Scottish announcement

Anyone else feeling deflated? It feels like England were given hope yesterday and we've not been given much. My area has basically been in lockdown (tier 3 or 4) since October. I do understand the need for caution and I suspect the English dates won't be met, but I'm scunnered tbh.

The SG are following data, not just giving out dates in the hope they are right.

Where have I heard that before?

"In implementing this plan we will be guided by data, not dates"

Scottishskifun · 24/02/2021 00:05

@mummapl and how would you feel to find out that the goal posts have moved in order for a baby group being open, seeing family outside your council area or being able to sit in a coffee shop?
Because that's what has happened in Scotland. In 8 weeks we go back to a tier system except rather than tier 1 being based on case level 20-75/100,000 its now less than 20/100,000 and doesn't factor in vaccinations within that tier allocation.

I'm not a Borris lover either but his reductions are based on hospital admissions, vaccination rate etc

MummaPI · 24/02/2021 00:14

@Scottishskifun I'm not saying NS is right either, just that I think Boris has got it wrong with giving dates especially when he said he wouldn't. For what its worth I think the 'England goalposts' will be moved regularly!

Scottishskifun · 24/02/2021 00:25

@MummaPI he put the caviat of at the earliest if the 4 levels met its the media who have taken the dates as definite.

In the words of a fellow poster when England is likely to be able to go to a zoo or theme park we will be able to meet another household outside (as long as its 4 people) in the rain for yet another walk......

It's the aim of something to aim for that the SG has fallen massively short on today which makes people aim for and work towards. Unfortunately most people (myself included) has gone what's the point! My area is very low in cases one of the lowest in mainland Scotland yet we will still go into tier 3 regardless in 8 weeks.

PeachesandCream2020 · 24/02/2021 00:35

Such a depressing announcement

My dd is in S2 and was so upset when I told her about schools today, I’m not bloody qualified to teach her at home, we both get stressed out with home learning. She is being taught maths online by a PE teacher and English by a French teacher..because her original teachers are in school teaching the seniors. And now another 8 weeks of this at least?! What a joke.

We have a vaccine now and it appears not to matter one bit, nothing has changed despite all elderly and vulnerable having received their first dose and having amazing results.

donewithitalltodayandxmas · 24/02/2021 00:40

Boris never promised he only gave earliest dates he at no point said defiantly will happen and made it clear that the gap between was to make sure it was ok to relax the next measure.
Everyone has jumped on the dates as people want hope

BourbonBiscuits20 · 24/02/2021 00:40

I feel so low today I honestly think I've cracked too. I had a baby at the start of the first lockdown and have a 2 year old who's not been in nursery even when they've been open as too young yet. Wanting to join a rebellion here. This is so disproportionate now.

PeachesandCream2020 · 24/02/2021 00:43

@BourbonBiscuits20 god that’s tough, I’m sorry. I’m up for joining that rebellion too.

donewithitalltodayandxmas · 24/02/2021 00:50

@MummaPI he gave earliest dates it can happen , not that it will and he was quite clear on that
Yes the papers have jumped in the dates as they always do but anyone watching and listening know what was said
I have booked a weekend in june in scotland , and a week in cornwall in sept. I am aware both may not happen but both places are money back if can't go due to covid , so what harm is there in having some hope.
Yes it might change , but fingers crossed it doesn't

Two things which did concern me with NS recently

She says about the virus being like measles, (which seems to also have been said by one of her medical advisors - Devi Sridhar?) Well it is different in quite important ways 1. Measles vaccine gives protection for life. 2. Not different strains of measles. Covid is different as vaccines do not protect as long, and will need yearly vaccines updates for different strains.

So therefore in some ways it is more similar to flu in the way it is approached / vaccinated against.

Secondly I think the focus on severe cases from the virus being used as a goalpost rather than simply the case numbers makes sense more. The precoccupation with elimination and zero covid with no apparent impact of the human costs of such measures seems misguided.

Thanks @PeachesandCream2020 ❤️

RubyWooRed · 24/02/2021 16:13

@emmathedilemma

Whilst I thought BoJo's was somewhat ambitious and optimistic today's announcement from Queen Nicola has left me absolutely speechless. Most local authorities in Scotland have case numbers well below those in England yet we are basically staying in lockdown for another 2 months. She's gone too far this time IMO.
Totally agree
RubyWooRed · 24/02/2021 16:20

Tier 3 is basically still lockdown.
And it’s not even going to be tier 3 for another two months
All of March and April still in full lockdown then back to a slightly less shit lockdown

I still can’t visit any family members as they are all outwith our Local Authority.

My elder family members have all been vaccinated
But we have still all to stay in our own houses and not travel.

Very deflated same as everyone else.

It’s the tier 3 thing that’s utterly fucking me off by the way.

Same.

Does anyone else think we'll suddenly have a lifting of restrictions / speeding up of the road map at the end of April though, to coincide with the election?

RubyWooRed · 25/02/2021 09:18

We better.
We cannot be put back into drudgery when hopefully by then millions more will have been vaccinated too.

It's crossed my mind. Have to say, she's lost my vote already off the back of Tuesday. But people have short memories.
OP posts:
Downton57 · 25/02/2021 12:44

She said that some areas might go straight to Tier 2 depending on numbers, if I remember rightly. I think things will improve in March and will be looking much more positive by the beginning of April. Older family members might have had their first dose of vaccine but very, very few people are fully protected yet so I think caution in March is necessary and sensible. A more upbeat tone would have been great on Tuesday but on the other hand I don't listen to Boris being upbeat and feel reassured. He has made optimistic forecasts too often and had to backtrack. Something in between would have been good!

raviolidreaming · 25/02/2021 17:02

Agreed!
