

I know a couple of people who had a raised temperature and felt hot but had painfully freezing hands and feet.

All the people I know who've had these effects are women, the men who've had AZ have been fine. Are women's immune systems more energetic? It can't be psychological - surely we can't think ourselves into fever?

Florelei · 25/02/2021 21:47

I had mine yesterday. I felt fine (ish) until 5.30 this morning when I felt like I’d been hit by a train for a few hours. I was dizzy, cold, shivery and sick. I’ve spent most of the day in and out of bed and now feel much better.

Hopefully that’s it.

fish231 · 25/02/2021 21:48

I had mine on Saturday, felt great till I woke up at midnight shivering and really rough. It's Thursday now and my temperature is just back under control!
Lots of rest and fluids and paracetamol and you'll feel normal again soon!

goldpendant · 25/02/2021 21:50

Day 3, finally feel just about back to normal.

Like you described- shivery, achey, a bit lethargic etc etc.

It means it's working!

occa · 25/02/2021 21:51

I had my AZ on Tuesday. No side effects at all so far. My arm is only sore if I bash into something.

Maybe it didn't 'take' Shock

nbee84 · 25/02/2021 21:52

I had mine at 12 o'clock lunchtime, went to bed at 10.30 feeling 'heavy' and tired. Slept soundly til midnight then woke up cold and physically shivering - was awake and felt rough until 6am, then slept on and off through the day. By 7pm felt much better and was back at work the next day feeling totally fine. Friend had it at the same time as me and just felt a bit tired. Hopefully your side effects will wear off quickly.

EnoughnowIthink · 25/02/2021 21:53

Had it last week. I was fine by the 48 hour mark. Worst was 24 - 36 hours with a fever. Rest of the time was like a medium hangover. Take paracetamol as it helped.
