To wonder why covid cases are still so high?

I didn’t really know where else to post this but it’s really just a nosey post! If you’ve had covid in 2021 I’m wondering where did you get it from? Supermarket? Hospital? Or another place of work? This post really isn’t meant to be judgemental I’m just wondering! I’m a secondary school teacher and hoping beyond hope that cases take a dramatic plummet between now and the 8th of March as I was disappointed the cases were still at 10,000 today!

Nobody knows where they got it from. Also cases are falling fast (at least in Wales where I am - I assumed in England too).

MrBullinaChinaShop · 25/02/2021 19:30

Everyone I know who has been admitted to hospital recently for any reason has tested negative on arrival then positive a while later. My cousin contracted it in hospital while having an operation on his leg and died.
Also millions of people are still having to go out to work.

katiemumma20 · 25/02/2021 19:30

Well yes I know that but some people probably have a fairly good idea where they likely got it from. Especially if they were in close contact with someone who got it. For example a friend in October got it following a visit to her hairdresser who tested positive the day after her hair appointment so it’s an extremely strong chance that’s where she got it.

No-one can tell you where they got it since no-one can prove where theirs came from.

In terms of cases, changes in the 7-day rolling average is a much better indication of trends than daily case numbers, which will always fluctuate up and down. Look at the trends, not the data points. Our weekly average is still ~16% down on the previous 7 days.

katiemumma20 · 25/02/2021 19:31

@MrBullinaChinaShop so sorry to hear that :( hopefully with NHS staff being vaccinated transmission in hospitals will dramatically reduce.

katiemumma20 · 25/02/2021 19:32

Also if you’ve been nowhere else other than the supermarket then it’s likely that’s where you got it from etc. I don’t expect anyone to know with 100% certainty where they picked it up.

Kimye4eva · 25/02/2021 19:33

There’s been a 15% fall in cases for the last 7 days. And a 30% fall in the number of deaths.

katiemumma20 · 25/02/2021 19:34

Yes you are all right about looking at the trends and not comparing to yesterday! That is much more positive.

It's natural to be worried. I think I picked mine up from work as I work in a supermarket. Don't really go anywhere else and 3 others tested positive at work.
However it's possible my children caught it from school, had no symptoms and gave it to me. Highly unlikely though as cases have been tiny in their school.

tabernacles · 25/02/2021 19:41

Of course plenty of people will be able to be either fairly sure or certain where they got it, if they've only been one place in X days, or only seen one person.

For example, we hadn't been anywhere for a while, and my daughter went to see her father one weekend (they stay at his mum's house when they are together, as he doesn't have a house of his own), and a few days after my daughter returned, her grandma had a positive test. Then we all got ill (my daughter first).

Apparently her grandma got it from a friend.

ThriceAsNaice · 25/02/2021 19:46

From DC who got it in an outbreak at primary school. DC hadn't been anywhere else.

musicalfrog · 25/02/2021 19:55

People aren't catching it from staff in hospitals, but fellow patients. Staff are PPE'd up to the nines!

Doomsdayiscoming · 25/02/2021 19:57

Depends what you compare it against. They are lower now than early October, plus more tests are being done now, so you could argue mid-Sept.

They will continue to drop off until March 8th, and probably even a bit after, unless routine mass testing picks up more asymptomatic cases in children/staff, and/or the mixing causes a spike.

Then after that, we’ll see. But with vaccinations, those non-vaccinated but natural immunity from being infected, and the start of Spring weather allowing better air circulation for indoor spaces, I doubt it will go above 20k (even with much more testing) for a long time, perhaps ever.

Walkerbean16 · 25/02/2021 20:01

i caught it from my sister (at Christmas) she works in a pharmacy.

user1471462428 · 25/02/2021 20:02

My friend caught it going to a local convenience store. She was shielding but most of her online shop didn’t show up so she nipped to the shop. She was just unlucky and took a risk that didn’t pay off.

Doomsdayiscoming · 25/02/2021 20:03

Plus cases become slightly irrelevant. Sure it’s good to keep it as low as possible, but actually the number of people in hospital is the major issue.

In England the number of people in hospital has fallen 62% in 5 weeks. If this trend continues, there will be very few people in hospital in 2-3 months time.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 25/02/2021 20:10

I haven't had it but pretty much everyone I know who has had it caught it at work. My workplace had 19 cases in January. (Factory)

WhenSheWasBad · 25/02/2021 20:14

This lockdown is no where near as strict as the first. Still lots of (necessary) mingling and people going to work.

It is dropping but definitely looks like it’s slowing.

AlternativePerspective · 25/02/2021 20:14

The right place for this thread is the COVID topic.

itsgettingwierd · 25/02/2021 20:23

I've been wondering this too.

Seemed to have a good dramatic drop week in week but it seems to have slowed Joe and almost looks like it's halting.

I assume we must get to a point where outbreaks affect results where numbers in areas are generally quite low?

I do hope they continue to fall quite quickly because of all the people mass mixing at schools in a few weeks.

Not only because of in schools but the transport, increased footfall in local shops and those children and staff being close contacts of others who will be out and about for their work or shopping.

But I am finding the more I'm wanting and believing this could go right the more I then panic something will go wrong. This lockdown has messed with my head!

So why has it dropped as hard as the first? (If you compare to something measurable like hospitalisations). With, allegedly, a more contagious variant than the OG covid? Plus in the middle of winter compared to the middle of spring?
Leafdelta · 25/02/2021 20:25

No one can say where they contracted it - that's the whole point of the stay at home message! PPE will protect patient/HCW contact but not when they take it off in staff areas - same as teachers mixing after school or being lax once out of the classroom. Key workers car share, take transport, mix before/after work and think provision at work ends when their work-hours finish.

People keep saying that but it is just as strict as the first lockdown. The same workplaces that are open now were allowed to be open then, it's just that a lot of workplaces had to close temporarily in lockdown number one to get Covid secure.
ChazP · 25/02/2021 20:31

We got it from our son who was at school 2 days per week as we’re essential workers. He was at school on Monday and Wednesday at the end of Jan. On the Friday he was a bit lethargic and out of sorts but no temperature. On the Sunday we had an e-mail from the school saying he’d been in contact with someone who had tested positive. Monday I felt a bit under the weather. Tuesday, my partner woke up with a sky-high temperature. Ordered tests for both of us to be safe. Both positive.

Fair point waxon it is true that there are far more people out and about and at work now, compared with the first lockdown.
